Trump to Host Arab Leaders for Sensitive Talks

February 24, 2018 at 9:36 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump “has accelerated his diplomatic efforts to broker peace among quarreling Arab monarchies, starting with an upcoming series of White House visits by leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates,” Axios reports.

“Sources with knowledge of the negotiations tell us they hope these separate meetings — hugely consequential in their own right — will lead to a peace deal over Qatar in late spring at a summit in Washington or Camp David. That could help end the longstanding dispute over its alleged support for terrorism and ties to Iran.”

Mike Allen: “Unlikely to score a big domestic victory heading into the midterm elections and his own reelection, President Trump is trying a new angle in his effort to broker a meaningful peace deal in the Middle East.”

Kushner Tried and Failed to Get a Bailout from Qatar

July 10, 2017 at 12:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Intercept: “Not long before a major crisis ripped through the Middle East, pitting the United States and a bloc of Gulf countries against Qatar, Jared Kushner’s real estate company had unsuccessfully sought a critical half-billion dollar investment from one of the richest and most influential men in the tiny nation.”

“The revelation of the half-billion dollar deal raises thorny and unprecedented ethical questions. If the deal is not entirely dead, that means Jared Kushner is on the one hand pushing to use the power of American diplomacy to pummel a small nation while on the other his firm is hoping to extract an extraordinary amount of capital from there for a failing investment. If, however, the deal is entirely dead, the pummeling may be seen as intimidating to other investors on the end of a Kushner Companies pitch.”

Qatar Will Buy U.S. Warplanes Despite Trump Comments

June 14, 2017 at 3:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Qatar will sign a deal to buy up to 36 F-15 jets from the U.S. even as a political crisis in the Gulf leaves the Middle East nation isolated by its neighbors and criticized by President Trump for supporting terrorism,” Bloomberg reports.

“Qatar’s defense minister will meet with Pentagon chief Jim Mattis on Wednesday to seal the agreement.”
