Kenneth Starr, the independent counsel who delivered a report that served as the basis for President Bill Clinton’s impeachment in 1998, was demoted by Baylor University, where he had served as president and chancellor, after an investigation found “fundamental failure” by the university in its handling of accusations of sexual assault against football players, the New York Times reports.
Trump Will Target Clinton on Whitewater Next
“Donald Trump, who in recent days has accused Bill Clinton of rape and suggested he and Hillary Clinton may have had a role in the death of one of their close friends, plans to focus next on the Whitewater real estate scandal,” Politico reports.
Trump campaign adviser Michael Caputo emailed a researcher at the Republican National Committee asking him to “work up information on HRC/Whitewater as soon as possible. This is for immediate use and for the afternoon talking points process.”
Quote of the Day
“Very fishy.”
— Donald Trump, quoted by the Washington Post, describing the 1993 death of former Clinton White House aide Vincent Foster.
Trump Escalates Attacks on Bill Clinton
“Donald Trump is reviving some of the ugliest political chapters of the 1990s with escalating personal attacks on Bill Clinton’s character — centered on past accusations of sexual assault — amid a concerted effort to smother Hillary Clinton’s campaign message with the weight of decades of controversy,” the Washington Post reports.
“Trump’s latest shot came Monday when he released an incendiary Instagram video that includes the voices of two women who accused the former president of sexual assault, underscoring the presumptive Republican nominee’s willingness to go far beyond political norms in his critique of his likely Democratic rival.”
Bill Clinton Keeps a Low Profile
“Bill Clinton’s schedule many days is more packed than Hillary’s, though by design it rarely registers on the national radar,” the Washington Post reports.
“This is the invisi-Bill campaign. The former president who flickers occasionally on cable news channels remains a big draw on the off-Broadway circuit of presidential politics. It is a low-altitude tactical deployment that leaves a light footprint, aiming to maximize his value as a political asset without stirring the negatives that also trail him.”
“His new duties have not come without stumbles, and they conjure the implications of a Clinton restoration. Presidential spouses are expected to exert their influence over china patterns, not China policy. No one, however, is under the illusion that Bill Clinton would remain cloistered in the East Wing. Still open to question is whether voters will welcome his return or worry about it.”
Trump Raises Rape Allegations Against Bill Clinton
Donald Trump “escalated his attacks on former President Bill Clinton’s past in an interview on Wednesday with Sean Hannity on Fox News, bringing up an old allegation of rape,” the New York Times reports.
Said Trump: “For example, I looked at The New York Times. Are they going to interview Juanita Broaddrick? Are they going to interview Paula Jones? Are they going to interview Kathleen Willey?”
He continued: “In one case, it’s about exposure. In another case, it’s about groping and fondling and touching against a woman’s will. And rape.”
Clinton Charity Aided Clinton Friends
“The Clinton Global Initiative, which arranges donations to help solve the world’s problems, arranged a financial commitment that benefited a for-profit company part-owned by people with ties to the Clintons, including a current and a former Democratic official and a close friend of former President Bill Clinton,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“Mr. Clinton talked up the company in public and endorsed it with then-Energy Secretary Steven Chu when the company was in line for a federal grant, which it later won.”
Trump Says Clinton Was ‘Enabler’ of Husband’s Affairs
Donald Trump accused Hillary Clinton of being “an unbelievably nasty, mean enabler” of her husband’s alleged affairs, CNN reports.
Said Trump: “She’s been the total enabler. She would go after these women and destroy their lives. She was an unbelievably nasty, mean enabler, and what she did to a lot of those women is disgraceful.”
Little Evidence Clinton Broke Rules on Email
“Prosecutors and FBI agents investigating Hillary Clinton’s use of a personal email server have so far found scant evidence that the leading Democratic presidential candidate intended to break classification rules, though they are still probing the case aggressively with an eye on interviewing Clinton herself,” the Washington Post reports.
Bill Had Much Tougher Odds Than Hillary
Joe Klein: “He had larger problems than an email server: he had recently been found out as a Vietnam draft dodger and a womanizer. People called him Slick Willie. Within weeks, he would be in a deeper, darker hole than Hillary has experienced this year–he would be running third, behind George H.W. Bush and the independent Ross Perot. By June, only 13% of the public thought him trustworthy. He was toast.”
