Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) signed two abortion bills into law Tuesday that ban most abortions in the state and criminalize providers who perform the procedure, ABC News reports.
Tweet of the Day
“I spent Juneteenth all day in the hot sun hoeing and pulling weeds and thinking about what it would have been like to have been a slave. At the end of the day, I thought about what it would be like to be an aborted baby. I got to see the sunrise and the sunset.”

Democrats Plan Post-Roe Campaign
“In every poll running in every targeted House district around the country, House Democrats’ campaign arm is testing how voters feel about the Supreme Court likely overturning Roe v. Wade,” Politico reports.
“The group’s strategists have drafted fundraising emails that will blast out to millions of supporters in the hours after the decision comes out. They’ve cut video clips of what GOP candidates say about abortion. They’re developing analytics models to find and target voters who back abortion rights.”
“Support for Roe is at an all-time high with voters, and the Democrats’ strategy is aimed at firing up a flagging Democratic base, while also trying to compete for some of the college-educated, female, suburban swing voters who backed them during the Trump era.”
What an Abortion Compromise Could Look Like
“When the two sides in the abortion debate squared off at the Supreme Court last fall, they agreed on one thing: There was no middle ground,” Politico reports.
“Now, any hope abortion rights supporters have of avoiding a historic loss before the court lies with Chief Justice John Roberts crafting an unlikely compromise. In the wake of Politico’s report last month on a draft majority opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade, Roberts would have to convince at least one of his five Republican-appointed colleagues to sign on to a compromise ruling that would preserve a federal constitutional right to abortion in some form while giving states even more power to restrict that right.”
Iowa Supreme Court No Longer Recognizes Abortion Rights
Iowa’s Supreme Court ruled Friday that abortion rights are not protected by the state constitution, a move that paves the way for lawmakers to ban future abortions in the state, the Des Moines Register reports.
20% of Pregnancies Terminated in 2020
“The number and rate of U.S. abortions increased from 2017 to 2020 after a long decline,“ the AP reports.
“The report from the Guttmacher Institute, a research group that supports abortion rights, counted more than 930,000 abortions in the U.S. in 2020. That’s up from about 862,000 abortions in 2017, when national abortion figures reached their lowest point since the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized the procedure nationwide.”
“About one in five pregnancies ended in abortion in 2020, according to the report.”
Biden Predicts ‘Mini-Revolution’ Over Abortion
President Biden told Jimmy Kimmel there will be a “mini revolution” with many politicians voted out of office if the Supreme Court overturns abortion rights.
Said Biden: “There’s a whole range of things that are at stake here when we talk about eliminating Roe v. Wade. It’s just ridiculous in my view.”
He added: “I don’t think the country will stand for it.”
How Democrats Can Win This Fall
Josh Marshall: “To make the 2022 elections a referendum on Roe, Democrats have to put protecting Roe and abortion rights on the table.”
“Here’s one way to do that: get clear public commitments from every Senate Democrat (and candidate for Senate) not only to vote for the Roe bill in January 2023 but also to change the filibuster rules to ensure that a majority vote would actually pass the bill and send it to the White House for the president’s signature.”
“At present, there are likely 48 Senate Democrats who can make that pledge.”
Florida’s Abortion Paradox
Florida, which recently passed steep restrictions on abortion, also has the nation’s third-highest abortion rate, Politico reports.
“This makes Florida an especially vivid laboratory to study the limits of the GOP’s push to restrict abortion. At what point does the Republican-dominated legislature in Tallahassee, unaccustomed recently to negative consequences at the polls, discover it has awakened a constituency that had come to rely on abortion as an important option in navigating their lives?”
Anti-Abortion Activists Collect Data for Prosecutions
MIT Technology Review: “Opponents of abortion are already using methods like license plate tracking, body cam recordings, and Wi-Fi networks designed to direct visitors to anti-abortion materials.”
“If states go on to criminalize abortion, that data could be used by anti-abortion activists to try to prosecute people seeking abortions, even if they visit a different state where it remains legal.”
GOP Lawmaker Blamed Abortion for Mass Shootings
Rep. Billy Long (R-MO) blamed abortion for gun violence in a radio interview.
Said Long: “When I was growing up in Springfield, you had one or two murders a year. Now we have two, three, four a week in Springfield, Missouri, so something has happened to our society and I go back to abortion.”
He added: “When we decided it was okay to murder kids in their mother’s wombs, life has no value to a lot of these folks.”
Big Majority Want No Restrictions on Abortion
A new Wall Street Journal-NORC poll finds that 68% of Americans want the Supreme Court to uphold Roe v. Wade, and 58% favor women having access to legal abortion for any reason — the highest it’s been since the question was first asked in 1977.
Meanwhile, a new Gallup poll finds that after a decade in which Americans’ identification as “pro-choice” varied narrowly between 45% and 50%, the percentage has jumped six points to 55% in the latest poll.
Blue Cities in Red States Won’t Enforce Abortion Bans
“Some local officials in liberal enclaves within red states say they won’t help enforce bans on abortion if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade,” Axios reports.
The Next Battle Over Abortion Is Over Pills
“The U.S. Supreme Court has not yet released its decision that looks set to dramatically scale back abortion rights, but one of the next legal battles has already begun in a Mississippi court,” Reuters reports.
“That is where the manufacturer of a pill used to carry out medication abortions, Las Vegas-based GenBioPro Inc, has filed a federal lawsuit challenging the conservative state’s restrictions on the pill, used in more than half of all U.S. abortions.”
40% Say Abortion Is a Top Issue for Them
A new Marquette Law School poll finds 40% of Americans rate abortion as one of the most important issues in the country — including 48% of Democrats and 31% of Republicans.
Asked what public policy on abortion should be, 29% say abortion should be legal in all cases, 38% say legal in most cases, 24% say it should be illegal in most cases, and 8% say illegal in all cases.
Oklahoma Bans Abortion from Fertilization
Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt (R) signed the strictest anti-abortion law in the nation, giving the country a preview of a possible post-Roe future, the Oklahoman reports.
The law prohibits most abortions beginning at fertilization, with no exceptions for rape or incest unless they were reported to law enforcement.
The law also encourages private citizens to sue anyone suspected of helping a person get an abortion.
Danger Sign for Democrats Running on Abortion Rights
In Texas’ 28th District, conservative Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) is running neck-and-neck with progressive challenger Jessica Cisneros (D) in one of the most scrutinized Democratic primaries of the night. As of shortly after midnight, Cuellar — one of the only Democrats in Congress who opposes abortion rights — led by fewer than 200 votes, Politico reports.
“The fact that the left couldn’t easily dislodge Cuellar following news about the likely overturning of Roe v. Wade in a state filled with Republicans eager to end abortion access could signal a problem for Democrats: Many are eager to run on abortion rights and fears about overturning Roe, but it’s unclear whether their own base is sufficiently motivated by this issue.”
Pelosi Responds After Being Denied Holy Communion
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) responded after San Francisco’s Catholic archbishop decided to deny her Communion over her support for abortion access in the United States, USA Today reports.
Said Pelosi: “I respect people’s views about that. But I don’t respect us foisting it onto others.”
She also added: “I wonder about the death penalty, which I am opposed to. So is the church, but they take no action against people who may not share their view.”
