“In a newly unearthed video from 2022, North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson (R) scoffs at the idea that young women should have access to birth control and, repeatedly waving his hand near his groin, says they just need to ‘get this under control,'” the HuffPost reports.

“During a January 2022 appearance at Hilltop Baptist Church in Thomasville, North Carolina, Robinson ― who is now the GOP nominee for governor ― also took aim at programs that provide sexual education and birth control to young women.”

GOP Candidate Regularly Questioned Claims by Women

June 18, 2024 · 5:00 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Mark Robinson, the firebrand Republican nominee for governor in North Carolina, has for years made comments downplaying and making light of sexual assault and domestic violence,” the Washington Post reports.

“A review of Robinson’s social media posts over the past decade shows that he frequently questioned the credibility of women who aired allegations of sexual assault against prominent men, including Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, actor Bill Cosby and now-U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh.”

“In one post, Robinson, North Carolina’s lieutenant governor, characterized Weinstein and others as ‘sacrificial lambs’ being ‘slaughtered.'”

North Carolina GOP Moves to Empower Secret Donors

June 13, 2024 · 10:01 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Mark Robinson has made inflammatory comments that could jeopardize his gubernatorial bid — and the GOP’s quest to gain complete statewide power in the swing state of North Carolina,” Politico reports.

“The lieutenant governor is also being crushed in fundraising by his Democratic opponent, Attorney General Josh Stein.”

“It is against this backdrop that Republicans on Tuesday approved a campaign finance proposal that changes how funds flow to state parties and the reporting requirements attached to that money. But Democrats are crying foul, saying the GOP rushed through surprise changes to state law that would allow donors to back Robinson without having to directly attach their names to his candidacy.”

North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson (R) “once insinuated the United States government was involved in both the attack on Pearl Harbor and the death of U.S. General George Patton as part of a conspiracy to help Joseph Stalin,” the Daily Mail reports.

“It’s one in a long series of conspiracy theories Robinson indulged before getting into politics. He has also been accused over the years of a number of anti-semitic, homophobic and sexist comments.”

North Carolina Governor’s Race Is a Toss Up

May 28, 2024 · 5:24 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Cook Political Report: “Our initial rating of this contest, now set between Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein and Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, was Lean Democrat, given the party’s recent track record of winning even as former President Donald Trump carried the state. Plus, Robinson’s lengthy history of controversial comments — from maligning women to attacking the LGBTQ+ community to making anti-Semitic remarks — initially made him look like a weaker candidate akin to Pennsylvania’s Doug Mastriano last cycle.”

“But unlike Mastriano, Robinson is raising actual money — more than $10.5 million so far.”

Mark Robinson Touts Corporal Punishment for Kids

North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson (R) said a loving approach to discipline misbehaving children is to “beat them in a circle,” WUNC reports.

Said Robinson: “We have perverted the word love. We don’t understand the word love. We don’t understand what love really is. We think love is sunshine and rainbows, and put your arms around somebody saying ‘I love you, brother’ — certainly that’s a form of love.”

He added: “But how many of y’all know when you hold your young’un by one arm and beat them in a circle, because they were bad — how many of you know that’s love too?”

Mark Robinson Didn’t Pay Taxes for Five Years

April 11, 2024 · 8:42 am ET · Leave a Comment

“North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson (R) has been open about some of his past financial challenges, including nonpayment of debts and failure to pay rents,” the ABC News reports.

“He’s also, throughout his political rise, railed against the social safety net and disparaged those who have relied on government assistance, while on his way to clinching the Republican gubernatorial nomination in the state.”

“And while Robinson has previously talked about his financial issues, bankruptcy records obtained by ABC News paint a more dire and detailed picture of his financial and business history than has previously been disclosed — including new details regarding how the potential future governor had failed to file his federal income taxes for five consecutive years starting in 1998.”

Offensive Comments by Mark Robinson Stand Out

March 2, 2024 · 11:45 am ET · Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Even in a Republican Party that, under former president Donald Trump’s leadership, has often rewarded crude insults, baseless claims and incendiary language, Robinson stands out among candidates this year for the volume of his bigoted attacks and vicious diatribes. The lieutenant governor of North Carolina and the first Black person to hold the office, Robinson is heavily favored to clinch the GOP nomination for governor in next Tuesday’s primary.”

“He is expected to advance to a November showdown against Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein, who has a much more measured tone — setting up a clash that echoes the choice between Trump and President Biden.”

North Carolina Republican Quoted Hitler in Unearthed Posts

North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson (R), a leading candidate for governor, “found his efforts to declare solidarity with Israel backfiring — by drawing renewed scrutiny to his long history of invoking antisemitic conspiracy theories and casting doubt on the Holocaust,” Jewish Insider reports.

“Robinson, while briefly serving as acting governor two weeks ago, sought to downplay his past social media comments at a press event held in the state legislature, where he acknowledged that ‘there have been some Facebook posts that were poorly worded on my part’ but stressed that ‘there is no antisemitism standing here in front of you.'”

“Newly uncovered social media comments, however, show that Robinson’s well-documented history of incendiary online activity is even more extensive than his remarks at the press conference suggested.”

“Top North Carolina Republicans opposed to Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson (R) are rallying around Bill Graham, an attorney and wealthy businessman expected to enter the 2024 gubernatorial race Wednesday,” The Dispatch reports.

“Republican insiders in North Carolina worry Robinson has too much baggage to win a high-profile contest in a battleground state that has seen Democrats occupy the governor’s mansion for most of the last three decades. Enter Graham, who plans to announce he will seed his campaign for the Republican nomination with $5 million in personal cash and begin advertising on statewide television October 26. Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, is barred from reelection because of term limits.”
