Trump Repaid Cohen for Stormy Daniels Agreement

May 2, 2018 at 9:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rudy Giuliani told Fox News that President Trump repaid his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, the $130,000 he used to secure an agreement with adult film star Stormy Daniels to stay silent about their extramarital affair.

Giuliani said the payment was “perfectly legal” and was “not campaign money,” meaning the arrangement didn’t violate campaign finance law.

He added: “He didn’t know about the specifics of it but he did know about the general arrangement, that Michael would take care of things like this.”

What Michael Cohen Did Before Meeting Trump

May 1, 2018 at 3:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rolling Stone: “A few years before he started working for Donald Trump, and long before he gave legal advice to people like Fox News personality Sean Hannity, Michael Cohen had a different kind of clientele. Cohen roamed the courthouses of New York City, filing lawsuits on behalf of people with little means who were seeking compensation for the injuries they suffered in car collisions. Many personal-injury lawyers make their living this way, but there was something striking about Cohen’s cases: Some of the crashes at issue didn’t appear to be accidents at all.”

“A Rolling Stone investigation found that Cohen represented numerous clients who were involved in deliberate, planned car crashes as part of an attempt to cheat insurance companies. Furthermore, investigations by insurers showed that several of Cohen’s clients were affiliated with insurance fraud rings that repeatedly staged ‘accidents.'”

May 1, 2018 at 6:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Michael Cohen, already under pressure from a federal criminal investigation into his business and financial dealings, has been hit this month with more than $185,000 in new state warrants for unpaid taxes on his taxicab companies,” Bloomberg reports.

“Added to his previous tab, that brings the total to $282,000 owed to New York state by 16 taxi medallion-holding companies owned by Cohen or members of his family, including Mad Dog Cab Corp., Smoochie Cab Corp., Golden Child Cab Corp. and N.Y. Futon Taxi Corp.”

Trump Campaign Is Paying Some of Cohen’s Legal Fees

April 30, 2018 at 2:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump campaign has spent nearly $228,000 to cover some of the legal expenses for President Trump’s personal attorney Michael Cohen, sources familiar with the payments tell ABC News, raising questions about whether the Trump campaign may have violated campaign finance laws.”

“Cohen has said that he did not have a formal role in the Trump campaign, and it is illegal to spend campaign funds for personal use.”

Will Michael Cohen Flip?

April 27, 2018 at 10:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “His decision could depend in part on whether he can readily shoulder the enormous legal fees required to fight a federal probe of this magnitude.”

“At first blush, Cohen looks like a pretty rich man. He drives a white Rolls Royce, sports a $50,000 watch and owns a fair amount of Manhattan real estate.”

“But just as his loyalty to Trump is coming under scrutiny, a more tenuous financial picture is emerging. A taxi business he and his wife built is deeply in debt and losing money daily, his commercial real estate is throwing off only modest income, and his legal and consulting work is on hold while he remains under investigation.”

Trump previously said he had no knowledge of the payment Cohen made as part of the agreement.

Life Since the FBI Raid

April 24, 2018 at 5:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Vanity Fair: “Things have been different since the raid. With no office to occupy, Cohen goes to the gym and restaurants. He watches television and meets with his lawyers. His e-mail signature still reads Michael D. Cohen, Esq., Personal Attorney to President Donald J. Trump. His moods oscillate along with the news cycle and the time of day…. There are moments when he is convinced that he is collateral damage in the Mueller probe and that he will beat this. There are times when he is overwhelmed by the mounting legal bills he already faces, and how they could balloon if he is indicted.”

Said one person close to Cohen: “He is really confused. He doesn’t know what they could charge him with, but he’s on the edge of his seat.”

“It’s a state that is not allowing him much sleep. According to a source familiar with the situation, Cohen broods at night, pacing in his hotel room, worrying about how his legal nightmare is impacting his family. He wonders if there are people within Trump’s orbit who might have wanted to see him go down.”

Flipping Cohen May Not Be That Easy

April 24, 2018 at 7:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Getting Michael Cohen to rat out President Donald Trump may not be as simple as it sounds. Although Trump’s detractors are rooting for Trump’s personal attorney to ‘flip’ on the president and cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller to escape a potentially harsh prison sentence, legal obstacles make it difficult for lawyers to expose their clients’ guarded secrets.”

“Even if Cohen is determined to break his confidences with Trump, legal ethics might deter federal prosecutors from coaxing him to betray his professional confidences with Trump, legal veterans and experts say.”

Judge Wants Cohen Response Before Ruling on Lawsuit

April 20, 2018 at 6:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal judge in California said that he needed to hear from Michael Cohen directly before deciding whether to issue a stay in a civil lawsuit involving porn star Stormy Daniels,” CNN reports.

The judge “gave Cohen’s attorney until Wednesday to file a declaration by Cohen himself indicating whether his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination could be at issue in the civil case due to an ongoing criminal investigation in New York.”

Trump Adviser Explains Why He Thinks Cohen Will Flip

April 19, 2018 at 8:46 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Longtime Trump legal adviser Jay Goldberg told CNN that he’s thinks Michael Cohen will turn on President Trump and cooperate with federal prosecutors because he’s worried about getting raped in prison.

Said Goldberg: “He’s not suited to stand up to the rigors of jail life… Michael doesn’t see himself walking down Broadway while people are clamoring, ‘you’re going to be my wife.'”

Cohen Drops Libel Suit Against BuzzFeed

April 19, 2018 at 9:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Embattled attorney Michael Cohen has dropped a pair of much-touted libel suits against BuzzFeed and the private investigation firm Fusion GPS over publication of the so-called dossier detailing alleged ties between President Trump and Russia,” Politico reports.

“Cohen abandoned the suits late Wednesday as he continues to fight to recover documents and electronic files seized from his home, office and hotel room last week by federal authorities as part of what appears to be a broad criminal investigation into his conduct.”

Trump Warned Cohen Will Flip Quickly If Charged

April 18, 2018 at 7:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“One of President Trump’s longtime legal advisers said he warned the president in a phone call Friday that Michael Cohen, Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer and close friend, would turn against the president and cooperate with federal prosecutors if faced with criminal charges,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Mr. Trump made the call seeking advice from Jay Goldberg, who represented Mr. Trump in the 1990s and early 2000s. Mr. Goldberg said he cautioned the president not to trust Mr. Cohen. On a scale of 100 to 1, where 100 is fully protecting the president, Mr. Cohen ‘isn’t even a 1,’ he said he told Mr. Trump.”

“Mr. Goldberg said the volume of correspondence taken and the potential pressure the government can bring to bear on Mr. Cohen to testify puts the president in more potential peril from the Cohen matter than from Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.”

Trump ‘Deeply Rattled’ By FBI Raid on Cohen’s Office

April 18, 2018 at 9:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Trump was infuriated by the seizure of possibly sensitive correspondence involving work that Cohen — his close friend, consigliere and personal ‘fixer’ — was doing on his behalf and believed Mueller’s team was operating in bad faith.”

“Trump was so upset, in fact, that he had trouble concentrating on plans that were laid out for him that day by his national security team about potential options for targeted missile strikes on Syria… In recent days, Trump has grown increasingly agitated, railing against members of his beleaguered team.”
