Abortion No Longer Top Priority for Democrats

January 2, 2026 · 7:33 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Up to seven states will vote on abortion rights this year. But recent polling indicates that Democrats may not be able to count on the issue in their efforts to drive votes in the 2026 midterms, after making abortion rights the centerpiece of their pitch to voters in the elections that followed the fall of Roe v Wade,” The Guardian reports.

“Led by Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, antiabortion activists began to pressure Republicans during the fall government shutdown to further restrict abortion coverage from insurance plans made cheaper by ACA subsidies at the heart of the dispute.”

Miscarriage Becomes Life-Threatening After Abortion Bans

July 2, 2025 · 12:46 pm ET · Leave a Comment

ProPublica: “Before states banned abortion, one of the gravest outcomes of early miscarriage could easily be avoided: Doctors could offer a dilation and curettage procedure, which quickly empties the uterus and allows it to close, protecting against a life-threatening hemorrhage.”

“But because the procedures, known as D&Cs, are also used to end pregnancies, they have gotten tangled up in state legislation that restricts abortion.”

“Reports now abound of doctors hesitating to provide them and women who are bleeding heavily being discharged from emergency rooms without care, only to return in such dire condition that they need blood transfusions to survive.”

Republican’s Pregnancy Collided With Abortion Politics

June 22, 2025 · 4:55 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL) arrived at the emergency room in May 2024 terrified by what she had just learned: Her pregnancy could kill her at any moment,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“It would only get worse. The Florida Republican needed a shot of methotrexate to help expel her ectopic pregnancy, in which there is no way for the embryo to survive. Her state’s six-week abortion ban had just taken effect. She said doctors and nurses who saw her said they were worried about losing their licenses or going to jail if they gave her drugs to end her pregnancy.”

“She began arguing her case. The staff resisted, she said, even though doctors earlier that day estimated she was just five weeks pregnant. There was no heartbeat, and her life was at risk. She pulled up the state law on her phone for hospital workers to read. She said she called the governor’s office late at night for help, but no one picked up.”

“Hours later, doctors finally agreed to give her the methotrexate.”

There are currently 13 states — California, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Vermont and Washington state — with laws in the books that require insurers to cover abortion.”
