Barton Set Up Legal Defense Fund

August 27, 2018 at 8:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) “has set up a legal expense fund to deal with costs he incurred last year after lewd images he shared in an extramarital affair were made public, an episode that caused the Republican to not seek re-election after more than 30 years in office,” the Dallas Morning News reports.

“Barton activated the trust in June after the House Ethics Committee approved it to raise and spend money to cover legal expenses in connection with his ‘official duties and position in Congress, and matters bearing on his reputation or fitness for office,’ according to documents.”

Barton Won’t Run Again

November 30, 2017 at 12:05 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX), whose private life came under national scrutiny after sexual images he shared in an extramarital relationship were made public, told the Dallas Morning News that he won’t seek re-election.

Said Barton: “I’ve been listening to a lot of people the last week in Texas… There are enough people who lost faith in me that it’s time to step aside and let there be a new voice for the 6th district in Washington, so I am not going to run for re-election.”

Republicans Urge Barton Not to Run Again

November 28, 2017 at 1:04 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“One day after a group of local Republicans met privately with Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) about a nude photo of him that ended up online — and his political future — a number of Tarrant County Republicans are calling on the longtime congressman to not seek re-election,” the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

“Barton told the crowd that he’s gathering feedback and that a consulting firm is polling many party faithful to see if his behavior and the nude photos would make a difference in whether they would support him in the primary election next year.”

Barton Told Woman He Would Call Police

November 22, 2017 at 10:35 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX), “who apologized for a lewd photo of him that circulated on the Internet, told a woman to whom he had sent sexually explicit photos, videos and messages that he would report her to the Capitol Police because she could expose his behavior,” according to a recording reviewed by the Washington Post.

“The woman described encounters and contact spanning a five-year period that began online after she posted a message on Barton’s Facebook page in 2011, leading to the sexually explicit exchanges and ultimately a pair of physical sexual encounters in Washington and Texas. Over time, she said, she became aware of and corresponded with multiple other women who engaged in relationships with Barton, who represents a suburban Dallas district and is one of the most senior Republicans in the House.”
