“The Republican National Committee’s Washington headquarters was briefly evacuated on Wednesday as police investigated two vials of blood that had been addressed to former President Donald Trump following the presumptive presidential nominee’s takeover of the national party apparatus,” the AP reports.

“Hazardous-materials teams were called in after the vials were discovered, according to the U.S. Capitol Police, who said they would continue to investigate. It was unclear if anyone came into contact with the blood and to whom it belonged.”

Absolute Immunity or Not?

May 22, 2024 at 10:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) claimed the Department of Justice and FBI “were planning to assassinate President Trump and gave the green light.”

Trump piled on in a fundraising email: “They were authorized to shoot me!”

Of course, it’s not actually true that Biden tried to assassinate Trump, but by Trump’s own logic wouldn’t he have the “absolute immunity” to do so?

“The Louisiana House on Tuesday passed a bill that classifies the two drugs used to induce an abortion as ‘controlled dangerous substances,'” the Washington Post reports.

“Abortion opponents hope the measure, now on its way to Gov. Jeff Landry, will be a template for conservative states trying to end the procedure.”

Some great detail in the New York Times profile of Nicole Shanahan, who Robert F. Kennedy Jr. picked as his running mate:

“At that party, Elon Musk and Ms. Shanahan took ketamine, a popular party drug that is legal with a prescription, and disappeared together for several hours, according to four people briefed on the event and documents related to it.”

Half of Swing-State Voters Fear Violence Around Election

May 22, 2024 at 10:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll found half of swing-state voters say they’re worried about violence surrounding the presidential election, suggesting misgivings about how an acrimonious race and its results will be received by a highly polarized electorate.

Roughly equal shares of Democrats and Republicans hold that fear, and it is even more common among independents.

How the Media Creates Perceptions of a Bad Economy

May 22, 2024 at 9:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A headline today from CNN shows how this phenomenon is amplified by the news media: “High inflation made finances worse for 65% of Americans last year.”

Down-Ballot Democrats Work to Boost Biden

May 22, 2024 at 9:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In presidential contests, the top-of-the-ticket is generally expected to lift same-party candidates further down the ballot to possible victory on his or her coattails. But in 2024, Biden’s coattails appear, at this point in time, to be short, if they exist at all. In fact, some Democrats in key Senate and local legislative races are hoping to use their own popularity to generate excitement and draw out voters otherwise not energized by Biden, trying to create an updraft for the president,” the Washington Post reports.

“Call it the reverse coattails effect.”

“This somewhat novel concept essentially acknowledges the lack of activist energy swirling around the 81-year-old incumbent president. For Democrats, the goal isn’t just to win their own races, but to run up as big a margin as possible.”
