Feingold Seeks Unusual Return to Senate

May 14, 2015 at 3:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 5 Comments

Smart Politics finds that Russ Feingold’s (D) official entrance into the 2016 U.S. Senate race puts him on an unusual pathway back to the nation’s upper legislative chamber.

“Over the last half-century only two U.S. Senators have returned to the chamber after losing their seat at the ballot box – Ohio Democrat Howard Metzenbaum in 1976 and Washington Republican Slade Gorton in 1988. No other Senator accomplished this feat since 1956.”

However, from “the beginning of direct elections in 1913 until the mid-1950s, such political comebacks were much more common with 14 defeated ex-U.S. Senators winning back a seat in the chamber including one who accomplished the feat twice: Kentucky Republican John Cooper in 1952 and 1956 (after losses in 1948 and 1954 respectively).”

Feingold Seeks Return to Senate

May 14, 2015 at 9:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 51 Comments

Former Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) announced that he will run to reclaim the U.S. Senate seat he lost five years ago to Ron Johnson (R), “fulfilling the hopes of Democrats who have been pushing for the liberal to return to the political arena,” the AP reports.

In the video announcement filmed inside his home near Madison, Feingold said his “desire to serve is stronger than ever” and that he wants to fight to “bring back to the U.S. Senate strong independence, bipartisanship and honesty.”

A new Public Policy Polling survey in Wisconsin shows Russ Feingold (D) with a clear lead over Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) in a hypothetical rematch of their 2010 contest, 50% to 41%.

Feingold Looks Likely to Run Again for Senate

February 23, 2015 at 8:50 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 16 Comments

“To most Democratic and Republican leaders in Wisconsin, it’s no longer a question of if Russ Feingold runs for Senate—it’s a question of when he’ll formally enter the race,” National Journal reports.

“If Feingold’s departure is imminent, that comes as no surprise in Wisconsin, where political insiders have believed for months that Feingold would return to take on GOP Sen. Ron Johnson next year in a repeat of their 2010 matchup.”

Is Feingold Preparing for a Senate Run?

February 20, 2015 at 6:30 am EST By Taegan Goddard 4 Comments

Russ Feingold (D) “will soon deliver his final speech as United States Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region of Africa, closing one chapter of his career and inevitably sparking speculation about the next,” the Huffington Post reports.

“Many have speculated the former Democratic senator will run for his old seat in 2016, taking on the man who beat him: Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI). Leaving the State Department would be the first logical step in exploring a campaign, as Feingold is heavily restricted from preparing to run for elected office while serving in his current post.”
