Gore Rips Trump for Trying to Bury Climate Report

November 23, 2018 · 8:27 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Al Gore blasted the White House, saying it was trying to “bury” a long-awaited government report on climate change by releasing it on the day after Thanksgiving, CBS News reports.

Said Gore: “Unbelievably deadly and tragic wildfires rage in the west, hurricanes batter our coasts — and the Trump administration chooses the Friday after Thanksgiving to try and bury this critical U.S. assessment of the climate crisis. The President may try to hide the truth, but his own scientists and experts have made it as stark and clear as possible.”

New Climate Report Warns of Dire Risks to U.S.

November 23, 2018 · 2:07 pm ET · Leave a Comment

The Trump administration released a major new climate science report on Friday, warning of “hundreds of billions of dollars” in annual losses to some economic sectors without scaled up actions to adapt to current changes and slash emissions to avoid future warming, Axios reports.

Washington Post: “The report’s authors, who represent numerous federal agencies, say they are more certain than ever that climate change poses a severe threat to Americans’ health and pocketbooks, as well as to the country’s infrastructure and natural resources. And while it avoids policy recommendations, the report’s sense of urgency and alarm stand in stark contrast to the lack of any apparent plan from President Trump to tackle the problems which, according to the government he runs, are increasingly dire.”

“The congressionally mandated document — the first of its kind issued during the Trump administration — details how climate-fueled disasters and other types of worrying changes are becoming more commonplace around the country and how much worse they could become in the absence of efforts to combat global warming.”

Zinke Blames ‘Environmental Radicals’ for Wildfires

November 20, 2018 · 11:55 am ET · Leave a Comment

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke blamed “environmental radicals” for the deadly wildfires in California, saying after he toured the damage from the Camp Fire that environmentalists stop forest management practices that could have prevented the fires, CBS News reports.

Said Zinke: “I will lay this on the foot of those environmental radicals that have prevented us from managing the forests for years. And you know what? This is on them.”

But he also added that “it’s not the time for finger-pointing” on the causes of the fires.

Trump Blames California Forest Policies for Wildfires

November 10, 2018 · 9:25 am ET · Leave a Comment

President Trump blamed “mismanagement” of California’s forests for ongoing deadly wildfires, threatening to withhold federal payments after multiple blazes killed 9 people and prompted evacuation orders for some 250,000 state residents, Politico reports.

Said Trump: “There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor. Billions of dollars are given each year, with so many lives lost, all because of gross mismanagement of the forests. Remedy now, or no more Fed payments!”

Supreme Court Won’t Block Climate Lawsuit

November 3, 2018 · 7:25 am ET · Leave a Comment

“The Supreme Court on Friday night refused to halt a novel lawsuit filed by young Americans that attempts to force the federal government to take action on climate change, turning down a request from the Trump administration to stop it before trial,” the Washington Post reports.

“The suit, filed in 2015 by 21 young people who argue that the failure of government leaders to combat climate change violates their constitutional right to a clean environment, is before a federal judge in Oregon. It had been delayed while the Supreme Court considered the emergency request from the government.”

Florida Governor Booed Out of Restaurant Over ‘Red Tide’

September 18, 2018 · 8:02 am ET · Leave a Comment

“With the noxious odor of red tide hanging in the air and a fresh wave of dead fish washing up on nearby Gulf beaches, a large crowd of people incensed about the devastating algae bloom that has plagued the region for months directed their anger at Gov. Rick Scott (R) during a campaign event,” the Sarasota Herald Tribune reports.

The protesters forced Scott “to enter the restaurant through the back door and leave the same way after just 10 minutes as members of the crowd shouted ‘coward.'”

“The Republican governor is on the defensive about his environmental record as he tries to unseat Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL). Protesters gathered Monday took aim at Scott for cutting funding for environmental agencies early in his first term, arguing Scott’s cost-cutting and deregulation have kept the state from implementing measures that could have helped minimize naturally occurring red tide blooms.”

