Clinton Swears She Handed Over All Email

August 10, 2015 · 6:26 pm ET · 15 Comments

Hillary Clinton, “facing questions over her use of a private e-mail system while secretary of state, signed a statement over the weekend declaring ‘under penalty of perjury’ that she has turned over to the government all of the e-mails that were federal records,” the Washington Post reports.

FBI Investigating Security of Clinton Email Server

August 5, 2015 · 12:07 am ET · 84 Comments

Washington Post: “The FBI has begun looking into the security of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s private e-mail setup, contacting in the past week a Denver-based technology firm that helped manage the unusual system, according to two government officials.”

“Also last week, the FBI contacted Clinton’s lawyer, David Kendall, with questions about the security of a thumb drive in his possession that contains copies of work e-mails Clinton sent during her time as secretary of state.”

Next Batch of Clinton Emails to be Released

July 31, 2015 · 6:31 am ET · 4 Comments

“The State Department is set Friday to post online its next batch of e-mails that Hillary Clinton sent and received on a personal account while she was secretary of state,” Bloomberg reports.

“None is anticipated to contain material directly tied to the Sept. 11, 2012, attacks in Benghazi, Libya. Instead, these e-mails are anticipated to date from an earlier period in Clinton’s tenure as secretary—late 2009 to early 2010. Even so, they will likely draw intense scrutiny from the media, Republicans and others seeking any new political ammunition or gossipy tidbits about the 2016 Democratic presidential front-runner.”

Deal Highlights Complicated Clinton Ties

July 30, 2015 · 6:53 am ET · 15 Comments

The Wall Street Journal reports on “an unusual intervention” by Hillary Clinton while Secretary of State on behalf of UBS which was being used by the IRS to get the identities of Americans with secret bank accounts.

“From that point on, UBS’s engagement with the Clinton family’s charitable organization increased… from less than $60,000 through 2008 to a cumulative total of about $600,000 by the end of 2014… And it paid former president Bill Clinton $1.5 million to participate in a series of question-and-answer sessions… making UBS his biggest single corporate source of speech income disclosed since he left the White House.”

“There is no evidence of any link between Mrs. Clinton’s involvement in the case and the bank’s donations to the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation, or its hiring of Mr. Clinton. But her involvement with UBS is a prime example of how the Clintons’ private and political activities overlap.”

Why Is There a Two-Month Gap in Clinton’s Emails?

July 28, 2015 · 9:33 pm ET · 45 Comments

Daily Beast: “Among the approximately 2,000 emails that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has released from her private account, there is a conspicuous two-month gap. There are no emails between Clinton and her State Department staff during May and June 2012, a period of escalating violence in Libya leading up to the September 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi that left four Americans dead.”

“That two-month period also coincides with a senior Clinton aide obtaining a special exemption that allowed her to work both as a staff member to the secretary and in a private capacity for Clinton and her husband’s foundation. The Associated Press has sued to obtain emails from Clinton’s account about the aide, Huma Abedin.”

Clinton Used Private Email for Classified Information

July 24, 2015 · 12:41 pm ET · 135 Comments

“An internal government review found that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sent at least four emails from her personal account containing classified information during her time heading the State Department,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

In a letter to members of Congress, the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community “concluded that Mrs. Clinton’s email contains material from the intelligence community that should have been considered ‘secret’ at the time it was sent, the second-highest level of classification.”

Criminal Investigation Sought Over Clinton Email

July 24, 2015 · 7:10 am ET · 40 Comments

“Two inspectors general have asked the Justice Department to open a criminal investigation into whether sensitive government information was mishandled in connection with the personal email account Hillary Clinton used as secretary of state,” the New York Times reports.

“The Justice Department has not decided if it will open an investigation… At issue are thousands of pages of State Department emails from Mrs. Clinton’s private account. Mrs. Clinton has said she used the account because it was more convenient, but it also shielded her correspondence from congressional and Freedom of Information Act requests.”

Politico notes the newspaper made “small but significant changes” to the story last night after being pressed by the Clinton campaign.

Obama Aides Knew of Clinton’s Private Email

July 1, 2015 · 6:42 am ET · 21 Comments

President Obama’s top aides, including David Axelrod, “communicated with Hillary Clinton at her private email address while she was secretary of state, new records show,” according to CNN.

“White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel had also asked for Clinton’s email address, and Clinton instructed her staff to give it to him.”

“Her use of private email was out of step with the State Department’s rules against employees regularly using personal email for work purposes. Obama officials — including Axelrod — had said they were unaware Clinton was using a personal email address. He told MSNBC this month that he would have asked questions about it if he’d been aware of her email habits.”

