The Truth About Hunter Biden’s Indictment

September 15, 2023 at 8:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Graham: “Ironies abound in this story. As former President Donald Trump complains that he is a victim of selective prosecution for his brazen attempts to defy a federal subpoena, Hunter Biden may actually be experiencing it. Republicans who are usually quick to criticize gun laws for abridging a constitutional right are clamoring to see Hunter Biden punished, while some Democrats who prefer stricter gun laws are dismissing the prosecution as a distraction.”

“It’s tempting to think that the charges mark the moment when Hunter Biden’s good luck ran out, but the indictment is really a manifestation of the same luck that he’s always had: He’s a Biden and son of one of the country’s most prominent politicians. That has brought him wealth and connections, but the bill is coming due now.”

James Comer Is the Impeachment Probe’s Wildcard

September 15, 2023 at 8:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Rep. James Comer, the leader of House Republicans’ impeachment inquiry into President Biden, has repeatedly exaggerated and distorted the findings of his investigation into the Biden family this year,” Axios reports.

“Now, with the spotlight getting brighter, even some of Comer’s Republican colleagues and their aides are worried about him being the public face of the inquiry — and hope he’ll take a more measured approach.”

“How Comer handles the inquiry as chair of the House Oversight Committee could be critical to whether many Americans see the impeachment probe as credible or partisan — and could go a long way toward determining how it will affect the 2024 election.”

Security Video Shows Lauren Boebert Vaping

September 15, 2023 at 8:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) denied she was vaping from her seat in a Denver theater before being escorted out, but surveillance footage shows she was lying.

The footage also shows Boebert pulling out her phone in the dark, either to take a selfie or record the show, and waving her arms in the air, seemingly dancing in her seat.

TikTok and U.S. Rekindle Negotiations

September 15, 2023 at 8:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“TikTok’s China-based parent company and the U.S. government are back at the negotiating table over the fate of the immensely popular video app in the United States,” the Washington Post reports.

“The renewal comes six months after the Biden administration told ByteDance that it was done negotiating and that the Chinese company had basically two options: Sell TikTok or wait for Congress to pass a bill that could ban the app nationwide.”

Associated Press: TikTok is hit with $368 million fine under Europe’s strict data privacy rules.

Quote of the Day

September 15, 2023 at 8:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I’m concerned for the speaker that he seems to be a little rattled and unhinged at a time when we need focus and strong effort. Whether or not McCarthy faces a motion to vacate is within his own hands.”

— Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), to CNN.

McCarthy Has Lost All Control

September 15, 2023 at 7:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “When President Joe Biden and Speaker Kevin McCarthy reached a deal to raise the debt limit back in May, they also set a ‘topline number’ for all of the FY2024 spending bills. That would smooth the process of writing the 12 annual appropriations bills. There weren’t going to be any shutdowns or a massive omnibus bill written in secret by party leaders. It would be a return to the good ol’ days of regular order.”

“But instead, McCarthy has faced an ongoing backlash from the House Freedom Caucus that’s largely cost the GOP leadership control of the appropriations process during the last three months.”

Exchange of the Day

September 15, 2023 at 7:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump was interviewed by Kristen Welker, the new host of Meet the Press:

WELKER: I want to ask you about the case related to Mar-a-Lago. A new charge suggests you asked a staffer to delete security camera footage so it wouldn’t get into the hands of investigators.

TRUMP: That’s false.

WELKER: Did you do that? It’s false?

TRUMP: False. But let me tell you what else.

WELKER: Would you testify to that under oath?

TRUMP: Let me tell – sure, I’m going to – I’ll testify –

WELKER: You’d testify to that under oath?

TRUMP: Look, It’s a fake charge by this deranged lunatic prosecutor who lost in the Supreme Court nine to nothing, and he tried to destroy lots of lives. He’s a lunatic. So it’s a fake charge. But more importantly, the tapes weren’t deleted. In other words, there was nothing done to them. And, they were my tapes. I could have fought them. I didn’t even have to give them the tapes, I don’t think. I think I would have won in court. When they asked for the tapes, I said, “Sure.” They’re my tapes. I could have fought them. I didn’t even have to give them. Just so you understand, though, we didn’t delete anything. Nothing was deleted.

WELKER: So that’s false. The people who testified –

TRUMP: Number one, the statement is false. Much more importantly, when the tapes came, and everybody says this, they weren’t deleted.

Disney May Sell ABC News

September 15, 2023 at 7:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Walt Disney Co. has held exploratory talks about selling its ABC network and TV stations to local broadcaster Nexstar Media Group Inc., Bloomberg reports.

CNN: “In conversations with more than a half-dozen people inside and around ABC News that CNN spoke to Thursday evening, it was made clear that a feeling of dread and trepidation is washing over the outlet as they face the unknown.”

The GOP Debate Stage Is Shrinking

September 15, 2023 at 7:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Eight candidates participated in the first debate last month. With only a week and a half left to qualify, two are still hunting for an invitation to the second on Sept. 27.”

“And there are signs that the debates after that could see the number of participants contract considerably.”

“The candidates whose participation in future debates is most in doubt are scrambling to influence the qualifications ahead of any announcement. The campaign manager for Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) sent a letter to the Republican National Committee this week asking for an overhaul of the criteria — without which the South Carolina senator could find himself booted from the stage for the third debate. The same fate could also befall former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.”

Big Majority Support Medicare Drug Negotiations

September 15, 2023 at 7:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

AP-NORC poll: “Three-quarters of Americans, or 76%, favor allowing the federal health care program for the elderly to negotiate prices for certain prescription drugs. That includes strong majorities of Democrats (86%) and Republicans (66%)… About one in five Americans are neutral on the issue, while 6% outright oppose it.”

“But the same poll shows Biden’s approval rating, at 40%, is about where it’s been for the last year. Americans are split on how Biden is handling the issue of prescription drug prices — 48% approve, making it a relative strong point for Biden, but 50% disapprove.”

Congress In Crisis

September 15, 2023 at 7:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The government is barreling toward a shutdown. House Republicans threaten to impeach the president — though some of them don’t see the evidence. A Republican senator has a one-man blockade on military promotions with no end in sight.”

“The Capitol is in crisis. And though Democrats control much of the government, Republican divisions are driving the chaos.”

“Each of the Hill’s messes will reach a peak this fall, starting with a Sept. 30 shutdown deadline. Each on its own is a headache; the collection of problems lawmakers have to juggle at once is almost unthinkable.”

Automotive News: “Talks stalled in the final hours of negotiations, even as the automakers offered record raises as high as 20%.”

Said UAW President Shawn Fain, per the Detroit News: “This is our generation’s defining moment. The money is there. The cause is righteous. The world is watching, and the UAW is ready to stand up.”
