Strange Appointed to Senate Seat Vacated by Sessions

February 9, 2017 at 8:53 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley (R) named state Attorney General Luther Strange (R) to the U.S. Senate seat left empty by Jeff Sessions, the AP reports.

“In elevating Strange to the U.S. Senate, Bentley also will have the authority to appoint a state attorney general to fulfill the remainder of Strange’s term. The appointment comes two months after Strange asked an Alabama House committee to pause an impeachment probe of Bentley, who was accused last year of having an affair with a onetime top political adviser.”

A Short History of the Trump Family

February 9, 2017 at 8:36 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sidney Blumenthal: “A week after the inauguration, Nineteen Eighty-Four and The Origins of Totalitarianism were number one and number 36 respectively on the US Amazon bestseller list, but the true-life Donald J. Trump story has more to do with what Scott Fitzgerald called ‘foul dust’ than with ideas or ideology. Reckoning with Trump means descending into the place that made him.”

“What he represents, above all, is the triumph of an underworld of predators, hustlers, mobsters, clubhouse politicians and tabloid sleaze that festered in a corner of New York City, a vindication of his mentor, the Mafia lawyer Roy Cohn, a figure unknown to the vast majority of enthusiasts who jammed Trump’s rallies and hailed him as the authentic voice of the people.”

Quote of the Day

February 9, 2017 at 8:31 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“You’ve never seen so much paper on a President’s desk. That’s because we’re negotiating lots of deals for our country, which will be tremendous.”

— President Trump, in remarks at the White House while meeting with business leaders.

Obama’s Party Building Legacy Splits Democrats

February 9, 2017 at 8:21 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “A painful Democratic rift over Barack Obama’s political legacy is finally bursting into the open. For years, the former president’s popularity among Democrats stifled any public critiques of his stewardship of the party — a period in which the party suffered tremendous losses at the state and local levels.”

“But now that Obama and the political operation that succeeded his campaign, Organizing For Action, have expressed interest in playing a role in the task of rebuilding, it’s sparking pitched debates over how much blame he deserves for the gradual hollowing out of a party that now has less control of state elected positions than at any other time in nearly a century.”

Jonathan Swan: “After eight years of Obama, Democrats are learning how to be in the opposition. And they’ve now got powerful new tools, lessons from the Tea Party movement, and authentic national rage to be tapped.”

Trump Struggles to Find Communications Director

February 9, 2017 at 8:19 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The White House has gone without a full-time communications director since Trump was sworn in last month, and although chief of staff Reince Priebus is spearheading a robust effort to fill the position, his overtures to several Republican communications professionals have been met with disinterest, according to a half-dozen sources with knowledge of the situation. At least two candidates have turned down the job, a position normally coveted by Washington political operatives.”

“Trump’s unusual involvement in crafting his own message — and his insistence on doing so from his perch in the West Wing — poses a challenge for any aide whose responsibility it would be to shape the narrative arc of his administration.”

Little Getting Done In Congress

February 9, 2017 at 8:15 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “Democrats are under intense pressure from their base to oppose Trump, his policies and nominees — a Politico/Morning Consult poll showed this week that more than half of Democrats want Democratic lawmakers to stand up against Republicans. Only time will tell if that calculation proves politically fruitful. But if Democrats continue to delay nominations, they will also slow the GOP agenda.”

“Republicans will have to keep government funding by April 28, lift the debt ceiling by the spring or summer and pass a supplemental spending bill that will include billions for the Pentagon and Trump’s border wall. Those three items could be incredibly time consuming. On the House side, there will be delays as well. House Republicans will be especially eager to load up spending bills with policy provisions advancing their agenda — they tried, but mostly failed, to do that during the Obama presidency. Put quite simply, don’t get your hopes up. The prospects for quick action on Obamacare, tax reform and infrastructure look bleak.”

Mattis Works to Soothe Allies

February 9, 2017 at 8:12 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As President Trump’s new Pentagon chief, Jim Mattis has a long list of tasks ahead, including devising a more aggressive campaign to combat the Islamic State and restoring military readiness after years of budget cuts. But a few weeks into his tenure, the retired general’s most visible role has been of a different sort: soothing Americans and allies unnerved by the president and some of his top advisers,” the Washington Post reports.

“Mattis, wrapping up a visit to Japan and South Korean last week, carried a message of constancy and restraint on many of the foreign policy issues whose fate has generated anxiety since Trump’s election.”

Trump Attacks Blumenthal for Lying About His Record

February 9, 2017 at 8:09 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump “attacked the military record of Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), suggesting that the Connecticut lawmaker misrepresented his conversation with Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch as he did with his service in the Marine Corps Reserves,” Politico reports.

Gorsuch reportedly told Blumenthal that he was “demoralized” and “disheartened”  by Trump’s attacks on the military. A Gorsuch spokesman confirmed the comments were made.

