Jimmy McMillan is back and running for mayor of New York City. And he’s got a rap video to kick off his campaign.
Weiner Promises Decision Soon
Anthony Weiner “ended his slow-and-steady approach to media appearances today, granting at least four on-camera interviews with ABC7, NBC 4, CBS and RNN-TV. Despite flooding the airwaves, the former congressman insisted he has yet to decide whether he’ll ultimately make a high-profile mayoral bid this year. However, he did vow to make the decision in the near future,” Politicker reports.
Said Weiner: “In political terms, it’s as Yogi Berra would say, ‘It’s getting late early.’ I’ve going to decide soon. It’s going to be a matter of days or weeks. It can’t be a matter of months, that’s for sure.”
He also admitted “that there could still be more embarrassing photos of himself out there.”
Sanford Changes Story on Trespassing Charge
Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R), “who previously has said he was in his ex-wife’s home Feb.
3 because he didn’t want his youngest son to watch the Super Bowl
alone, said Tuesday for the first time that a second son was at the
home, too,” The State reports.
Christie Headed for a Landslide
A new Quinnipiac poll in New Jersey finds Gov. Chris Christie (R) is the overwhelming favorite to win re-election in the state’s gubernatorial race and leads Barbara Buono (D) by 58% to 26%.
Sanford’s Campaign Banner Looks Like the Argentine Flag
BuzzFeed notes former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford’ (R) campaign banner for his special election bid is the same colors as the Argentine flag, the country of his mistress-turned-girlfriend.
Bolling Regrets Dropping Out So Soon
Virginia Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling told the Richmond Times Dispatch the “political ups and downs” of the Ken Cuccinelli (R) and Terry McAuliffe (D) campaigns in the five weeks since he announced his decision not to run for governor as an independent have given him second thoughts.
Said Bolling: “If I have one regret about the decision it’s that I wish I had waited longer. Because if I had waited longer I think we may have (seen) the direction these campaigns were going and that may have made it easier to raise more money.”
Sanford Trails by Nine Points
A new Public Policy Polling survey in South Carolina’s 1st congressional district finds Elizabeth Colbert Busch (D) leading Mark Sanford (R), 50% to 41%.
Weiner is Back on Twitter
Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, “who infamously sent lewd photos from his @RepWeiner Twitter account two years ago-ultimately leading to his resignation-has signed back up on the social media service. He’s now under the handle @AnthonyWeiner,” the New York Observer reports.
Garcetti Holds Commanding Lead for Los Angeles Mayor
A new USC Price/Los Angeles Times poll finds Eric Garcetti has opened a commanding 10-point lead in the Los Angeles mayor’s race over rival Wendy Greuel, 50% to 40%.
The poll suggests Greuel’s “dogged fight to win the backing of public employee unions appears to be undercutting her on her home turf in the San Fernando Valley… The survey also found no sign of success for Greuel’s effort to gain an edge among women by highlighting her potential to make history as the city’s first female mayor. Women preferred Garcetti, 50% to 41%.”
Markey Continues to Lead Lynch in Massachusetts
A new Western New England University poll in Massachusetts finds that Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA) leads Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA) in a Democratic Senate primary, 44% to 34%.
On the GOP side, Gabriel Gomez (R) is slightly ahead of Michael Sullivan (R), 33% to 27%.
Also interesting: “In hypothetical match-ups for the general election, both Democrats fare better than their Republican counterparts, although the numbers indicate Lynch is more likely to defeat any GOP Senate hopefuls.”
What’s not clear is how accurate a poll conducted in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings will prove in the end.
Another Poll Has Weiner in Second
A new Quinnipiac poll in New York City finds Christine Quinn (D) leading the Democratic primary pack at 28%, followed by Anthony Weiner at 15%, Bill de Blasio at 11% and Bill Thompson at 10%.
