Clovis Admits He Has No Science Credentials

November 2, 2017 at 8:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s chief scientist nominee, Sam Clovis, who now serves as the agency’s senior White House adviser, confirmed in an Oct. 17 letter obtained by the Washington Post that he has no academic credentials in either science or agriculture.

The 2008 farm bill specifies that appointees to the position should be chosen “from among distinguished scientists with specialized training or significant experience in agricultural research, education, and economics,” given that the official is “responsible for the coordination of the research, education, and extension activities of the Department.”

Update: The Washington Post reports Clovis has withdrawn his nomination.

Comey Will Write on Truth, Lies and Leadership

November 2, 2017 at 8:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former FBI Director James Comey’s forthcoming book now has a title: A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership.

“Comey shares his never-before-told experiences from some of the highest-stakes situations of his career in the past two decades of American government, exploring what good, ethical leadership looks like, and how it drives sound decisions.”

Why Manafort Won’t Talk

November 2, 2017 at 8:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Martin London: “The operative element of the prosecutor’s strategy is the defendant’s fear. But do Manafort and others close to the Administration really have anything to fear from Mueller? No, they do not, because the President is not going to sit by and let either himself or his children go to jail. Period. This is not the normal ballgame.”

“I project this scenario: Manafort, having already pled ‘not guilty,’ clams up. He has no incentive to speak because he has no fear. Months (or years) from now, just before trial, Trump issues some tweets to the effect of This is all an attack by Hillary Clinton supporters!, and he pardons Manafort and anybody else who has been indicted by Mueller. If Mueller then brings Manafort before the Grand Jury and demands he answer questions because he no longer has any legitimate fear of federal prosecution because of his pardon, Manafort will take the Fifth because he is still subject to criminal liability in New York State, where much of the money laundering occurred. Manafort’s assertion of the privilege will be upheld because Trump’s pardon affected only federal charges.”

U.S. Prosecutors May Charge Russian Hackers

November 2, 2017 at 8:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Justice Department has identified more than six members of the Russian government involved in hacking the Democratic National Committee’s computers and swiping sensitive information that became public during the 2016 presidential election,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Prosecutors and agents have assembled evidence to charge the Russian officials and could bring a case next year, these people said. Discussions about the case are in the early stages.”

Trump Calls for Execution of Suspected Terrorist

November 2, 2017 at 7:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump posted a message on Twitter declaring that the suspect in the recent terrorist act in New York City should be executed, the New York Times reports.

“Presidents are typically advised never to weigh in on pending criminal cases because such comments can be used by defense lawyers to argue that their clients cannot get a fair trial — especially when the head of the executive branch that will prosecute the charges advocates the ultimate punishment before a judge has heard a single shred of evidence at trial. But Mr. Trump has disregarded such advice in other instances, as well.”

Divided GOP Unites By Attacking Hillary Clinton

November 2, 2017 at 7:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans say doubling down on investigating Hillary Clinton is a smart strategy in the coming months as the cloud from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation looms over the White House,” The Hill reports.

“Even though Clinton does not hold public office anymore, they say she remains the one person who can rally the Republican base and unify a splintered party constantly bickering with itself. And the Republicans making this pitch aren’t just the Breitbart News crowd.”

Said GOP strategist Susan Del Percio: “It may not be the best policy strategy, it certainly is a good political strategy. When it comes to the president, he must always have an enemy to punch at. It’s actually a pretty safe strategy.”

Inside Hillary Clinton’s Secret Takeover of the DNC

November 2, 2017 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donna Brazile: “The agreement—signed by Amy Dacey, the former CEO of the DNC, and Robby Mook with a copy to Marc Elias—specified that in exchange for raising money and investing in the DNC, Hillary would control the party’s finances, strategy, and all the money raised. Her campaign had the right of refusal of who would be the party communications director, and it would make final decisions on all the other staff. The DNC also was required to consult with the campaign about all other staffing, budgeting, data, analytics, and mailings.”

“The funding arrangement with HFA and the victory fund agreement was not illegal, but it sure looked unethical. If the fight had been fair, one campaign would not have control of the party before the voters had decided which one they wanted to lead. This was not a criminal act, but as I saw it, it compromised the party’s integrity.”

Trump’s Female Accusers May Get Their Day In Court

November 2, 2017 at 6:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“While allegations of sexual misconduct against powerful men in recent weeks have drawn wide public support and prompted quick response, women who came forward during the presidential race with accusations against Donald Trump said they spent the past year feeling dismissed and forgotten,” the New York Times reports.

“But that could change if a defamation lawsuit brought by a woman who accused Mr. Trump of unwanted sexual advances is allowed to proceed in New York State Supreme Court, a legal ruling that could come before the end of the year. Lawyers in the suit sought a subpoena seeking all Trump campaign records related to his female accusers. If the case advances, the accusers could be deposed, going up against Mr. Trump yet again.”

The Rise and Fall of Gary Cohn’s Fed Dreams

November 2, 2017 at 6:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The former Goldman Sachs president, now Trump’s top economic adviser, was a front-runner for the Fed job until August, when he publicly broke with the president over his handling of fatal neo-Nazi violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.”

“As recently as last month, the two still appeared at odds. Guests at a black-tie gala in Washington in mid-October honoring First Lady Melania Trump were treated to an awkward display between the two, as the president stared straight ahead and continued to make small talk with others while Cohn was trying talk to him, said an attendee.”

