The Week Ahead

November 28, 2022 at 9:58 am EST By Peter Orvetti Leave a Comment

Turkey was for last week. This week, Congress digs in on a feast of lame duck.

The Senate is back Monday for action on the Respect for Marriage Act, which passed a test vote 62-37 before the break. It should pass by Thursday, codifying same-sex marriage protections into federal law. But while this landmark step, with bipartisan support, would have been unfathomable just two decades ago, it may be the easiest part of the lame duck session.

GOP Could Face Electoral College Backlash in 2024

November 27, 2022 at 4:18 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

For members: The new issue of Ballot Access News.

“Never in history has the electoral college damaged the Republican Party. In 1876, 1888, 2000, and 2016, the Democratic Party presidential nominee won the most popular votes but still lost the presidency.”

Trump Had a Very Bad Day in Court

November 22, 2022 at 5:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In just a few hours, Donald Trump lost at the Supreme Court and saw his lawyers face a very skeptical panel of judges on the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.

It must be hard for Trump to focus on his new presidential campaign.

Donald Trump Is a Loser

November 19, 2022 at 3:16 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

When Donald Trump entered the Republican presidential primary in 2015, he was mocked by Rupert Murdoch’s media empire, no major donors supported him and establishment Republicans wanted nothing to do with him.

That’s exactly how his entry into the 2024 presidential race was greeted.

A Few Thoughts for the End of the Week

November 18, 2022 at 9:36 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

I recently checked my spam folder and found more than 2,000 emails sent by a disgruntled reader over the last two years.

The reader claimed over and over that Political Wire‘s coverage was misleading and that a giant “red tsunami” was coming. He promised Republicans would rack up massive majorities and that I was ignoring the “correct” polls. He sent links to fringe websites to back up his claims.

Kevin McCarthy’s Raucous Caucus

November 17, 2022 at 4:15 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Here’s what Rep. Kevin McCarthy (D-CA) is about to find out: A simple majority and a governing majority are not the same thing.

That’s assuming McCarthy can even wrangle the 218 votes he needs to be elected Speaker on January 3 — not a sure thing at this point.

Democrats Very Much In Array

November 17, 2022 at 1:14 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Despite the lingering narrative of “Democrats in disarray,” it’s really just a myth.

Nancy Pelosi proved this again today when she stepped down as the Democratic leader.

Trump’s Authoritarian Campaign

November 16, 2022 at 10:35 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A low energy Donald Trump launched his 2024 presidential campaign last night.

Most people watching television probably missed it and even traditionally Trump-friendly media downplayed it, but it would be a mistake to ignore it. Trump made crystal clear that if he wins the presidency he intends to rule as an authoritarian.

Some Final Thoughts on the Midterm Results

November 14, 2022 at 5:35 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

There are still some uncalled races in this year’s midterm elections, but the broad outlines of what happened are pretty clear.

Here are a few observations:

Gerrymandering Likely Cost Democrats the House

November 14, 2022 at 11:08 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

It may take several more days to count the votes, but it appears that Republicans are on track to win 221 seats, just three more than needed for the majority in the House of Representatives.

As President Biden told reporters: “I think we’re going to get very close in the House. I think it’s going to be very close, but I don’t think we’re going to make it.”

Trump’s States Went Red, Biden’s Went Blue

November 14, 2022 at 10:46 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In an era of consecutive change elections, Bruce Mehlman notes the 2022 midterms were the “least-change-y change-election” since 2002.

Voters sought stability and many first-time Republicans challengers scared them more than the status quo.

Anger Over Abortion Rights Held Off the Red Wave

November 10, 2022 at 2:56 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

For months, polls suggested that abortion would take a back seat to concerns about inflation and the economy as the top issue for voters.

That proved to be very wrong.

Election Week Continues

November 10, 2022 at 11:51 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

It will take days — or even weeks — to learn which party will be in control of the House and Senate next year.

In the Senate, we’re waiting on Nevada and Arizona. Alaska will be longer due to ranked-choice voting. Georgia is going to a December 6 runoff.

Democrats May Get the Second Best Midterm Scenario

November 9, 2022 at 8:02 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The red wave that Republicans promised would repudiate Joe Biden’s presidency never materialized.

Republicans may still win control of the House and be able to block Biden’s legislative agenda and launch a flurry of investigations into his administration.

Don’t Be Surprised If Trump Turns on Kevin McCarthy

November 9, 2022 at 7:52 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

As I wrote last night, it’s very likely Republicans will control the House after the final races are called in the coming days. But the GOP’s margin will be very small, perhaps not much bigger than Democrats had for the last two years.

While it was tough to govern, Speaker Nancy Pelosi made it work. But Kevin McCarthy is no Nancy Pelosi.
