Strategists Advise Bush to Tread Carefully with Trump

July 12, 2015 · 8:42 pm ET · 71 Comments

GOP strategists tell The Hill that Jeb Bush “needs to walk a fine line in responding to Donald Trump’s attacks, Republican strategists say, and avoid going toe-to-toe with the brash New Yorker.”

“They say getting into a ‘food fight’ with Trump would diminish Bush, the two-time Florida governor who is a leading contender for the Republican presidential nomination. But Bush also can’t sit back and let Trump’s barbs go unchallenged, Republican operatives say, so he will have to pick his battles as the 2016 races unfolds.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

July 10, 2015 · 1:10 pm ET · 71 Comments

“I’m confident Jeb and Hillary will elevate the discourse. I can’t speak for their surrogates. Except for this surrogate (pointing at himself). But I’m not a surrogate.”

— George W. Bush, quoted by KMBZ.

Two Very Different Campaign Models

July 10, 2015 · 10:05 am ET · 52 Comments

First Read: “Jeb’s model — with a whopping $103 million via his Super PAC and $11.4 million by his campaign (in just 16 days) — is one where you will have possibly two competing organizations (the campaign and the Super PAC), and where most of the resources (at least early on) will be housed in the Super PAC.”

“Meanwhile, Hillary’s model — $45 million raised by the campaign, $23 million by two Super PACs — is the structure we’ve seen from the last two successful presidential candidates, Barack Obama and George W. Bush. This model keeps most of the resources and almost all of the decision-making inside the campaign. What’s more, campaigns get discounted ad rates versus what outside groups and Super PACs get.”

Bush Says Obama Must Fire OPM Director

July 10, 2015 · 8:50 am ET · 82 Comments

Jeb Bush wants President Obama “to fire the head of the Office of Personnel Management amid a cascade of revelations about the size and scope of an enormous hack of federal employee data from the agency,” National Journal reports.

Said Bush: “You have a political hack — you have the national political director of the Obama reelection campaign as the head of this. And just as has been the case across the board when we have this sheer incompetence or scandalous behavior, there’s no accountability. No one ever seems—no one seems to be fired. If I was president of the United States, that person would be fired.”

Bush Holds Donor Retreat at Parent’s Home

July 10, 2015 · 7:00 am ET · 19 Comments

Washington Post: “The confab for some of the GOP’s wealthiest donors came just hours after Bush’s campaign and an allied super PAC announced that they’d donated more than $114 million to support the former governor — an unprecedented sum in American politics that gives him a sizable financial advantage over more than a dozen GOP rivals.”

“Bush had announced plans for the Kennebunkport donor retreat at the start of his campaign, dangling one of the most cherished chits in Republican politics — a visit to his family’s storied beachfront estate — as an incentive to entice benefactors to deliver.”

Democrats Work Overtime to Define Jeb Bush

July 9, 2015 · 9:05 pm ET · 29 Comments

Jeb Bush’s statement “that Americans should ‘work longer hours‘ thrust the Democratic attack machine into high gear for the first time this cycle, as operatives seized on the opportunity to paint the GOP’s leading 2016 contender with the same devastating brush they used on Mitt Romney four years ago,” Politico reports.

“Their objective isn’t just a few days of bad news coverage that might diminish his standing in the Republican primary field; it’s to establish a critique that will endure for the duration of the campaign.”

Bush Races Past Rivals in Fundraising

July 9, 2015 · 9:00 pm ET · 15 Comments

Jeb Bush and his allies announced on “that they had amassed more than $114 million in campaign cash over the last six months, dwarfing the combined fund-raising of his Republican rivals for the party’s presidential nomination,” the New York Times reports.

Wall Street Journal: “Only one-tenth of Mr. Bush’s haul went to his Miami-based campaign, with the rest going to the technically independent super PAC, which is based in California and is legally barred from coordinating its activities with his team.”

Bush Says Americans Need to Work Longer Hours

July 9, 2015 · 9:44 am ET · 185 Comments

Jeb Bush said that in order to grow the economy “people should work longer hours,” ABC News reports.

Said Bush: “My aspiration for the country and I believe we can achieve it, is 4 percent growth as far as the eye can see. Which means we have to be a lot more productive, workforce participation has to rise from its all-time modern lows. It means that people need to work longer hours and, through their productivity, gain more income for their families. That’s the only way we’re going to get out of this rut that we’re in.”

Rick Klein: “Bush’s comments read like a classic gaffe — a wealthy candidate with a famous name dispensing advice that ‘people need to work longer hours.’ But in their context and later clarification, it’s clear that Bush was making a very serious point about a very real issue: underemployment. That makes this episode an early test of Bush’s strength in the Republican field, as well as a challenge to his rivals who would consider pouncing on the moment.”

