Clinton Foundation Snubbed Because of Scandals

September 26, 2015 · 10:25 am ET · 16 Comments

“The Clinton Foundation invited everyone from Pope Francis and Leonardo DiCaprio to Bill de Blasio and Janet Yellen to its showcase gathering starting Saturday in New York City, according to multiple sources familiar with the planning,” Politico reports.

“But those invitations were among the dozens turned down by all manner of celebrities, dignitaries and donors, according to the sources, who said the controversies swirling around the foundation and Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign have made some bold-faced names and donors wary of the foundation.”

Clinton May Not Have Turned Over All Her Emails

September 25, 2015 · 4:39 pm ET · 135 Comments

“Obama administration officials made new revelations about Hillary Clinton’s emails on Friday, as the ongoing controversy continues to spin against the Democratic presidential front-runner,” The Hill reports.

“In one announcement, a senior State Department official said that the department was handing over ‘a small number’ of new emails related to the 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, to a House committee investigating the incident.”

Separately, the AP reports that the administration “had discovered a new chain of emails that Clinton had declined to turn over, despite her claims to have provided the government with all work-related messages.”

FBI Recovers Clinton’s Deleted Email

September 23, 2015 · 9:15 am ET · 72 Comments

“The FBI has recovered personal and work-related e-mails from the private computer server used by Hillary Clinton during her time as secretary of state,” Bloomberg reports.

“The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s success at salvaging personal e-mails that Clinton said had been deleted raises the possibility that the Democratic presidential candidate’s correspondence eventually could become public. The disclosure of such e-mails would likely fan the controversy over Clinton’s use of a private e-mail system for official business.”

First Read: “This entire story has continued to drip-drip for her, and Clinton’s next best chance to try to completely put it behind her is next month during her testimony before the House Benghazi committee.”

Most Think Clinton Broke Rules with Private Email

September 14, 2015 · 9:51 am ET · 63 Comments

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds 55% of Americans say they disapprove of the way Hillary Clinton has handled questions about her use of a private e-mail account while serving as secretary of state. An almost identical percentage — 54% — say that she has tried to cover up facts.

Asked whether Clinton stayed within government guidelines or broke the rules by using a private server, 51% say she broke the rules, while 32% say she did not, with the remainder offering no opinion.

Clinton’s Deleted Emails May Be Recoverable

September 13, 2015 · 9:01 am ET · 48 Comments

“The company that managed Hillary Clinton’s private e-mail server said it has “no knowledge of the server being wiped,” the strongest indication to date that tens of thousands of e-mails that Clinton has said were deleted could be recovered,” the Washington Post reports.

“Clinton and her advisers have said for months that she deleted her personal correspondence from her time as secretary of state, creating the impression that 31,000 e-mails were gone forever… But experts say, depending on the condition of the server, underlying data can remain on the device, and the e-mails can often be restored.”

Clinton Finally Apologizes for Using Private Email

September 8, 2015 · 9:41 pm ET · 66 Comments

Hillary Clinton, finally, apologized for her decision to rely on a private e-mail server during her time as Secretary of State, the Washington Post reports.

“That’s a different response than Clinton gave Monday to the Associated Press on the same question.  And a different one than she gave to NBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Friday.  That it took Clinton so long to realize that a full apology — without the caveats of ‘that this has been confusing to people’ etc. — was an absolutely necessary first step to putting the story behind her suggests one of two things is going on: a) Clinton is getting bad advice from her campaign team or b) Clinton is resistant to good advice from her campaign team.”

Clinton Paid Government Staffer to Maintain Email Server

September 5, 2015 · 7:37 am ET · 12 Comments

Hillary Clinton and her family “personally paid a State Department staffer to maintain the private e-mail server she used while heading the agency,” the Washington Post reports.

“The unusual arrangement helped Clinton retain personal control over the system that she used for her public and private duties and that has emerged as an issue for her campaign. But, according to the campaign official, it also ensured that taxpayer dollars were not spent on a private server that was shared by Clinton, her husband and their daughter as well as aides to the former president.”

Ex-Clinton Staffer Will Plead the Fifth on Email Server

September 3, 2015 · 8:48 am ET · 52 Comments

A former Hillary Clinton staffer who helped set up the former secretary of state’s private email server has vowed to invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions after a congressional committee subpoenaed him, NBC News reports.

