Trump Threatened to Send Troops to Mexico

February 1, 2017 at 10:32 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump threatened in a phone call with his Mexican counterpart to send U.S. troops to stop “bad hombres down there” unless the Mexican military does more to control them, according to a transcript of the conversation obtained by the Associated Press.

Said Trump: “You aren’t doing enough to stop them. I think your military is scared. Our military isn’t, so I just might send them down to take care of it.”

Trump was also quoted by Aristegui Noticias saying: “I don’t need the Mexicans. I don’t need Mexico. We are going to build the wall and you all are going to pay for it, like it or not.”

Trump Agrees to Not Talk About Mexico Paying for Wall

January 28, 2017 at 7:04 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In a bid to repair a rift with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, President Trump agreed on Friday to stop speaking publicly about one of his signature campaign promises: that Mexico would pay for the construction of a wall along the U.S. border,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The concession was detailed in the joint U.S.-Mexico statement after the two leaders had an hour-long phone call, but not in the White House’s version. A White House official said Mr. Trump did indeed agree to stop talking publicly about Mexico paying for the wall, which was one of his most oft-repeated lines that rallied his supporters during the 2016 campaign.”

Trump’s Mexico Stand May Produce Backlash

January 27, 2017 at 10:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal editorial: “Some six million U.S. jobs depend on trade with Mexico. But the much larger risk is that Mexicans will sour on progress toward joining their North American neighbors as prosperous free-market democracies. This is the moment that Mexico’s left—dormant but not dead—has been waiting for as anti-American Andrés Manuel López Obrador prepares to run for President again in 2018.”

“Mr. Trump is a foreign-affairs neophyte, but he is already learning that nations can’t be bullied like GOP candidates or CEOs. They have their own nationalist political dynamics and when attacked they push back. Mr. Trump said as a candidate that he’d treat America’s friends better than Mr. Obama did, but his first move has been to treat Mexico like Mr. Obama treated Israel. On present course he may get comparable results, or worse.”

Trump Proposes 20% Tax on Mexican Imports

January 26, 2017 at 3:49 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump plans to make Mexico pay for his border wall by imposing a 20 percent tax on all imports into the United States from Mexico, raising billions of dollars that would cover the cost of the new barrier,” the New York Times reports.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer “said the 20 percent tax on annual Mexican imports would raise $10 billion a year and would easily pay for a border wall that is estimated to cost between $8 billion and $20 billion. The value of imported goods from Mexico in 2015 was $296 billion.”

However, the White House insisted a few hours later “that it was not endorsing the plan.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on Twitter: “Simply put, any policy proposal which drives up costs of Corona, tequila, or margaritas is a big-time bad idea. Mucho Sad.”

Mexican President Cancels Visit with Trump

January 26, 2017 at 12:08 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto canceled his upcoming visit with President Trump amid outrage in Mexico about Trump’s plan to build a border wall and his threats to force Mexico to pay for it, the Washington Post reports.

“The growing conflict between the United States and Mexico has quickly deteriorated since Trump took power. Trump has proposed several policies that Mexico opposes, including the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement, increased deportations, and the border wall.”

Mexican President Considers Canceling Visit

January 25, 2017 at 10:25 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “With just a few strokes of the pen on Wednesday, the new American president signed an executive order to beef up the nation’s deportation force and start construction on a new wall between the nations. Adding to the perceived insult was the timing of the order: It came on the first day of talks between top Mexican officials and their counterparts in Washington, and just days before a meeting between the two countries’ presidents.”

“The action was enough to prompt President Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico to consider scrapping his plans to visit the White House on Tuesday, according to Mexican officials. It mattered little to them whether Mr. Trump’s order would receive congressional approval or the funding required to fulfill it.”

Meanwhile, The Hill reports Peña Nieto reaffirmed his country will not pay for a border wall.