“Cohn is telling people he never really wanted the Fed job anyway. The Fed chairmanship, though immensely powerful, can be a dreary slog through endless meetings deciphering esoteric economic signals followed by tedious trips to the Hill to answer questions from grandstanding members of Congress.”

The Trumpification of Ed Gillespie

November 2, 2017 at 6:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “A Republican victory in Virginia would demonstrate that the president has not become a liability in off-year elections. In addition, given Gillespie’s post-primary strategic shift to Trumpian themes, a Republican win would serve to demonstrate that the issues of immigration, crime and race continue to win elections, even in a state where Democrats have been thought to have the upper hand.”

“If painting Northam as a friend to violent Salvadoran gangs and pedophiles seems like a stretch, that’s American politics in 2017. We used to think that however grotesque they were, there was still a difference between overt declarations and explicit racial politics on one hand and dog whistles and implicit racial politics on the other. That distinction seems to be fading, if it is not gone altogether. Whether the Gillespie-Trump brand of Republicanism sells to the Virginia electorate this year will tell us a lot about where American politics stand a year after the election of President Trump — and the outcome will also offer tantalizing hints about where we are headed in 2018 and 2020.”

11 Lawmakers Put Family Members on Payroll

November 2, 2017 at 6:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Hill: “Eleven members of Congress have paid family members from their campaign accounts so far this year.”

“The practice has also come under increased scrutiny since the election of President Trump, who installed his daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner into top White House jobs. Neither takes a salary, but both wield significant power as senior advisers to the president.”

Americans Are Officially Freaking Out

November 1, 2017 at 8:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “Almost two-thirds of Americans, or 63%, report being stressed about the future of the nation, according to the American Psychological Association’s Eleventh Stress in America survey… The ‘current social divisiveness’ in America was reported by 59% of those surveyed as a cause of their own malaise.”

“A majority of the more than 3,400 Americans polled, 59%, said ‘they consider this to to be the lowest point in our nation’s history that they can remember.’ That sentiment spanned generations, including those that lived through World War II, the Vietnam War, and the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11.”

Trump Insists He’s Not Angry Over Indictments

November 1, 2017 at 8:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump called the New York Times to insist that he was not “angry at anybody” and that investigations into his campaign’s links to Russia had not come near him personally.

Said Trump: “I’m not under investigation, as you know.”

After noting his “fantastic poll numbers” he said: “I’m in the office early and leave late; it’s very smooth. Honestly, I’m really enjoying it.”

Pelosi Moves to Muzzle Impeachment Talk

November 1, 2017 at 8:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Pelosi told lawmakers at a Democratic leadership meeting soon after that she had reached out to the Democratic megadonor to tell him that his $10 million ad campaign was a distraction.”

“Pelosi is eager to show her party can govern — in contrast to the chaos surrounding Trump — and believes that a reputation as the ‘No Drama Democrats’ is key to taking back the House in 2018 and whisking her backing into the speaker’s chair.”

“While not an official slogan, Pelosi has discussed the strategy broadly in recent leadership and caucus meetings, urging members to avoid talk of impeachment and resist taking Trump’s bait on whatever topic is dominating his Twitter feed that day.”

What Will Congress Do If Trump Fires Mueller?

November 1, 2017 at 8:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rolling Stone: “Democrats fear Trump may take steps to push Mueller out in order to bury the investigation that seems to keep getting closer to him and members of his family. There are two competing bipartisan proposals floating around the Senate that would set up barriers to protect the special counsel from being ousted by the president. And with the investigation heating up, Democrats are itching to pass the bills quickly.”

“Democrats who are at the center of this push to protect Mueller say their GOP colleagues tell them when they speak with them in private that they’re open to supporting their proposals – the announcements Monday really shook many in the party.”

GOP in Disarray Ahead of Tax Plan Rollout

November 1, 2017 at 6:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Republicans are scrambling to release their tax bill on Thursday after being forced to postpone the roll-out because of resistance from GOP lawmakers from Democratic states,” Politico reports.

“Tensions are running ‘very high,’ said a source familiar with the 11th-hour talks… In fact, Republican tax writers could be heard speaking in raised voices during a more than two-hour meeting at the Capitol Tuesday night. Sources say there is some unhappiness among rank-and-file members who feel the plan has been written largely by party leaders without their input.”

“White House economic adviser Gary Cohn told GOP senators during a closed-door lunch Wednesday that House Republicans need to release their tax bill before Friday, when Trump is leaving for Asia.”

Thousands Attended Election Protest Arranged by Russians

November 1, 2017 at 4:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“BlackMattersUS, a social media campaign believed to be Russians meddling in the U.S. politics, promoted a large anti-Trump march in New York City in the days after the election,” BuzzFeed reports.

“The archived events page shows the event was shared with 61,000 people, 33,000 were interested in the event and 16,000 people marked themselves as going… In the weeks after the election, it wasn’t hard to convince people in New York City to attend an anti-Trump protest, which might help explain the size of the protest.”

Sinclair Won’t Hire O’Reilly

November 1, 2017 at 4:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bill O’Reilly, the former Fox News prime-time host who was forced out this year after a series of sexual harassment claims, is apparently not welcome at conservative Sinclair Broadcast Group, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Said Sinclair CEO Chris Ripley: “We get approached all the time by a lot of people, and he did approach us. But we do not have any interest in hiring him.”

However, Politico reports that Newsmax is courting O’Reilly for a potential deal that would return him to cable television.
