J.D. Vance and the TheoBros

September 23, 2024 · 4:02 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Mother Jones: “In their place, a group of young pastors hope to spearhead a Christian nationalist glow-up as they eagerly await a ‘Christian prince’ to rule America. These often bearded thirty- and fortysomethings have suits that actually fit. They are extremely online, constantly posting on myriad platforms, broadcasting their YouTube shows from mancaves, and convening an endless stream of conferences for likeminded followers. Let’s call them, as one scholar I spoke with did, the TheoBros.”

“For all their youthful modishness, this group is actually more conservative than their older counterparts. Many TheoBros, for example, don’t think women belong in the pulpit or the voting booth—and even want to repeal the 19th Amendment. For some, prison reform would involve replacing incarceration with public flogging. Unlike more mainstream Christian nationalists, like House Speaker Mike Johnson, who are obsessed with the US Constitution, many TheoBros believe that the Constitution is dead and that we should be governed by the Ten Commandments.”

Trump and Harris Go Light on Religion

September 23, 2024 · 7:44 am ET · Leave a Comment

“The race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump is the first presidential election in half a century in which neither candidate is openly telling voters much about their religion or faith,” Axios reports.

“The lack of emphasis on religion comes as the percentage of Americans identifying as ‘religiously unaffiliated’ has skyrocketed to 27% — a larger share of the population than mainline Protestants and evangelical white voters combined.”

Trump’s Lie Is Another Test for Christian America

September 14, 2024 · 11:53 am ET · Leave a Comment

Russell Moore: “The accusation that Haitian immigrants in a small Ohio city are abducting and eating their neighbors’ cats and dogs relies not on one falsehood but on a web of them. The rhetoric evokes racist tropes about ‘savages’ who do not conform to our civilized Western world. There’s also a religious angle: the idea that Haitian refugees are voodoo occultists who might be worshipping the devil.”

“As an evangelical Christian who actually believes in the existence of Satan, I agree that we can indeed see the work of the devil at play here, only it’s not on the menu of the Haitian families but rather in the cruelty of those willing to lie about them.”

Pope Says U.S. Election Is Choice Between ‘Two Evils’

September 13, 2024 · 2:14 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Pope Francis on Friday described the choice US voters must make in the presidential election as one between the “lesser of two evils,” deeming former President Donald Trump’s anti-migrant policies and Vice President Kamala Harris’ support of abortion rights as both being ‘against life,'” CNN reports.

Said Francis: “One must choose the lesser of two evils. Who is the lesser of two evils? That lady or that gentleman? I don’t know. Everyone with a conscience should think on this and do it.”

A Big Jump in ‘Religiously Unaffiliated’

Axios: “Every age group has seen declines in religious affiliation during the past decade, but the largest jumps are among Americans ages 30 to 49 — older millennials and younger Gen Xers, the data from the nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute show.”

“From 2013 to 2023, the percentage of religiously unaffiliated among that age group skyrocketed nearly 48%.”

A Close Reading of the Prayers at Trump Rallies

July 29, 2024 · 10:10 am ET · Leave a Comment

McKay Coppins read every prayer offered at Donald Trump’s campaign events since he announced he would run again in 2022 — 58 in total.

“The resulting document—at just over 17,000 words—makes for a strange, revealing religious text: benign in some places, blasphemous in others; contradictory and poignant and frightening and sad and, perhaps most of all, begging for exegesis…”

“The premise of all of these prayers is that America’s covenant can be reestablished, and its special place in God’s kingdom restored, if the nation repents and turns back to him… Many Christians now seem convinced that God has anointed a specific leader who, like those prophets of old, is prepared to defeat the forces of evil and redeem the country. And that leader is running for president.”

Trump Backs Ten Commandments In Schools

June 21, 2024 · 5:45 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Donald Trump endorsed displaying the Ten Commandments in public schools, days after Louisiana became the first state in the country to require it, Axios reports.

Said Trump: “I love the Ten Commandments in public schools, private schools, and many other places. This may be, in fact, the first major step in the revival of religion, which is desperately needed, in our country.”

New York Times: Louisiana’s Ten Commandments law signals a broader Christian agenda.

Trump Has Evangelical Voters Locked In

June 13, 2024 · 9:00 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Eight years ago, needing a running mate to vouch for him among skittish evangelicals, Donald Trump turned to Mike Pence, tossing an olive branch to Republicans wary of the thrice-married real estate mogul who once said he was ‘very pro-choice,'” Politico reports.

“It’s a different story now: To those same voters this year, according to interviews with nearly two dozen religious leaders gathered here for the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention, Trump’s selection is bordering on a forgettable formality — less interesting to them because they’ve already made up their minds to back him, even if begrudgingly so…”

“It’s not that the vice presidential pick is irrelevant to the faithful. Many evangelicals here say they want Trump to pick someone who is sufficiently anti-abortion, or even to Trump’s right on the issue — both because that person could press their cause inside the West Wing and because he or she could be in line to inherit the MAGA movement.”

Alito’s ‘Godliness’ Comment Echoes Christian Movement

June 12, 2024 · 12:00 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“It’s a phrase not commonly associated with legal doctrine: returning America to ‘a place of godliness,'” the New York Times reports.

“And yet when asked by a woman posing as a Catholic conservative at a dinner last week, Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. appeared to endorse the idea. The unguarded moment added to calls for greater scrutiny by Democrats, many of whom are eager to open official investigations into outside influence at the Supreme Court.”

“But the core of the idea expressed to Mr. Alito, that the country must fight the decline of Christianity in public life, goes beyond the questions of bias and influence at the nation’s highest court. An array of conservatives, including antiabortion activists, church leaders and conservative state legislators, has openly embraced the idea that American democracy needs to be grounded in Christian values and guarded against the rise of secular culture.”

“Schools in Louisiana could soon be required by law to display the Ten Commandments in every classroom,” CNN reports.

Jesus Is Their Savior, Trump Is Their Candidate

May 18, 2024 · 12:07 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“As Donald Trump increasingly infuses his campaign with Christian trappings while coasting to a third Republican presidential nomination, his support is as strong as ever among evangelicals and other conservative Christians,” the AP reports.

Said one Trump supporter: “Trump supports Jesus, and without Jesus, America will fall.”

“Many of the T-shirts and hats that were worn and sold at the rally in March proclaimed religious slogans such as ‘Jesus is my savior, Trump is my president’ and ‘God, Guns & Trump.’ One man’s shirt declared, ‘Make America Godly Again,’ with the image of a luminous Jesus putting his supportive hands on Trump’s shoulders.”

“Many attendees said in interviews they believed Trump shared their Christian faith and values. Several cited their opposition to abortion and LGBTQ+ rights, particularly to transgender expressions.”

Franklin Graham Says Democrats Have Turned Against God

May 13, 2024 · 8:14 am ET · Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “Graham’s intrigue with the Trump-backed Bible offers a case-in-point to the presumptive GOP presidential nominee’s stronghold on evangelical Christians, many of them white, ahead of the November election. To many evangelicals, Trump—despite his at times checkered personal life—continues to be their champion with his unapologetic, politically incorrect approach to politics, religion and world affairs. His embrace of Christianity for political promotion and vindication in the face of legal turmoil has only deepened the conviction of Trump’s Christian base, according to officials with his campaign and some evangelical leaders.”

“Republican presidents and presidential candidates have long courted evangelical voters and leaders, but Trump stands out for spurring congregants to pressure their pastors to adopt a more hard-edge political message.”
