Trump’s Lead May Be Shrinking in Michigan

A new Monmouth poll in Michigan finds Donald Trump currently has the support of 36% of likely GOP primary voters, followed by Ted Cruz at 23%, John Kasich at 21% and Marco Rubio at 13%.

Key finding: “In interviews conducted Thursday and Friday, Trump held a solid lead with 39% support compared to 22% for Cruz, 17% for Kasich, and 14% for Rubio. The race was much tighter in Saturday and Sunday interviews at 32% for Trump, 26% for Kasich, 25% for Cruz, and 12% for Rubio.”

A new Fox 2 Detroit/Mitchell Research poll in Michigan finds Donald Trump leading the GOP presidential race with 42%, followed by  John Kasich at 20%, Ted Cruz at 19% and Marco Rubio at 9%.

Trump Holds Big Lead in Michigan

A NBC News/Marist poll in Michigan finds Donald Trump way ahead with 41%, followed by Ted Cruz at 22%, Marco Rubio at 17% and John Kasich at 13%.

A CBS News poll finds Trump leading with 39%, followed by Cruz at 24%, Rubio at 16% and Kasich at 15%.

Both polls are wildly different than one from American Research Group released yesterday.

Trump Loses His Lead in Michigan

A new American Research Group poll in Michigan shows John Kasich leading the GOP field with 33%, followed by Donald Trump at 31%, Ted Cruz at 15% and Marco Rubio at 11%.

Trump led Kasich by 18 points in their last survey conducted two weeks ago.

Group Seeks Evidence to Convict Snyder

“Hacking group Anonymous has set its sights on Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R), who is scrambling to address a drinking water crisis in Flint, Michigan,” The Hill reports.

“The goal of the campaign is to gather evidence against Snyder and put him in jail. The governor has been widely berated for his slow response to the emergency in Flint, where lead levels in the drinking water have spiked since officials switched the water source to a local river to cut costs.”

New Push to Split Michigan’s Electoral Votes

“A Republican presidential candidate hasn’t won Michigan since 1988, but with 2016 on the horizon, GOP lawmakers are proposing bills that could help a second-place finisher win some electoral college votes here,” MLive reports.

David Weigel: “Had this system been in place in 2012, Mitt Romney would have lost Michigan by nearly 450,000 of 4.7 million votes, but walked away with nine of the state’s 16 electoral votes.”

First Read: “As we said when states like Pennsylvania were considering similar changes in 2011, if you’re looking to change the rules of the game, you’re admitting your party can’t win under the current rules. “

Taegan Goddard is the founder of Political Wire, one of the earliest and most influential political web sites. He also runs Political Job Hunt, Electoral Vote Map and the Political Dictionary.

Goddard spent more than a decade as managing director and chief operating officer of a prominent investment firm in New York City. Previously, he was a policy adviser to a U.S. Senator and Governor.
