Is Mark Halperin Plotting a Comeback?

June 27, 2018 at 8:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Disgraced journalist Mark Halperin has been spotted with a string of powerful media industry pals, insiders told Page Six — including CNN and PBS folks — sparking buzz that he’s the latest #MeToo-struck star to plot a comeback.”

“But sources close to the political pundit insist to us that they were all just social calls.”

What Happens to Mark Halperin’s Reporting?

January 2, 2018 at 7:42 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Swan: “Early this year, President Trump invited Mark Halperin to dinner in the White House residence. Seated around the table were Trump’s inner circle, including Jared Kushner, Hope Hicks, Reince Priebus, Stephen Miller, Kellyanne Conway, Steve Bannon, and Sean Spicer. They spent a rollicking evening reminiscing about the campaign, according to two sources in the room.”

“Trump concluded the dinner by telling his team: ‘You guys all need to talk to him,’ for his campaign book — the third installment of Game Change, the most valuable franchise in political reporting. The team cooperated.”

“But Halperin has since been thrown off the book project — Penguin backed out and HBO cancelled the movie version — after a number of women went public with stories about him sexually harassing them in the workplace. That leaves the treasure trove in the hands of Heilemann, and creates a complicated situation. While Halperin and Heilemann co-conducted nearly all of the Clinton campaign interviews and some Trump campaign interviews, it was Halperin’s access that unlocked the highest level of Trumpworld.”

Halperin’s Legacy Was Worse Than Sexual Harassment

November 22, 2017 at 12:42 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Eve Fairbanks: “Three weeks ago, numerous women stepped forward to accuse him of extraordinary acts of assault… But I’m not here to talk about that. I want to talk about the deeper, subtler, more insidious effect Mark Halperin had on our politics — one which we’ll be paying for for years to come.”

“The Note purported to reveal Washington’s secrets. In fact, its purpose was the exact opposite: to make the city, and US politics, appear impossible to understand. It replaced normal words with jargon. It coined the phrase ‘Gang of 500,’ the clubby network of lobbyists, aides, pols, and hangers-on who supposedly, like the Vatican’s cardinals, secretly ran DC. That wasn’t true — power is so diffuse. But Halperin claimed he knew so much more than we did, and we began to believe it.”

“Once you believe that, it’s not hard to be convinced that politics is only comprehensible, like nuclear science, to a select few. There were those chosen ones — the people who’d flattered Halperin to get a friendly mention in his newsletter, the ones he declared to be in the know — and the rest of us. Halperin wrote about Washington like it was an intriguing game, the kind that masked aristocrats played to entertain themselves at 19th-century parties: Everyone was both pawn and player, engaged in a set of arcane maneuvers to win an empty jackpot that ultimately meant nothing of true importance.”

That Scam Call Wasn't Random

Scammers don’t just guess your number. They buy personal information from data brokers—companies selling your phone number, home address, relatives’ info, and more online.

That’s how a random scam call can turn into phishing, impersonation, identity theft—or someone knowing more about you than they should.

That’s why I recommend Incogni. It removes your personal information from these databases and keeps removing it automatically.

Spotting the Harassers

October 27, 2017 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A well-known female media veteran emailed Mike Allen with pretty good advice in light of the revelations about Mark Halperin:

If you are anxiously looking around your media organization wondering who the harassers are or were, start with the men in power who are bullies: who screamed at subordinates, berated them, seemed to take pleasure in humiliating them — often publicly. We all know them. We have all worked with them. There is clearly a correlation between that behavior and this… I would love to send a message to the screamers that their behavior will no longer be tolerated.

Next Edition of ‘Game Change’ Canceled

October 27, 2017 at 7:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The 2016 edition of Game Change, the most lucrative franchise in political journalism, appears doomed as Penguin Press canceled the much-anticipated book and HBO dropped the movie version in response to five women accusing co-writer Mark Halperin of sexual harassment during his time at ABC News.”
