GOP Fight to Replace Trump Has Already Started

February 28, 2020 at 6:40 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “They’re visiting early primary states, reaching out to major donors, and — in one instance — even running commercials in Iowa. But perhaps the most overt display of ambition is on display this week here at the Conservative Political Action Conference, a rite of passage for White House aspirants eager to audition before thousands of activists whose support can be critical down the line.”

“Those with the most prominent speaking roles — a list that includes the likes of Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz — are regarded as likely 2024 contenders. At Wednesday evening’s opening reception, former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley was mobbed by fans, including a woman who wore a ‘Nikki 2024’ baseball cap. Haley took a picture with the woman and signed the hat.”

Abrams Already Laying Groundwork for Presidential Bid

February 24, 2020 at 10:02 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Stacey Abrams has her sights set on the White House, and the former minority leader of the Georgia House of Representatives is already laying the groundwork for a future campaign,” McClatchy reports.

Said Abrams: “I will run for president when it’s appropriate, and I don’t know when that is.”

“Between now and the 2024 presidential election much could change for Abrams, 46, and on the political landscape. She has been seen as a potential running mate for the 2020 Democratic presidential nominee for nearly as long as there has been a campaign. She has also signaled that she could challenge Kemp again for the governor’s mansion in 2022.”

Yang Already Talking About Running Again In 2024

February 7, 2020 at 5:38 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Andrew Yang made several comments during a recent call with campaign staffers that strongly suggest he’s thinking about running for president again in four years if his long-shot 2020 White House bid falls short,” Rolling Stone reports.

Said Yang: “Every bit of good we do in the state of New Hampshire gives us a chance to make history right now on Tuesday, but it also enables us to build a following and support base for the ideas that energize this campaign and for the future.”

He went on: “Imagine a world where we put up a really great number on Tuesday, and then let’s say we decide to run this back again in four years. If you start with that base in New Hampshire, plus everything that we have the next time around, we’re going to be even better positioned to see the goals of this campaign through, eradicate poverty, improve the human condition, and help move this country we love forward in the right direction.”

2024 Buzz Begins for Josh Hawley

January 21, 2020 at 11:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It took Sen. Josh Hawley just two years to make the jump from state attorney general to U.S. senator. After only one year in Washington, there are signs that the Missouri Republican is preparing for another promotion,” the Kansas City Star reports.

“Hawley has established himself as a national brand within the GOP in ways that could serve as a prelude to a presidential run. He’s carved out a niche issue with his push to crack down on the tech industry and begun to articulate a foreign policy vision, which would shift the nation’s focus from the Middle East to China.”

“He’s become a fixture of cable news, a sought-after speaker for events hosted by high-profile conservative groups and has repeatedly generated national media attention with legislation that plays to the conservative base.”

If Trump Wins, Brace Yourself for Don Jr. In 2024

January 12, 2020 at 2:17 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rick Wilson: “Get ready for Donald Trump Jr., a man who speaks the fluent asshole dialogue of the own-the-libs Trump Party, to rise to the top of the 2024 GOP primary ranks. The dynastic talk that was once treated as a joke (even by me) is already growing around both Don Jr. and Ivanka. Poor Eric is left out, but then again, he always has been.”

“The Trump family—including the creepy automaton Jared Kushner—will continue to view the American government not as a sacred trust but as an ATM for their crapulous enterprises and nation-state-level grifting. While Kushner’s ambitions don’t appear to be especially political, his exploitation of his high office as Grand Vizier to Emir Donald has been spectacularly profitable for his companies. As for Trump personally, his hotels, golf courses, and clubs were miraculously both popular and profitable for unknown reasons. (Pardon me while I recover from that epic eye-roll.)”

McConnell Sells Pompeo on Senate Run

December 18, 2019 at 7:19 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“When Mitch McConnell pitches Mike Pompeo on running for the Senate in 2020, a periodic occurrence, the majority leader does not fail to mention that the chamber is a great steppingstone should the secretary of state harbor higher aspirations,” the Washington Examiner reports.

“Fearing former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach could win the Republican nomination to succeed retiring Sen. Pat Roberts and put an otherwise red seat in jeopardy, McConnell and other party insiders are desperate for Pompeo to run.”

Haley-Pence Rivalry Heats Up

August 24, 2019 at 7:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“When top Republicans convened at the St. Regis resort in Aspen, Colo. last month for an exclusive donor retreat, several attendees said there was palpable tension in the room as the gathering’s two headliners prepared to speak: Vice President Mike Pence and former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley,” Politico reports.

“The assembled group of governors, high-dollar donors, and operatives were well aware that the two have big ambitions; to some it seemed as if Pence and Haley, who spoke on back-to-back days, were vying for their attention. Some in the audience found themselves parsing and comparing the two speeches and buzzed they were getting a sneak preview of a 2024 Republican primary. Others recalled something peculiar: Neither Pence nor Haley acknowledged each other in their presentations, even though they gave shout-outs to others attending the retreat.”

What the Electoral Map Will Look Like In 2024

July 23, 2019 at 11:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Magazine: “So we have a pretty clear idea of which states will be winners and losers in congressional reapportionment, based on Census estimates and projections.”

“According to a late-December 2018 analysis from Election Data Services, Texas will pick up three House seats and Florida two; while Arizona, Colorado, Montana, North Carolina, and Oregon will gain one each. New York is projected to lose two seats, while Alabama, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and West Virginia are expected to lose one. California and Minnesota are thought to be on the bubble for possibly losing one seat.”

Here’s the 2024 map based on 2016 election results.

Hogan May Run for President In 2024

June 4, 2019 at 9:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) said that “he’s open to considering a presidential campaign in 2024, after his term ends — but ruled out running for the U.S. Senate,” the Baltimore Sun reports.

Said Hogan: “I’m not going to say I won’t run in the future. A lot of people are talking to me about 2024 being a possibility. We won one of the biggest victories in very tough state in a very tough year. People are keeping an eye on what we’re doing here. Are we going to be a bigger tent party or a smaller tent party? That could involve a future run but maybe it won’t.”
