Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) said he plans to run for re-election in 2022, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reports.
“In fact, the senator’s staff said he filed his paperwork last year so that he could raise funds for his next campaign. Isakson won his third term to the U.S. Senate in 2016, about a year after he announced that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.”

Isakson holds a single-digit lead over first-time candidate Jim Barksdale, a wealthy investment manager whose opposition to trade deals and calls for a higher minimum wage has attracted backers of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, the unsuccessful Democratic presidential candidate.”

Voters unhappy with either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump and “casting a ballot for a third-party candidate could shake up Sen. Johnny Isakson’s (R-GA) battle for a third term. With polls showing Democrat Jim Barksdale in striking distance, both campaigns are quietly bracing for a possible Jan. 10 runoff,” the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) said that “he has been receiving treatment for Parkinson’s disease, but added that the illness will not prevent him from seeking re-election next year,” the New York Times reports.
“Disclosures about health problems are challenging for politicians, and Mr. Isakson said that he wrestled with whether to go public with his illness. However, he said that his family decided that transparency was the best route.”
Michelle Nunn (D) kept the door open for another campaign in an interview with the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
Said Nunn: “I feel we ran a good campaign. I feel proud of it. We had a great team – volunteers and staff. You spend the first few days being disappointed. Then you spend the next few days feeling a lot of gratitude for the experience. And then you start to get into the analysis of it. I think that will go on for some time.”
She added: “I will stay involved in service. That’s been the trajectory of my whole career. I’m certainly invested in continuing to build the kind of Georgia electorate that I think would be most healthy for our state – a two-party dialogue, one that engages more and more people. I’ll just leave open the possibility of electoral office.”
