Cordray Will Step Down from Consumer Post

November 15, 2017 · 1:22 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Richard Cordray, the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, said that he would leave the agency this month,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Cordray, a Democrat and a holdover from the Obama administration, was appointed to a five-year term that was to end in July 2018. He was widely expected to step down before then to run for governor in Ohio, his home state.”

Jerry Springer Urged to Run for Governor

“Influential Ohio Democrats are pushing former Cincinnati mayor and daytime-TV host Jerry Springer to run for Ohio governor in 2018,” Business Insider reports.

“Many said Springer, who sought the Democratic nomination for governor of Ohio in 1982 and remains active in state politics, could be a good fit for the current political climate.”

Springer’s previous run resulted in an extraordinary ad where he admitted to paying a prostitute.

Cordray May Run for Ohio Governor

April 17, 2017 · 10:30 am ET · Leave a Comment

Politico: “Gary Cohn gave Richard Cordray, the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, an ultimatum over dinner a few weeks ago: Go the easy way, or go the hard way. Cohn, President Donald Trump’s top economic adviser, had heard the rumors that Cordray wanted to run for governor in Ohio. He left dinner that night thinking that they were true… So the White House decided to hold off on firing Cordray. Trump didn’t want to cause a sensation that could boost his candidacy and juice his fundraising.”

“Cordray — whose five-year term expires next July — has yet to announce his political intentions and his window for launching a gubernatorial campaign is starting to close. But whether or not Trump ultimately decides to fire him, he may already have enough political support to lead the field to replace Republican Gov. John Kasich in 2018.”

Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH), “whose national profile has risen in recent months, will not be a candidate for Ohio governor in 2018,” the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

“The eight-term congressman wrestled with a run for months, weighing the risk of jumping into a potentially crowded and unpredictable primary against sticking with a safe House seat.”
