The Reload: “Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre told attendees at the gun-rights group’s most recent board meeting that the organization is down to 4.3 million members… That represents a downturn of more than a million members since allegations of financial impropriety were leveled against LaPierre and other members of NRA leadership in 2019.”

“The NRA is now smaller than it has been since 2012 when internal documents show the group had 4 million members.”

AR-15 Lapel Pin Is Perfect Symbol of Today’s GOP

February 7, 2023 · 11:04 am ET · Leave a Comment

Will Bunch comments on the AR-15 lapel pins being worn by many Republican members of Congress:

“Imagine members strutting around the corridors of Congress in late 2001 with a Boeing 747 lapel pin, or wearing a spiky replica of the coronavirus when New York City’s morgues were overflowing in the spring of 2020. Explain to me how worshiping an AR-15 — when the blood stains are still being scrubbed off a dance studio in Monterey Park, Club Q in Colorado Springs, or a bus in Charlottesville — is any different, really?”

GOP Lawmaker Hands Out Assault Weapon Lapel Pins

February 3, 2023 · 12:11 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Rep. Andrew S. Clyde (R-GA) admitted in a video that he “has been handing out lapel pins shaped like assault rifles to fellow GOP lawmakers,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Clyde: “I hear that this little pin that I’ve been giving out on the House floor has been triggering some of my Democratic colleagues. Well, I give it out to remind people of the Second Amendment of the Constitution and how important it is in preserving our liberties.”

“The assault-rifle pins have angered Democrats, who began noticing them in recent days before they knew of their origin.”

Why Biden Keeps Pushing for Assault Weapons Ban

January 27, 2023 · 8:26 am ET · Leave a Comment

Reuters: “Such a ban has little chance of passing the Republican-controlled House of Representatives or the Senate, which is narrowly controlled by Democrats, political experts say.”

“But Biden’s stubborn strategy continues: make a ban the focus of public discourse whenever a mass shooting occurs and put pressure on lawmakers who oppose one. The White House hopes to build on already strong public support for stricter gun safety laws overall, and ultimately try to pressure Republicans in Congress into changing their thinking.”

Supreme Court Lets New York Enforce Gun Law

January 11, 2023 · 10:14 am ET · Leave a Comment

“The Supreme Court is allowing New York to continue to enforce a sweeping new gun law banning guns from ‘sensitive places’ such as schools and playgrounds for now while a court challenge plays out,” the AP reports.

“The justices on Wednesday turned away a plea by the law’s challengers. The gun owners wanted the high court to lift a federal appeals court order that temporarily put on hold a lower court decision blocking portions of the law. The appeals court hasn’t finished its review of the case, and justices are often reluctant to weigh in under those circumstances. The justices could still consider the case and the law more generally in the future.”

When Guns Do the Talking

November 28, 2022 · 10:36 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Across the country, openly carrying a gun in public is no longer just an exercise in self-defense — increasingly it is a soapbox for elevating one’s voice and, just as often, quieting someone else’s,” the New York Times reports.

“This month, armed protesters appeared outside an elections center in Phoenix, hurling baseless accusations that the election for governor had been stolen from the Republican, Kari Lake. In October, Proud Boys with guns joined a rally in Nashville where conservative lawmakers spoke against transgender medical treatments for minors.”
