GOP on the Verge of Major Campaign Finance Win

August 29, 2023 at 9:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans have waged a decades-long battle to blow up the campaign-finance laws that rein in big-money spending. Now, they are making a play that could end in their biggest victory since the Citizens United ruling in 2010,” Politico reports.

“The GOP is growing increasingly optimistic about their prospects in a little-noticed lawsuit that would allow official party committees and candidates to coordinate freely by removing current spending restrictions. If successful, it would represent a seismic shift in how tens of millions of campaign dollars are spent and upend a well-established political ecosystem for TV advertising.”

A Government Shutdown Won’t Halt Trump’s Trials

August 29, 2023 at 9:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NBC News: “Trump’s indictments in New York and Georgia would not be affected, while his federal indictments — for allegedly mishandling classified documents and for his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection — are criminal matters that have been exempted from shutdowns in the past.”

“The Justice Department said in a 2021 memo that in a shutdown, ‘Criminal litigation will continue without interruption as an activity essential to the safety of human life and the protection of property.’ The Justice Department’s plans assume that the judicial branch remains fully operational, which it has said in the past can carry on for weeks in the event of a funding lapse.”

The Fourteenth Amendment Fantasy

August 29, 2023 at 9:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Frum: “The Fourteenth Amendment won’t save us from Donald Trump.”

“Eminent jurists are promising that it will. They argue that language in the Fourteenth Amendment, adopted after the Civil War, should debar the coup-plotting ex-president from appearing on a ballot for any office ever again. Their learning is undisputed. Their conclusions are another story.”

“The project to disqualify Trump from running for president is misguided and dangerous. It won’t work. If it somehow could work, it would create problems worse even than Americans already face. In an ideal world, Trump’s fellow Republicans would handle this matter by repudiating his crimes and rejecting his candidacy for their presidential nomination. Failing that—and it certainly seems as if that hope is failing—opponents of Trump must dig deep and beat him at the polls one more time. There is no cheat code to win this game.”

Trump’s Holding More of His 2020 Voters than Biden

August 29, 2023 at 9:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dan Pfeiffer: “The primary reason for the statistical tie in the race is that Trump is holding onto more of his 2020 vote than Biden. In the NYT poll, 91% of Trump’s 2020 voters are supporting him again while only 87% percent of Biden’s voters plan to vote for him in 2024. Among Biden’s 2020 voters, 2% plan to vote for Trump, 4% claim they won’t if the race is between Biden and Trump, and 5% intend to vote for a candidate other than Biden or Trump. Trump loses 2% to Biden, 3% to another candidate, and 2% say they won’t vote.”

“Relying on self-reported voter history can be a little noisy, but Biden’s approval rating demonstrates that he has some work to do with his own coalition. Only 77% percent of Democrats in the poll have a favorable opinion of Biden, compared to 80% of Republicans for Trump.”

“This may seem counterintuitive, but I find these numbers encouraging. Convincing people who already voted for Biden to vote for him again instead of sitting out the election or throwing their vote away on a third party candidate isn’t easy, but it is doable.”

Also interesting: “President Biden is in better shape politically than President Obama was at this juncture.”

An internal poll conducted for the Trump campaign finds Donald Trump leading the GOP primary race with 58%, followed by Ron DeSantis at 13%, Nikki Haley at 7% and Vivek Ramaswamy at 4%.

“Polls conducted at the behest of presidential campaigns are typically taken with a grain of salt compared to polls conducted independently, though it’s hardly alone in finding Trump with a massive lead.”

“Melania is busy with her son and family and she pays only so much attention to these issues which captivate the media. Of course these criminal charges are embarrassing to Melania and to Donald, but life goes on and each reacts to stress in different ways.”

Trump’s Trial May Become Center of the GOP Primary

August 29, 2023 at 6:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nate Cohn: “If the trial goes as scheduled and lasts ‘no longer’ than four to six weeks, as the government said in a filing, around two-thirds of the delegates to the Republican convention will be awarded during the trial of the party’s front-runner but, in all likelihood, before a verdict.”

“A March trial could easily become the center of gravity of the primary season — the fact that structures the opportunities available to Mr. Trump and his rivals. It could even start to affect the calculations of the candidates today.”

The Last Politician

August 29, 2023 at 6:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Out next week: The Last Politician: Inside Joe Biden’s White House and the Struggle for America’s Future by Franklin Foer.

Playbook: “In recent days Biden aides have been scrambling to secure a password-protected PDF of the book that has been sent to select journalists and reviewers, some of whom were required to sign nondisclosure agreements and promise not to share the contents with newsroom colleagues.”

“In the publishing world, The Last Politician is seen as a test of the market for political books about figures other than Donald Trump. In Washington, the book will be a test for how a generally leak-proof White House grapples with the first detailed excavation of its successes and failures from the Inaugural through the midterms.”

How Trump’s Election Lies Left the Michigan GOP Broken

August 29, 2023 at 6:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Michigan Republican Party is starving for cash. A group of prominent activists — including a former statewide candidate — was hit this month with felony charges connected to a bizarre plot to hijack election machines. And in the face of these troubles, suspicion and infighting have been running high. A recent state committee meeting led to a fistfight, a spinal injury and a pair of shattered dentures,” the New York Times reports.

“This turmoil is one measure of the way Donald Trump’s lies about the 2020 election have rippled through his party.”