Mexico Still Not Paying for the Wall

January 12, 2017 at 7:38 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto reiterated “that Mexico would not pay for a border wall between it and the U.S., despite President-elect Donald Trump’s claims to the contrary earlier in the day,” Politico reports.

Said Nieto: “It is evident that we have some differences with the new government of the United States, like the topic of the wall, that Mexico of course will not pay.”

Trump Had Been Planning Mexico Trip for Weeks

August 31, 2016 at 9:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump’s visit to Mexico was not hastily put together, but the result of a couple of weeks of closely guarded work,” sources close to the campaign told NBC News.

“Trump insiders quietly reached out to officials in Mexico with the goal being to prompt an invitation from President Enrique Peña Nieto to meet Trump in person… Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner led the effort to secure a meeting, the sources said. With receptive signals coming back from Mexico, Team Trump waited for the formal invitation they had set in motion.”

Mexican President Contradicts Trump

August 31, 2016 at 8:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump swept into Mexico City on a politically perilous mission to prove his mettle as a negotiator by facing a nation that he has repeatedly denigrated and has promised to compel to pay for a border wall,” the New York Times reports.

“But Mr. Trump’s efforts at diplomacy in a meeting with Mexico’s leader, Enrique Peña Nieto, quickly backfired: Mr. Trump said that the two men did not discuss financing for the wall, one of his signature immigration issues, while Mr. Pena Nieto said later on Twitter that at the start of their meeting, ‘I made it clear that Mexico will not pay for the wall.'”

Mexico Trip a Big Win for Trump

August 31, 2016 at 5:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump met in Mexico with President Enrique Peña Nieto, who is being criticized by many Mexicans for holding the meeting. In a subdued joint appearance before the press in Mexico City, the two men described the meeting as warm, despite significant disagreements on issues of trade and immigration,” the New York Times reports.

Byron York: “Indeed, it was a big win — a very big win — for Trump. Going into a meeting with the potential for disaster — who knew how Pena Nieto would receive the world’s most controversial presidential candidate or what embarrassments might lie ahead? — Trump came out of the meeting looking very much like a potential President of the United States. Standing beside the Mexican leader in front of a green-gray granite wall reminiscent of the United Nations, Trump presented the picture of a statesman.”

Mexicans Angry at President for Inviting Trump

August 31, 2016 at 3:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The surprise announcement that Donald Trump would visit Mexico on Wednesday triggered a deluge of negative reactions here, with many Mexicans criticizing their president for inviting a U.S. candidate who has vowed to seal the border with a wall and deport millions of immigrants,” the Washington Post reports.

“The meeting poses a great risk for Peña Nieto, a former governor and the most unpopular Mexican president in decades. In the best of times, Mexicans feel conflicted about their neighbors to the north. In Trump, many Mexicans see the embodiment of their worst gringo fears: an overbearing and insulting politician happy to trod all over the poorer neighbor to get his way.”

Is Trump Making a Mistake Going to Mexico?

August 31, 2016 at 9:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dan Drezner: “The question is why it is happening. As I’ll explain in a moment, there are so many ways this can go wrong that it boggles the mind. Remember Mitt Romney’s disastrous overseas trip in 2012? Scott Walker’s bumbling overseas trip in early 2015? Multiply that by a factor of 10 and that’s how badly this could go.”

U.S. Offer to Help Find ‘El Chapo’ Ignored by Mexico

July 14, 2015 at 1:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 38 Comments

“Hours after the world’s most infamous drug lord, Joaquín ‘Chapo’ Guzmán Loera, escaped Mexico’s highest security prison over the weekend, the United States offered everything it has — Marshals, drones, even a binational task force — to help find and recapture the kingpin,” the New York Times reports.

“But the Mexicans have kept the Americans at bay, without giving an answer on the extra help, according to Mexican and American officials, confounding law enforcement agencies on both sides of the border and undermining efforts to recapture Mr. Guzmán, the billionaire head of the Sinaloa Cartel, before his wealth and global connections help him disappear.”