Trump Makes It Easier to Release Methane Into Air

September 11, 2018 · 9:50 am ET · Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration, taking its third major step this year to roll back federal efforts to fight climate change, is preparing to make it significantly easier for energy companies to release methane into the atmosphere,” the New York Times reports.

“Methane, which is among the most powerful greenhouse gases, routinely leaks from oil and gas wells, and energy companies have long said that the rules requiring them to test for emissions were costly and burdensome.”

New EPA Pollution Rules Will Lead to More Deaths

August 21, 2018 · 10:18 am ET · Leave a Comment

The Trump administration “made public the details of its new pollution rules governing coal-burning power plants, and the fine print includes an acknowledgment that the plan would increase carbon emissions and lead to up to 1,400 premature deaths annually,” the New York Times reports.

“The proposal lays out several possible pathways that individual states might use for regulating coal-fired power plants, and what the consequences would be for pollution and human health in each case. In the scenario the E.P.A. has pegged as the most likely to occur, the health effects would be significant.”

“In that scenario, the Trump E.P.A. predicts its plan will see between 470 and 1,400 premature deaths annually by 2030 because of increased rates of microscopic airborne particulates known as PM 2.5, which are dangerous because of their link to heart and lung disease as well as their ability to trigger chronic problems like asthma and bronchitis.”

August 20, 2018 · 3:56 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“The $43,000 phone booth that former EPA administrator Scott Pruitt installed in his office may not have been worth all the headaches it caused him,” the Washington Post reports.

“He only placed one phone call to the White House, newly released records from the agency show. It lasted five minutes.”

“The Trump administration is proposing to dispose of federal land in Utah that was protected within the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument until its boundary was redrawn by the Interior Department earlier this year — despite Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke’s assurance last year that he would not sell public lands,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Zinke at his Senate confirmation hearing: “I am absolutely against transfer or sale of public land.”

Update: The Washington Post report Zinke backed off the plan.

Architects Newspaper: “One of the most dangerous construction-related carcinogens is now legally allowed back into U.S. manufacturing under a new rule by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). On June 1, the EPA authorized a ‘SNUR’ (Significant New Use Rule) which allows new products containing asbestos to be created on a case-by-case basis.”

“According to environmental advocates, this new rule gives chemical companies the upper hand in creating new uses for such harmful products in the United States.”

Trump Golf Resort Destroyed Special Nature Site

July 29, 2018 · 10:02 am ET · Leave a Comment

One of President Trump’s Scottish golf resorts has “partially destroyed” the special nature site on which it was built, the Observer reports.

“Normally the site’s conservation status would have prevented any significant development. But Trump said that, if he was refused permission to develop… he would withdraw from the entire scheme. He also claimed that, when completed, the land there would be ‘environmentally enhanced and better than it was before.’ The Trump Organization said last year its environmental approach to the course had been ‘first class'”

“The lawyer nominated to run the Superfund toxic cleanup program is steeped in the complexities of restoring polluted rivers and chemical dumps. He spent more than a decade on one of the nation’s most extensive cleanups, one involving Dow Chemical’s sprawling headquarters in Midland, Mich,” the New York Times reports.

“But while he led Dow’s legal strategy there, the chemical giant was accused by regulators, and in one case a Dow engineer, of submitting disputed data, misrepresenting scientific evidence and delaying cleanup, according to internal documents and court records as well as interviews with more than a dozen people involved in the project.”

Trump Officials Dismissed Benefits of National Monuments

July 23, 2018 · 2:56 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“In a quest to shrink national monuments last year, senior Interior Department officials dismissed evidence that these public lands boosted tourism and spurred archaeological discoveries, according to documents the department released this month and retracted a day later,” the Washington Post reports.

“The thousands of pages of email correspondence chart how Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke and his aides instead tailored their survey of protected sites to emphasize the value of logging, ranching, and energy development that would be unlocked if they were not designated as national monuments.”
