Democrats Enter Shutdown Without New Leverage

October 1, 2025 at 8:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

September 30, 2025 at 1:50 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A Few More Thoughts on Government Shutdowns

September 29, 2025 at 1:06 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

It’s understandable that Democrats want to fight Donald Trump — and a shutdown confrontation is one of the few chances they have. With Senate rules requiring Democratic votes to keep the government open, the temptation is obvious.

Democrats Risk Owning the Shutdown

September 29, 2025 at 9:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Democrats are betting that President Trump’s clumsy handling of the budget standoff will leave him and Republicans shouldering the blame for an imminent government shutdown.

It’s not a bad wager considering how bad Trump is at governing, but it’s also unlikely to pay off.

Brendan Carr Is Suddenly Silent

September 26, 2025 at 2:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

There may be no clearer sign that the Trump administration misjudged the blowback from forcing Jimmy Kimmel off the air than the sudden silence of FCC Chairman Brendan Carr.

Just days ago, Carr was strutting in front of cameras, boasting of his threat to ABC — “We can do this the easy way or the hard way” — and mocking Kimmel while praising the television stations that preempted his show.