Blumenthal Role Wider Than Previously Thought

July 1, 2015 · 5:53 am ET · 13 Comments

“In her early months in office, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in contact with unofficial adviser Sidney Blumenthal more often and on a wider range of topics than was previously known, a set of about 3,000 Clinton emails released Tuesday night by the State Department revealed,” Politico reports.

Chelsea Clinton Got $65K for Speech

June 30, 2015 · 7:23 am ET · 27 Comments

The Washington Post reports Chelsea Clinton was paid $65,000 for a speech at the University of Missouri after officials balked at her month’s $275,000 fee.

“More than 500 pages of e-mails, contracts and other internal documents obtained by The Washington Post from the university under Missouri public record laws detail the school’s long courtship of the Clintons. They also show the meticulous efforts by Chelsea Clinton’s image-makers to exert tight control over the visit, ranging from close editing of marketing materials and the introductory remarks of a high school student to limits on the amount of time she spent on campus.”

Clinton Didn’t Turn Over All Emails

June 25, 2015 · 9:18 pm ET · 54 Comments

The State Department said Hillary Clinton “didn’t hand over at least 15 emails that appear to be work-related from her personal server, contradicting her claims that all her work emails were in the hands of the federal government,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The emails in question were uncovered as part of a subpoena from a congressional committee to Sidney Blumenthal, a longtime Clinton confidant and former White House aide in Bill Clinton’s administration. At least 15 emails given by Mr. Blumenthal to the committee don’t match any in the archive of more than 30,000 emails turned over by Mrs. Clinton to the State Department late last year.”

New Emails Shed Light on Blumenthal Role

June 23, 2015 · 5:38 am ET · 10 Comments

Wall Street Journal: “A new batch of emails released by a congressional committee Monday offers a rare window into the unique and complicated role that Sidney Blumenthal has played in the life of Mrs. Clinton, now the frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination.”

“He is part of a far-flung coterie of confidantes who appear and reappear in the Clintons’ lives. Loyal to former aides, the Clintons seldom jettison those who enter the inner circle and often find new ways to put them to work.”

Sidney Blumenthal Emails Raise New Questions

June 16, 2015 · 6:18 am ET · 13 Comments

“Emails that a longtime confidant to Hillary Clinton recently handed over to the House committee investigating the 2012 attacks in Benghazi, Libya, raise new questions about whether the State Department and Mrs. Clinton have complied with a series of requests from the panel,” the New York Times reports.

“It is not clear whether the State Department possesses the emails between Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Blumenthal and did not hand them over. It is also possible that Mrs. Clinton never provided them to the department and deleted them off the server that housed the personal account she used exclusively when she was secretary of state.”

Blumenthal Gets Benghazi Grilling

June 15, 2015 · 6:32 am ET · 3 Comments

“House GOP Benghazi investigators will face off with a combative confidant of Hillary Clinton this week in a closed-door interrogation session — one of the biggest moments for a Benghazi probe that continues to dog the Democratic presidential front-runner,” Politico reports.

“The House Select Committee on Benghazi on Tuesday will depose Sidney Blumenthal — a longtime Clinton family friend — about why he emailed the former secretary of state unsubstantiated intelligence on Libya, whether he was paid for the work and whether he used his Clinton connections to help his business partners.”

Swedish Lottery Supported Clinton Foundation

June 3, 2015 · 9:54 am ET · 27 Comments

“Bill Clinton’s foundation set up a fundraising arm in Sweden that collected $26 million in donations at the same time that country was lobbying Hillary Clinton’s State Department to forgo sanctions that threatened its thriving business with Iran,” the Washington Times reports.

“The Swedish entity, called the William J. Clinton Foundation Insamlingsstiftelse, was never disclosed to or cleared by State Department ethics officials, even though one of its largest sources of donations was a Swedish government-sanctioned lottery.”

First Read: “It’s another Foundation story that doesn’t quite reveal a smoking gun, but – again – there’s just a whiff of shadiness and something that feels weird about the whole deal.”

Iowa Voters Don’t See Issue with Former Presidents

June 3, 2015 · 5:52 am ET · 5 Comments

A new Bloomberg/Des Moines Register Iowa Poll finds 57% of likely Republican caucus-goers said that it would be “mostly good” for Jeb Bush’s presidency if he were to tap his older brother, George, as a close adviser. Thirty-three percent said such an arrangement would be “mostly bad” for Jeb Bush’s presidency.

As for Hillary Clinton, a whopping 83% of likely Democratic caucus-goers approved of the idea of her using her husband, Bill, as a close adviser, while just 9% said doing so was a “mostly bad” suggestion for her presidency.
