Trump’s Fed Pick Underpaid Alimony for Years

May 2, 2019 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Stephen Moore, Donald Trump’s embattled pick for the Federal Reserve board of governors, has underpaid his ex-wife’s alimony bills for years, leaving her out of pocket by tens of thousands of dollars,” the Guardian reports.

“Moore has continued paying Allison Moore significantly less than required under their 2011 divorce settlement…. The underpayment persisted even after Moore was found in contempt of court in Virginia in 2012, and came close to having his home seized, after he failed to pay Allison Moore more than $300,000 he owed her at the time.”

Moore’s Long History of Dismissing Women

April 30, 2019 at 5:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Stephen Moore, President Trump’s pick to serve on the Federal Reserve Board, once dismissed the Violence Against Women Act as the ‘most objectionable pork’ in the 1994 crime bill, saying the money would better spent if Americans were forced to write checks to ‘radical feminist’ groups,” CNN reports.

“More recently, he’s wondered aloud whether women would concern themselves about gender parity once they start out-earning men and suggested that women shouldn’t curse in public.”

“It’s part of a 25-year track record of dismissing women and criticizing gender equality in print and in interviews with conservative outlets.”

Washington Post: GOP support for Stephen Moore falls apart.

Stephen Moore, who was nominated by President Trump to serve on the Federal Reserve Board, has written that women “should be banned from refereeing, announcing or beer vending at men’s college basketball games,” asking if there was any area in life “where men can take vacation from women,” CNN reports.

In one column for the National Review, Moore complained about his wife voting for Democrats: “Women are sooo malleable! No wonder there’s a gender gap.”

In another, he called it a “travesty” that “women now feel free to play with the men.”

Moore Called Trump’s Immigration Policy ‘Dangerous’

April 15, 2019 at 5:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump’s pick to serve on the Federal Reserve Stephen Moore once criticized Trump’s positions on immigration, describing them as “extreme nativist” and calling them “crazy” and “dangerous,” CNN reports.

Moore made the comments in an August 2015 radio interview with Larry Kudlow, who now serves as the President’s top economic adviser.

In that interview, Kudlow compared Trump’s immigration plans to the worst parts of World War II — in an apparent reference to the Holocaust — and said Trump’s only real supporters came from “the nativist fringe.”

Trump’s Most Dangerous Pick So Far

March 26, 2019 at 8:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Catherine Rampell: “President Trump has made a lot of ill-advised nominations. But perhaps no single choice could inflict more long-term damage than the one he announced Friday: Stephen Moore, Trump’s pick to join the Federal Reserve Board.”

“Moore’s many economic claims over the years have revealed him to be, shall we say, easily confused…”

“A newspaper banned him from its pages because of his struggles in getting basic statistics right. During the dozens of times I’ve debated him on TV, he has persistently misstated easily Google-able facts. These include whether the country is experiencing deflation, whether Canada’s tariffs are ‘twice as high as’ ours, and whether the Fed predicted that Trump would crash the stock market. (Nope, nope, and huh?)”

“Now, somehow, Moore has been nominated to the Fed.”

Meanwhile, the Washington Post notes Moore edged closer to the Fed seat “as key GOP lawmakers express support.”

Greg Mankiw, an economics professor at Harvard who served as an adviser to both George W. Bush and Mitt Romney, writes that senators should “do their job” and ensure Stephen Moore is not confirmed as a Fed governor.

Said Mankiw: “Steve is a perfectly amiable guy, but he does not have the intellectual gravitas for this important job. It is time for Senators to do their job. Mr. Moore should not be confirmed.”

Trump Names Stephen Moore to Fed Board

March 22, 2019 at 12:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump announced that he planned to nominate 2016 campaign adviser Stephen Moore to the Federal Reserve board, the AP reports.

Moore wrote a book called Trumponomics and is a vocal critic of Fed chairman Jerome Powell.

Jonathan Chait: “Moore’s primary area of pseudo-expertise — he is not an economist — is fiscal policy. He is a dedicated advocate of supply-side economics, relentlessly promoting his fanatical hatred of redistribution and belief that lower taxes for the rich can and will unleash wondrous prosperity. Like nearly all supply-siders, he has clung to this dogma in the face of repeated, spectacular failures.”