Sanford Could Still Win
Despite a very bad day for former Gov. Mark Sanford (R) yesterday — including the NRCC pulling the plug on financial support of his special election campaign — John Avlon says he may still pull off a victory.
“What we have here is a competitive congressional race in a district that hasn’t elected a Democrat to Congress since the early years of the Reagan era. That itself is invigorating, and Colbert Busch has already proved herself a capable, engaging candidate with a will to win. But even without the NRCC, counting Sanford out is a sucker’s bet. Win or lose, he’ll be due in court to answer the charges May 7–either as the incoming congressman or on the heels of his first electoral defeat.”
The Cook Political Report calls the race a Toss Up.
How Jenny Sanford Sabotaged Mark’s Comeback
Jason Zengerle: “Indeed, while Jenny has never come out and publicly opposed Mark’s congressional candidacy — choosing to remain officially neutral — she’s waged a brutally effective passive-aggressive campaign against it. Whether it was revealing to me that Mark had shamelessly asked her to manage his election bid; or telling the Washington Post that, until the night Mark’s fiancée showed up onstage at his victory party in April, one of her sons had never met the woman; or just generally making it known that she is furious that he’s running, Jenny has done a masterful job of keeping her ex-husband’s past (and not-so-past) transgressions in the news. She has seeded the ground with political land mines, stood back, and waited for Mark to step on one.”
Sanford Accused of Violating Divorce Terms Before
In addition to a trespassing complaint, Jenny Sanford has accused former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) of shirking their divorce agreement on at least three other occasions, the Washington Post reports.
“She filed a complaint against him in March 2012 for violating the terms of having their sons on the Sanford family’s Coosaw plantation. The terms state that ‘no airplanes will be flown at the children.’ She has also accused him of failing to properly insure the property and of missing a child support payment.”
Sanford Sons Met His Girlfriend at Victory Party
The Washington Post has learned that tensions within former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford’s (R) family “flared up as recently as April 2, at the celebration of Sanford’s runoff election victory when the former governor thrust two of his sons on-stage with the Argentine woman who was at the center of the spectacular sex scandal that broke up his marriage.”
It was the first time Sanford’s teenage son Bolton he had ever been in the presence of Maria Belen Chapur.
Jenny Sanford confirmed: “That was indeed Bolton’s first intro and both boys were quite upset and visibly so.”
Republicans Pull Plug on Sanford
National Republicans “are pulling the plug on Mark Sanford’s suddenly besieged congressional campaign,” Politico reports, “a potentially fatal blow” to his campaign against Elizabeth Colbert Busch (D).
“Blindsided by news that Sanford’s ex-wife has accused him of trespassing and concluding he has no plausible path to victory, the National Republican Congressional Committee has decided not to spend more money on Sanford’s behalf ahead of the May 7 special election.”
The Week: Is Sanford sunk?
Sanford Complaint Documents
A Political Wire reader in South Carolina forwards the leaked documents that show former Gov. Mark Sanford (R) was ordered to explain why he should not be held “in contempt of court” at a hearing two days after the special congressional election.
The complaint refers to a “pattern of entering” his ex-wife’s house. Sanford has only admitted to doing so once to watch a football game with his son.
Sanford Explains Trespassing Charges
Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) issued a statement explaining the trespassing charges against him:
“It’s an unfortunate reality that divorced couples sometimes have disagreements that spill over into family court. I did indeed watch the second half of the Super Bowl at the beach house with our 14 year old son because as a father I didn’t think he should watch it alone. Given she was out of town I tried to reach her beforehand to tell her of the situation that had arisen, and met her at the back steps under the light of my cell phone when she returned and told her what had happened.”
“There is always another side to every story, and while I am particularly curious how records that were sealed to avoid the boys dealing with embarrassment are now somehow exposed less than three weeks before this election, I agree with Jenny that the media is no place to debate what is ultimately a family court matter, and out of respect for Jenny and the boys, I’m not going to have any further comment at this time.”
