Georgia Governor Refers To ‘Colored People’ In Speech

November 3, 2016 · 8:58 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“A racially charged phrase used by Governor Nathan Deal during a speech to educators has the governor saying he made a mistake in what he said, but not in what he meant,” Fox 5 Atlanta reports.

Said Deal: “The irony of some of the groups who are opposing doing something to help these minority children is beyond my logic. If you want to advance the state of colored people, start with their children.”

He later clarified: “I did not mean to insult anyone, but I was upset.”

Georgia Governor Vetoes ‘Religious Liberty’ Bill

March 28, 2016 · 1:11 pm ET · 54 Comments

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal (R) vetoed the “religious liberty” bill that triggered a wave of criticism from gay rights groups and business leaders and presented him with one of the most consequential challenges he’s faced since his election to Georgia’s top office, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

Said Deal: “Our people work side by side without regard to the color of our skin, or the religion we adhere to. We are working to make life better for our families and our communities. That is the character of Georgia. I intend to do my part to keep it that way.”

Deal Backtracks on Confederate License Plates

June 23, 2015 · 5:27 pm ET · 18 Comments

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal (R) said he “wants a redesign of a state-sponsored license plate featuring the Confederate flag emblem, as a growing list of other Southern governors call for similar changes,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

“The Republican stopped short of calling for the tags to be phased out or eliminated entirely, as the leaders in North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee announced Tuesday. He said the redesign, though, would seek to eliminate the bigger visage of the flag that covers the background of the entire tag. The change, he added, wouldn’t require legislative action.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

“From a politician’s standpoint, there’s no group of editors or news directors that can prevent me from communicating directly with a mass audience. We talk about the media. The fact is my communications office in and of itself is a medium in its own right. Now that’s change. And we embrace it.”

— Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal (R), quoted by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Where Was Nathan Deal?

January 21, 2015 · 8:11 am ET · 32 Comments

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal (R) “skipped town over the weekend for an economic development trip. Just where he went is being treated like a state secret,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

“His office won’t disclose where the state’s top elected official journeyed or whom he visited. His public schedule is blank. His name was on the agenda for Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration but he wasn’t there.”