Gorsuch Was Smart to Distance Himself from Trump

February 8, 2017 at 11:33 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Judge Neil Gorsuch told Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) that he was “demoralized” and “disheartened” by the President Trump’s recent attacks on the judiciary but Rick Hasen thinks it was “a smart political move” likely planned in advance.

“And this is the perfect response politically. It expresses disappointment with restraint. It is not, as some have said, that the president’s attacks on the judiciary are ‘dangerous’ or ‘unprecedented’ or poised to precipitate a constitutional crisis. This is about the least he could get away with saying while still criticizing. And any more could undermine his standing with the President. So it puts him in the sweet spot.”

What If Trump’s Approval Stayed This Low Until 2018?

February 8, 2017 at 11:11 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

President Trump has record low approval ratings for a new president. In fact, they are lower than any president since modern polling began. If his approval rate were to stay this low until the 2018 midterm elections, history suggests Republicans would lose a significant number of seats in the House of Representatives.

Graham Says Silencing of Warren Was ‘Long Overdue’

February 8, 2017 at 5:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) supported the silencing of Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) on the Senate floor last night, CNN reports.

Said Graham: “The bottom line is, it was long overdue with her. I mean, she is clearly running for the nomination in 2020.”

He added: “The Democratic Party is being pushed really hard by the most extreme voices in their community, and they just don’t know how to handle it. If they empower her, then I think the Democratic Party is gonna lose way with the vast majority of the American people.”

Gorsuch Criticized Trump Attacks on Judges

February 8, 2017 at 5:21 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch told Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) that President Trump’s tweets about the judiciary are “demoralizing” and “disheartening,” CNN reports.

Said Blumenthal: “He said very specifically that they were demoralizing and disheartening and he characterized them very specifically that way. I said they were more than disheartening and I said to him that he has an obligation to make his views clear to the American people, so they understand how abhorrent or unacceptable President Trump’s attacks on the judiciary are.”

Redistricting Battles Have Already Begun

February 8, 2017 at 5:01 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Stuart Rothenberg: “While the 2020 census is still three years away, the fight for control of the congressional redistricting process is underway — in developing gubernatorial contests in a handful of key states.”

“Although the 2018 and 2020 electoral results could change things dramatically, it now appears that three states will be at the front lines in the partisan congressional redistricting battle: Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Each will elect a governor next year who, because of the veto, will have a role in redistricting.”

“Republicans controlled redistricting in all three states after the last census, and they were very aggressive in drawing maps that maximized their advantage.”

9/11 Mastermind Wrote Letter to Obama

February 8, 2017 at 3:10 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The alleged mastermind of the Sept. 11 terror attacks wrote former President Barack Obama in a long suppressed letter that America brought the 9/11 attacks on itself for years of foreign policy that killed innocent people across the world,” the Miami Herald reports.

Said Khalid Sheik Mohammed: “It was not we who started the war against you in 9/11. It was you and your dictators in our land.”

“It is dated January 2015 but didn’t reach the White House until a military judge ordered Guantánamo prison to deliver it days before Obama left office.”

Puzder Said 40% of His Employees Were Undocumented

February 8, 2017 at 2:27 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump’s nominee for Labor Secretary, fast-food executive Andrew Puzder, has in the past said that up to 40% of his employees were in the country illegally, CNN reports.

“The CKE restaurants executive made the comments… while speaking about how the E-Verify system–a database that enables businesses to check the citizenship status of their prospective employees–made it easier for his company to comply with the law.”

Celebrities Bail from White House Correspondents’ Dinner

February 8, 2017 at 2:07 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hollywood Reporter: “President Trump is expected to attend the April 29 event at the Washington Hilton. But others are bailing on the festivities this year. Sources tell THR the casts of the D.C.-set House of Cards, Veep and Scandal likely will not attend (all have had a presence during the Obama years), while the WHCA has yet to secure a comedian headliner, as is customary by February.”

“Many media organizations are waffling on their usual plans for the weekend. It’s unclear whether MSNBC will host its traditional afterparty, an event known for anchor and amateur mixologist Rachel Maddow tending the bar. Also unknown is whether Funny or Die will host its Friday night kickoff party. Already, Vanity Fair and The New Yorker — both of whose editors have been critical of Trump — have pulled out of the festivities.”

What Democrats Can Learn From Dodd-Frank

February 8, 2017 at 1:48 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The following post for members is by David T.S. Jonas, a former economic and labor policy aide to Sen. Al Franken (D-MN).

With Congressional Republicans and the Trump administration ready to dismantle as much of Dodd-Frank as they can, now is a good time to assess how Democrats fared in trying to reform Wall Street and putting an end to “too big to fail.”

Most of Europe Supports a Muslim Ban

February 8, 2017 at 1:32 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Chatham House survey finds that a majority in all but two of the ten European countries surveyed supports a complete ban of immigration from Muslim countries.

Only the United Kingdom at 47% and Spain at 41% didn’t have a majority.
