Margin-of-Error Races as Far as the Eye Can See

September 30, 2026 · 4:10 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Charlie Cook: “Today there are at least seven Senate contests in which serious polls put the difference between the two candidates within the margin of error. There are five Republican-held Senate seats with margin-of-error races. Three are held by incumbents: Sens. Dan Sullivan of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, and Jon Husted of Ohio. The other two, Iowa and Texas, are open seats. This is not counting the open seat in North Carolina, which has become hopeless for the GOP… I am also keeping a close eye on Kansas, where I would not be surprised to see it become very close.”

“Most polling shows Democrat Troy Jackson ahead of Collins in Maine by a few points, but Jackson is an underwhelming candidate and his advertising doesn’t seem to be compensating for that… I’d put Collins as a narrow favorite thanks to her superior political skills, the effectiveness of her campaign operation, and Jackson having enough baggage to keep him from fully consolidating the Democratic vote.”

“At the same time, my hunch is that Texas does flip. In state Attorney General Ken Paxton, Republicans managed to nominate perhaps the one possible candidate who could lose to a Democrat… If Democrat James Talarico wins, it will be despite his blue jersey and more-progressive views, not because of them. My advice to him if he wins: Rent an apartment, don’t buy a house.”

“Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) filed suit a day after Smith testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee — on which Blackburn sits — and defended his office’s investigation, including its effort to obtain the records of Blackburn and dozens of other GOP lawmakers who spoke with Trump and his advisers during a four-day period in January 2021.”

Republicans Fall Short On Last-Ditch Affordability Push

September 30, 2026 · 2:16 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Senate Republicans made a late push to show voters they were trying to rein in the high costs of living but the legislation failed to advance, as polls signal their control of the chamber could be in jeopardy in November’s midterm elections,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The Republican bill related to artificial-intelligence data centers was blocked Wednesday by Democrats, who dismissed it as the product of a desperate political exercise, and no votes are planned on issues such as suspending the gas tax. The AI measure’s failure allows Republicans to paint Democrats as obstructionists but deprives them of a legislative win to run on as they head home to campaign.”

Republicans Prepare to Extend the Debt Ceiling Thru 2029

September 30, 2026 · 2:04 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Washington Sun: “Senate Republicans are laying the groundwork to quickly extend the federal debt ceiling through the end of President Donald Trump’s term should they lose control of Congress this November, aiming to prevent Democrats from weaponizing the issue to extract concessions in divided government.”

“The debt ceiling, which is set to be reached sometime around spring of 2027, has mostly been raised on a bipartisan basis, creating the opportunity for the minority party to extract concessions from the White House desperate to avoid an economic shock. But congressional Republicans raised the debt limit last year on a party-line vote, and are hoping to move to deprive Democrats of a potentially powerful bargaining chip next year.”

Eric Schmitt Defends Mix-Up That Led to Viral Gaffe

“Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) expressed no remorse Wednesday for falsely accusing Jack Smith of lying to Congress about attending a basketball game as a guise to investigate President Donald Trump — and for creating a viral moment that critics have seized on to undercut the GOP’s case against the former special counsel,” Politico reports.

Said Schmitt: “He has lied before to Congress.”

FTC Launches Broad Investigation Into Anthropic, OpenAI

“The Federal Trade Commission has opened a broad investigation into the safety of artificial intelligence systems made by Anthropic and OpenAI, a senior agency official said Wednesday,” the Washington Post reports.

“The investigation could provide backing for the Trump administration’s position that existing laws are sufficient to hold artificial intelligence companies accountable, as officials seek to resist a push by some in the industry and Congress to establish a new system of regulations for the technology.”

Congress Set to Leave Washington with No AI Progress

September 30, 2026 · 1:24 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Facing a growing backlash over the boom in data center construction and widespread concern over the safety of artificial intelligence, Congress is set to depart Washington this week ahead of the midterm elections having accomplished nothing to address either issue,” the New York Times reports.

“Eager to show they hear the public alarm over A.I. as they fight to keep their majority, Republicans in the Senate on Wednesday were attempting to bring up a bill intended to insulate Americans from rising electricity costs tied to data centers. But Democrats were expected to block it, noting that the legislation was not enforceable and arguing it would do little to significantly curb energy prices.”

Eric Schmitt’s ‘Dirtbag’ Attack Rebounds

September 30, 2026 · 12:25 pm ET · Leave a Comment

From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch editorial board:

“Just when you think Eric Schmitt couldn’t possibly embarrass himself and his constituents any more than he already has, he goes in for a rhetorical layup, gratuitously throws an elbow, spectacularly misses the shot and then stomps around the court indignantly when the ref calls foul.”

“That’s all metaphorical, of course. What Missouri’s perpetually seething junior senator really, truly did on Tuesday (in front of the whole country!) was to proffer a loony right-wing conspiracy based on some misunderstood text messages; falsely accuse a prosecutor of perjury; call him a ‘villain’ and a ‘total dirtbag’ — and then stand by that playground-level pejorative even after the whole thing turned out to be a lazy mistake on the part of Schmitt and his staff regarding, of all things, a basketball game.”

New York Magazine: Eric Schmitt’s failed Jack Smith takedown is instant classic.