“This is old news, but it’s living history for the Clintons. It is what keeps Hillary buoyant, even as the most glamorous Democratic constituencies–celebrities, idealistic college kids–have flocked to Bernie Sanders. More than any other politicians I’ve covered, the Clintons have a perfect sense of chronology. They know that politics moves more slowly than the daily media frenzy, that new story lines–comebacks, especially–are catnip to cable networks. They know that polls can change, that Trump will have his day, that the general election will be Armageddon. But they are confident she’ll win.”
Koch Admits Clinton Could Be Better than Republicans
Billionaire GOP donor Charles Koch told ABC News that “it’s possible” Hillary Clinton could make a better president than the remaining candidates in the Republican presidential primary.
Koch also said that he believed Bill Clinton was a better president “in some ways” than George W. Bush.
Said Koch: “In other ways, I mean Clinton wasn’t an exemplar. But as far as the growth of government, the increase in spending. It was 2.5 times [more] under Bush than it was under Clinton.”
New Clinton Documents Shed Light on Trump Ties
“The release Tuesday by the National Archives of a fresh trove of documents detailing the Clinton administration’s dealings with billionaire Donald Trump could become the latest fuel for flame-throwing in an already incendiary 2016 presidential race,” Fox News reports.
The documents include: a signed copy of Trump’s The Art of the Deal, delivered to a top aide to then-President Clinton; logs of Trump’s invitations to the Clinton White House; and an entry about a Trump Towers photo-op with the president.
Clinton Highly Unlikely to be Indicted
“It’s the most explosive question of the 2016 presidential campaign: Could Hillary Clinton get indicted for her handling of sensitive materials through her home email server?”
“A Politico review of dozens of recent federal investigations for mishandling of classified records suggests that it’s highly unlikely — but not impossible. The examination, which included cases spanning the past two decades, found some with parallels to Clinton’s use of a private server for her emails, but — in nearly all instances that were prosecuted —aggravating circumstances that don’t appear to be present in Clinton’s case.”
FBI Not Rushing Clinton Email Probe
FBI director James Comey told the Niagra Gazette that “there was no pressure to wrap-up the probe” into Hillary Clinton’s private email server before the Democratic National Convention in July.
Clinton Email Probe Enters New Phase
“Federal prosecutors investigating the possible mishandling of classified materials on Hillary Clinton’s private email server have begun the process of setting up formal interviews with some of her longtime and closest aides, according to two people familiar with the probe, an indication that the inquiry is moving into its final phases,” the Los Angeles Times reports.
“Those interviews and the final review of the case, however, could still take many weeks, all but guaranteeing that the investigation will continue to dog Clinton’s presidential campaign through most, if not all, of the remaining presidential primaries.”
Meanwhile, the Washington Post details how Clinton’s aides pushed to accommodate Clinton’s wishes to use her own private email account: “From the earliest days, Clinton aides and senior officials focused intently on accommodating the secretary’s desire to use her private email account, documents and interviews show. Throughout, they paid insufficient attention to laws and regulations governing the handling of classified material and the preservation of government records.”
Clinton Staffer Granted Immunity in Email Probe
“The Justice Department has granted immunity to a former State Department staffer, who worked on Hillary Clinton’s private email server, as part of a criminal investigation into the possible mishandling of classified information,” the Washington Post reports.
“The official said the FBI had secured the cooperation of Bryan Pagliano, who worked on Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign before setting up the server in her New York home in 2009.”
New York Times: “A federal law enforcement official said that barring any unforeseen changes, the F.B.I. investigation could conclude by early May. Then the Justice Department will decide whether to file criminal charges and, if so, against whom.”
Judge Orders Discovery to Go Forward on Clinton Email
“A federal judge on Tuesday ruled that State Department officials and top aides to Hillary Clinton should be questioned under oath about whether they intentionally thwarted federal open records laws by using or allowing the use of a private email server throughout Clinton’s tenure as secretary of state from 2009 to 2013,” the Washington Post reports.
“A State Department official said that the department is aware of the order and that it is reviewing it but declined to comment further, citing the ongoing litigation. Discovery orders are not readily appealable.”
Quote of the Day
“Sometimes when I am on a stage like this, I wish that we weren’t married, then I could say what I really think.”
— Bill Clinton, quoted by NBC News, quickly adding, “I don’t mean that in a negative way. I am happy.”
