Some Candidates Are Scrubbing Their Websites

September 30, 2026 · 5:49 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Political candidates often scrub certain topics from their websites after they win a primary election. Usually, they dial back more contentious positions they took during the primary and instead focus on issues with broader appeal. It’s a tradition as old as political websites themselves,” the Washington Post reports.

“But this year, a lot of attention has been paid to how Republicans have quietly been removing mentions of President Donald Trump and his movement from their campaign websites, given the president’s slumping approval rating.”

“Fuck her. That’s all I can say. And that statement has nothing to do with blind loyalty to Dems. It has everything to do with her being a narcissistic drama queen who has used her platform — such as it is — only to advance herself. Karma will suck.”

— Former Rep. Susan Wild (D-PA), quoted by Fox News, on former Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) not endorsing James Talarico (D) in the U.S. Senate race.

“Paxton has not yet agreed to the debate, and his campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.”

Jack Smith Hearing Flops for Republicans

September 29, 2026 · 5:51 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Politico: “Armed with subpoena power in Congress and a friendly Justice Department on their side, Republican lawmakers have spent two years promising to expose former special counsel Jack Smith as the leader of an anti-Trump witch hunt that morphed into a full-blown attempt to take down the Republican establishment.”

“Smith’s appearance Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee — his third time testifying under oath on Capitol Hill, the second time in public — was supposed to be a watershed moment for the GOP intent on extracting a smoking gun ahead of the midterm elections. Instead, the hearing was most memorable for the fusillade of insults hurled by the panel’s Republicans.”

Trump’s Campaign Schedule Is a Bad Sign for Republicans

September 29, 2026 · 5:20 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Ed Kilgore: “This very week, Trump is campaigning in Alabama, Oklahoma, and Ohio — states he carried by 30 percent, 34 percent and 11 percent just two years ago. Yes, there are vulnerable House seats in Alabama and Oklahoma, but that’s a sign of how deep a hole the GOP has dug for itself.”

“A trip to Ohio is arguably more justifiable; there are highly endangered but still winnable Senate and House races along with a close gubernatorial contest (featuring his occasional sidekick Vivek Ramaswamy). But time spent in any red state (including Iowa and Texas, where there are an extraordinary number of ‘fires’ scorching Republican candidates) is time denied in purple states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.”

“The 2026 midterms are to a very dangerous extent being fought on the home turf of the president’s party, leaving too much highly contested ground uncovered.”

A Republican Midterm Defeat Will Not Be an Earthquake

Ed Luce: “It is only a slight exaggeration to say that since Republican lawmakers do not have control of Congress, they cannot really lose it. Though Trump treats Congress like a Duma, sufficient handfuls of Republicans have joined Democrats to block some of his wishes. Foremost of these is a bill to impose draconian ID requirements on voters.”

“For the most part, however, Congress has been irrelevant in the last 20 months.”

A Kansas Democrat’s Red-State Pitch

September 29, 2026 · 2:04 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Adam Hamilton doesn’t plan to stay in Washington long if he gets there, and he doesn’t plan to spend his time investigating President Donald Trump,” MS NOW reports.

“The 62-year-old megachurch pastor, running a surprisingly competitive Senate campaign as a Democrat in Kansas, told MS NOW he would serve no more than two terms in the chamber if elected. He also said he had no interest in the investigations of Trump and his family that Democratic leaders have signaled they would pursue if their party wins control of Congress.”

Said Hamilton: “I’m not going to Washington to hold trials. I’m going to Washington to fight for the people of Kansas and make life better for them.”

Republicans Find a Migrant Caravan Just in Time

September 29, 2026 · 1:02 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“It’s almost the midterm elections, and you know what that means: a caravan of scary migrants is trekking toward the border, prepared to invade the nation with their foreign criminal ways — according to Donald Trump‘s administration and right-wing media, anyway,” Rolling Stone reports.

“With early voting set to begin in some states, and Election Day only a few weeks away, Republicans are using every tool in their arsenal to try to mitigate an electoral backlash to the president’s extremely unpopular first two years back in office. That means fear mongering about migration from South and Central America. But it’s hard not to notice that these supposed migrant caravans seem to only appear shortly before an election, and disappear from the right-wing media cycle immediately after votes are cast.”

“Right-wing accounts on social media began posting unverified videos of an alleged migrant caravan over the weekend.”

Democrats Face Tricky Votes Before Midterm Sprint

September 29, 2026 · 10:44 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Senate Democrats may be feeling pretty positive going into their final campaign sprint, but first they must deal with a handful of political headaches on the Hill,” Politico reports.

“Democrats at their weekly caucus lunch today will talk strategy on a number of measures that could split members who have stuck together on other recent high-profile votes.”

“Senate Democratic leaders expect a mostly unified caucus against a bill targeting data center costs and another restricting lawmaker’s stock trading, according to a leadership aide, who acknowledged it’s possible some members break ranks if it makes sense for them politically.”

“Vote counts on a third bill on violence in the West Bank are less clear.”

Democrats Might Actually Win the Senate

September 29, 2026 · 9:39 am ET · Leave a Comment

The Atlantic: “When this year began, the Democrats were heavy underdogs to take back the Senate in the midterms. The task would require not only toppling Susan Collins in Maine but also winning at least five states that voted for Donald Trump in 2024, while holding on to all of the party’s existing seats. The realistic best-case scenario seemed to be a replay of the so-called blue-wave 2018 election, during Trump’s first term, in which Democrats took back the House but the Senate remained in Republican hands. To gain control of the upper chamber, Democrats would need an incredible stroke of luck. They might have gotten one.”

“Trump’s decision to start a war with Iran, and the resulting spike in oil prices, shifted the boundaries of the politically possible.”
