A day after disclosing a “consensual, inappropriate messaging relationship” with a local television anchor, Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz (D) resigned Tuesday, the Anchorage Daily News reports.
Anchorage Mayor Admits to ‘Inappropriate’ Relationship
Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz (D) apologized for what he termed a “consensual, inappropriate messaging relationship” with Anchorage news anchor Maria Athens, the Anchorage Daily News reports.
Said Berkowitz: “I apologize to the people of Anchorage for a major lapse in judgment I made several years ago when I had a consensual, inappropriate messaging relationship with reporter Maria Athens. I’m embarrassed and ashamed for the hurt I’ve caused my family and our community. I take responsibility for my actions.”
Alaska Public Radio: “Athens prompted confusion and speculation Friday when she posted a video on her Facebook page claiming that according to reliable sources, Berkowitz had his ‘male genitalia’ posted on an underage girl’s website.”

Falwell Denies Quid Pro Quo for Trump Endorsement
Jerry Fallwell Jr. told Reuters he did not endorse President Trump in return for Michael Cohen keeping racy photos of his wife from being published.
Said Falwell: “Someone stole some pictures I took of my wife in the back yard. Topless. Big deal. OK?”
He added: “It was no quid pro quo. There was no me supporting Trump because of whatever Michael was doing.”
Andrew Gillum Sits for Interview
Former Tallahasse Mayor Andrew Gillum (D) and his wife R. Jai Gillum spent four hours in a wide-ranging interview which will air on the Tamron Hall Show on September 14, according to Yashar Ali.
“This will be the first interview for Gillum or his wife since he was discovered drunk and vomiting in a Miami Beach hotel room last March along with another man who appeared to have overdosed on crystal meth.”
“Gillum wasn’t charged by authorities with any crimes but reporters later discovered that the man he was discovered with was a pornstar who advertised himself as a gay escort leading to questions about Gillum’s sexual orientation.”
Lawmaker Admits to Affair Described In Podcast
Rep. Steven Horsford (D-NV) acknowledged to the Las Vegas Review Journal that he’d carried on a longstanding affair with a former intern for Sen. Harry Reid who has detailed the relationship in a series of podcast episodes.
The woman, Gabriela Linder, confirmed that she is “Love Jones,” the pseudonym of a person who first began sharing her story through a public podcast, “Mistress for Congress,” in April.
Eric Greitens Announces Divorce
“Former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens (R) and former first lady Sheena Greitens are getting divorced,” the Kansas City Star reports.
“The announcement comes two years after Greitens resigned amid allegations of sexually violent misconduct during an extramarital affair, and months after Greitens began speaking publicly again, prompting speculation that he may run for governor in 2020.”
Gillum’s Overdosing Companion Was a Gay Escort
The Daily Mail has more on Andrew Gillum’s strange encounter last night: The married father-of-three, who narrowly missed out on becoming Florida’s first black governor, was with a “hunky gay escort found naked and overdosing on crystal meth in a hotel room.”

Katie Hill Suggests She’ll Run for Office Again
Former Rep. Katie Hill (D-CA) told Playboy she wouldn’t rule out running for office again.
Said Hill: “Obviously I’m going to need some time away, but it’s almost something I want to do on principle.”
She added: “Every single bit of my dirty laundry will be out there – the most private things I didn’t ever think would come out. I’ll be quite literally fully exposed to the voters. So judge me for what I’ve got.”
Lisa Page Speaks
Molly Jong-Fast: “It’s not often that you interview a subject who has no interest in being famous. But recently, I did just that when I sat down with Lisa Page the week before Thanksgiving in my hotel room in Washington. Page, of course, is the former FBI lawyer whose text-message exchanges with agent Peter Strzok that belittled Donald Trump and expressed fear at his possible victory became international news. They were hijacked by Trump to fuel his ‘deep-state’ conspiracy.”
“For the nearly two years since her name first made the papers, she’s been publicly silent (she did have a closed-door interview with House members in July 2018). I asked her why she was willing to talk now. ‘Honestly, his demeaning fake orgasm was really the straw that broke the camel’s back,’ she says. The president called out her name as he acted out an orgasm in front of thousands of people at a Minneapolis rally on Oct. 11, 2019.”
The Most Important Politician of the Decade
Matt Berman: “Anthony Weiner changed the course of American history when he tweeted out a picture of his dick on May 27, 2011.”
“This is not an exaggeration. There is a direct line between Anthony Weiner’s penis and the rise of far-right media, the current state of the country’s biggest city, and the election of Donald Trump. Anthony Weiner is omnipresent over the last 10 years: It is inevitable that if there is a major political moment, Weiner is somewhere on its edges.”
“He personifies the decade in US politics: Weiner began the 2010s with roaring hope and ended it in total defeat. His scandal is unquestionably funny — until you question it, then recognize how much personal tragedy undergirds the whole thing.”
The Humiliation of Katie Hill Offers a Warning
Quinta Jurecic: “This is the first instance of which I am aware when a politically aligned publication has published an explicit photo of an opposition politician for apparent political gain. It’s both a sign of how ugly the political landscape could become and a reminder of how ugly, for the many ordinary people who have suffered this kind of abuse, the world already is.”
Politico: “Hill may be the first millennial member of Congress whose career was upended after the publication of intimate and embarrassing photos, but she’s not likely to be the last.”

The Pee Tape Is Real, But It’s Fake
Ashley Feinberg: “Someone made this video and most likely recorded it in a hotel room that costs about $18,000 a night. Was it all for the sake of feeding rumors, or for confusing everyone, or for tricking some overconfident journalist into the ultimate feat of Fake News? The only thing we can say definitively is that based on the room in which it appears to have been filmed, this can’t possibly be the real thing. Probably.”
Trump Tries to Quell Scandal Saying Quiet Part Out Loud
Washington Post: “Much as he did three years ago — when he asked Russia to hack the emails of his Democratic rival — President Trump on Friday seemed to make a similar request of Ukraine, all but urging the Eastern European nation to investigate Joe Biden, his potential Democratic opponent.”
“For Trump, controversial public disclosures have became almost routine, with the president saying the potentially scandalous part aloud. It is a form of shamelessness worn as a badge of protection — on the implicit theory that the president’s alleged offenses can’t be that serious if he commits them in full public view.”