Jeb Bush’s Surge

July 9, 2015 · 7:02 am ET · 9 Comments

“Just two months after a flubbed question about the Iraq War seemed to imperil his presidential candidacy and a campaign shakeup hinted at disarray behind the scenes, Jeb Bush is back on top of the Republican field,” Politico reports.

“Bush has jumped from 10.8 percent on June 15, the day he announced, to 16.3 percent Wednesday in the Real Clear Politics polling average, almost 6 points ahead of his nearest rival, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. In New Hampshire, he’s taken a similar lead.”

Jeb Breaks with George on Promoting Democracy

July 6, 2015 · 11:39 am ET · 11 Comments

“Jeb Bush appears to be taking a different tack than his brother on the extent to which the United States should promote democracy around the world as part of its foreign policy efforts,” Politico reports.

Said Bush: “It has to be tempered with the realization that not every country is immediately going to become a little ‘d’ democratic country. Iraq would be a good example of that I think.”

Bush Tax Returns Show He’s Been Planning Run

July 6, 2015 · 7:34 am ET · 8 Comments

National Journal: “While Jeb Bush only announced eight months ago that he was ‘actively exploring’ a campaign for president, his tax returns suggest he’s been at least passively considering a White House run for the past eight years – and was willing to fork over possibly millions of dollars to preserve the option.”

“In the process, he has both neutralized the sort of criticism that helped tank Mitt Romney by paying the highest federal rate possible while simultaneously buying the credibility to argue for tax reform that’s born of shared experience with many millions of Americans who believe they’re paying the IRS too much.”

Mitt Romney and his wife, Ann, will travel to the Bush family compound in Kennebunkport, Me., early next week for a private lunch meeting with Jeb Bush, the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Romney is hosting two other presidential candidates — Gov Chris Christie of New Jersey and Senator Marco Rubio of Florida — at his summer home in Wolfeboro, N.H., this weekend.”

Trump Blames Jeb Bush for Roberts Appointment

July 2, 2015 · 9:00 pm ET · 39 Comments

Donald Trump told radio host Hugh Hewitt that Jeb Bush is responsible for influencing his brother’s appointment of Chief Justice John Roberts to the Supreme Court and with it, last week’s decision justifying Obamacare.

Said Trump: “If you think about it, Jeb Bush gave us Justice Roberts. He’s the one who pushed Justice Roberts.”

Two Ways to Handle Disclosures

July 1, 2015 · 9:32 am ET · 50 Comments

First Read: “We witnessed two very different disclosures on Tuesday. One candidate (Jeb Bush) controlled his disclosure regarding his taxes, and even had a story to tell about his business work and about how all Americans (including the wealthiest) should pay less in taxes. Another candidate (Hillary Clinton) let others control the rollout of her State Department emails. Of course, there doesn’t appear to be any disqualifying smoking gun in Hillary’s emails. But one person looked prepared; the other didn’t. One was proactive; one was reactive.”

Rick Klein: “For reporters spending a portion of Tuesday clicking through dueling document dumps, the contrast was unmistakable – and, of course, that just might have been intentional. Jeb Bush released 33 years of his own tax returns, along with his personal email address. A partial trove of Hillary Clinton’s old emails, meanwhile, were released as well – by the State Department, under court order, and under a cloud of questions about what’s not included.”

Bush Will Release 33 Years of Tax Returns

June 30, 2015 · 7:33 am ET · 16 Comments

Jeb Bush “is planning to release 33 years of tax returns Tuesday – the most ever by U.S. presidential candidate,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The decision to release more than three decades of financial information comes as Mr. Bush aims to demonstrate he is more transparent and accessible than his opponents, particularly Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton. She has filed the financial disclosure form required for presidential candidates but has not made her tax returns public.”

“If we don’t try to broaden out the map … we’re going to have to win with an inside straight, to use a Vegas term. Inside straight flush or whatever … I’m not a big gambler so I don’t know any gambling—does that sound stupid when you say that?”

Jeb Bush’s Business Dealings Raise Questions

June 29, 2015 · 6:15 am ET · 6 Comments

Washington Post: “Today, as he works toward his run at the White House, Bush touts his business experience as a strength that gives him the skills and savvy to serve as the nation’s chief executive. He has said he “worked my tail off” to succeed. As an announced candidate, Bush soon will be making financial disclosures that will reveal recent business successes and show a substantial increase in his wealth since he left office as Florida governor in 2007.”

“But records, lawsuits, interviews and newspaper accounts stretching back more than three decades present a picture of a man who, before he was elected Florida governor in 1998, often benefited from his family connections and repeatedly put himself in situations that raised questions about his judgment and exposed him to reputational risk.”