First Read says the news “is yet another reminder how this email story is out of her control. After all, what’s in the best interests of the campaign (Team Clinton released a statement that they wanted the former aide, Bryan Pagliano, to testify) isn’t necessarily in the best interests of everyone involved (Pagliano’s lawyer certainly thought otherwise). And when that dynamic is at play, things are no longer in your hands.”

Clinton Sent at Least 6 Emails Now Deemed Classified

September 2, 2015 · 8:51 am ET · 94 Comments

While she was secretary of state, Hillary Clinton “wrote and sent at least six e-mails using her private server that contained what government officials now say is classified information,” the Washington Post reports.

“Although government officials deemed the e-mails classified after Clinton left office, they could complicate her efforts to move beyond the political fallout from the controversy. They suggest that her role in distributing sensitive material via her private e-mail system went beyond receiving notes written by others, and appears to contradict earlier public statements in which she denied sending or receiving e-mails containing classified information.”

Blumenthal Remained Key Adviser to Clinton

September 1, 2015 · 5:10 pm ET · 27 Comments

“When Hillary Clinton arrived at the State Department in 2009, she wanted to bring along Sidney Blumenthal, a former Clinton White House aide and one of her closest advisers. His job didn’t materialize, blocked by the Obama White House, but Mr. Blumenthal seems to have come along anyway,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“New records from Mrs. Clinton’s time as secretary of state show that Mr. Blumenthal, 66 years old, sought an outsize role in advising her, especially for someone with no formal job at the department. He served as political wise man, occasional gate keeper and one-man intelligence service—feeding Mrs. Clinton a steady diet of political advice, foreign-intelligence information, capital gossip and electoral insight in quick email blasts, long memorandums and late-night phone calls.”

Massive Batch of Clinton Emails to be Released

August 31, 2015 · 7:01 am ET · 10 Comments

“The roiling controversy over Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server as secretary of state looks likely to intensify Monday with the State Department set to release the largest batch of her messages made public thus far,” Politico reports.

“The sheer size of the planned posting on the State Department’s website—at least 6,106 pages, according to a recent court filing—should give Clinton’s critics and her defenders a lot to digest.”

Quote of the Day

“The email thing, it has kind of a mystique to it. You know, an email is just an utterance in digital form. But it has some kind of dark energy that gets everybody excited… it’s almost like a vampire. She’s going to have to find a stake and put it right through the heart of these emails in some way.”

— California Gov. Jerry Brown (D), speaking to NBC News about Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while serving as Secretary of State.

The New York Times profiles David Kendall, who for 20 years “has been on the front lines for Bill and Hillary Clinton as their personal lawyer, battling investigators and litigants in the superheated environment where law and politics meet.”

“From Whitewater to impeachment, he has waged legal warfare to keep the Clintons’ political careers on track. So as Mrs. Clinton faces questions about her use of a personal email server as secretary of state, no one is surprised she turned to Mr. Kendall. The latest furor has put Mr. Kendall under a spotlight in a way that discomfits the tight-lipped and camera-shy lawyer.”

Clinton Plays Dumb on Email Server

August 19, 2015 · 6:48 am ET · 71 Comments

Hillary Clinton “said repeatedly Tuesday that she did not know if her e-mail server, which was turned over to the FBI last week, had been wiped clean of data,” the Washington Post reports.

In a testy exchange with reporters following, Clinton responded, “What, like with a cloth or something?” when asked if the server had been wiped. She added: “I don’t know how it works at all.”

Politico reports “some longtime allies are increasingly worried that she’s learned little from past scandals, and is falling back on her tendency to mount a legalistic defense that only encourages perceptions that she has something to hide.”

Clinton Will Turn Over Private Email Server

August 11, 2015 · 10:11 pm ET · 80 Comments

“Hillary Clinton is turning over to federal authorities the private computer server she used to handle her emails when she served as secretary of state, an unexpected move and an attempt to quash ongoing concerns that her unorthodox approach included insufficient safeguards to protect government secrets,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“A spokesman for Mrs. Clinton’s presidential campaign said Tuesday that she had directed her team to give to the Justice Department both the computer server — which had been kept at her home in Chappaqua, N.Y. — and a thumb drive containing copies of her emails.”
