Rep. Martha Roby (R-AL) said she will not stand for re-election next year, the Montgomery Advertiser reports.
Roby did not specify a reason for her departure from Congress in a statement emailed on Friday and posted on Twitter.
Roll Call: “Roby is one of just 13 Republican women in the House. She’s the second Republican woman to announce her retirement, following Indiana’s Susan W. Brooks and the fifth Republican to announce this year that they will not run for re-election.”
Rep. Martha Roby (R-AL), “who angered constituents by withdrawing her support from then-candidate Donald Trump in 2016, was forced into a runoff in Alabama’s conservative-leaning 2nd congressional district,” the Washington Post reports.
“Roby un-endorsed Trump after the explosive “Access Hollywood” tape in which he bragged about sexual assault.”
“Roby will face challenger Bobby Bright (R), who accused Roby in commercials of turning her back on Trump. The runoff will be held July 17.”
Former Rep. Bobby Bright (R-AL) announced that he was mounting a campaign to reclaim his old seat from Rep. Martha Roby (R-AL), but this time as a Republican, the Birmingham News reports.
“The one-term congressman downplayed his switching parties, pointing out that at one point Gov. Kay Ivey, Sen. Richard Shelby and even President Donald Trump were Democrats. Bright said the GOP more closely aligns with his values.”
