First Flight Leaves Under $1,000 Self-Deport Deal

May 19, 2025 at 2:50 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration’s first charter flight for dozens of ‘self-deporting’ immigrants took off from Houston early Monday, part of a new program offering them a free trip back home and $1,000 — or else,” Axios reports.

“The self-deportation flights are one of the few incentives for unauthorized immigrants to present themselves to authorities under President Trump’s immigration crackdown, which is long on sticks and short on carrots.”

Republican Leadership Is Banking on Trump

May 19, 2025 at 2:48 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Leadership plans to rely on one person to get the reconciliation bill over the line: President Donald Trump,” NOTUS reports.

“Currently, the House is nowhere close to passing Trump’s “One Big, Beautiful Bill.” There are moderates who don’t want Medicaid cuts and conservatives who want more Medicaid cuts. There are blue-state Republicans who want an increase in the state and local tax deduction and conservatives who don’t want an increase in SALT, just to name a few issues.”

“But Republican leadership is confident that Trump can do what he’s done in the past: make phone calls and twist arms until the bill passes.”

Trump-Putin Call Yields No Immediate Breakthrough

May 19, 2025 at 2:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump said he had an ‘excellent’ two-hour conversation by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin Monday, though the two failed to agree on an immediate cease-fire in Ukraine that has been pressed by the Trump administration and European allies,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“After their call, neither Trump nor Putin signaled that they had reached a breakthrough in the negotiations. Trump said that Ukraine and Russia will continue their conversations toward a cease-fire, and that the Vatican has offered to host negotiations. It’s unclear if the U.S. will remain as a broker in the peace process.”

NBC News: “While he said how well the call had gone, Putin also seemed to be avoiding any suggestion he’d budge from his position. He did not express any willingness to meet in person with Trump.”

Washington Post: Trump, Putin talk as Ukraine and Europe push for immediate ceasefire.

Trump Lacked Authority to Dismantle Institute of Peace

May 19, 2025 at 2:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hurry Up and Wait

May 19, 2025 at 1:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “House Republicans anticipate having attendance issues as the week drags on and the Memorial Day recess looms. So as soon as the GOP leadership has 217 votes for the reconciliation package, they’ll move to bring it up on the floor. The House Rules Committee is meeting at 1 a.m. on Wednesday to prepare the bill for floor consideration.”

“But here’s the other critical dynamic – Speaker Mike Johnson and his top lieutenants aren’t close to 217 votes yet. The bill is still very much a work in progress. Some of the most controversial elements of the package – Medicaid spending cuts, SALT and rolling back clean energy credits – are still being fought over by conservative hardliners and moderates inside the GOP conference.”

“On the one hand, Johnson wants to move fast. Faster is better and creates momentum to vote yes. But on the other hand, he’s nowhere close to reaching a consensus yet.”

Trump Fake Elector Case Sent Back to Grand Jury

May 19, 2025 at 1:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“An Arizona judge has ordered state prosecutors to send back to a grand jury a case in which Republicans were charged last year for their alleged roles in trying to overturn the 2020 election, potentially jeopardizing the high-profile indictments,” the Washington Post reports.

“Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Sam J. Myers sided with the Republicans and found that prosecutors failed to provide the grand jury with the text of an 1887 federal law that is central to the Republicans’ defense. The law, known as the Electoral Count Act, spells out how presidential electoral votes are to be cast and counted.”

The Legacy Joe Biden Won’t Get to Shape

May 19, 2025 at 1:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Presidential legacies are strange things. They rarely settle in real time. More often, they’re molded by events long after a president leaves office—sometimes decades later.

— Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-TX), quoted by NBC News, after the budget bill passed out of committee.

“He’s finished, done, gone. He polls terrible. People hate him. He’d go to Wisconsin thinking he can buy people’s votes, wear the cheese hat, act like a 9-year-old… It doesn’t work. It’s offensive to people.”

— An unnamed GOP operative, quoted by Politico, on Elon Musk.

Trump Threatens ABC News Over Qatar Jet Coverage

May 19, 2025 at 12:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump is threatening ABC News over its coverage of a luxury jet he is set to receive from Qatar, a decision that is drawing criticism from both congressional leaders and national security experts, The Hill reports.

Said Trump: “Now I see they are at it again, and I again give these SleazeBags fair warning. The wonderful country of Qatar, after agreeing to invest more than 1.4 Trillion Dollars in the United States of America, deserves much better than Misleading (Fake!) News. Everyone, including their lawyers, has been told that ABC must not say that Qatar is giving ME a FREE Boeing 747 Airplane, because they are not.”

He added: “Why doesn’t Chairman Bob Iger do something about ABC Fake News, especially since I just won $16,000,000 based on the Fake and Defamatory reporting of Liddle’ George Slopadopolus.”
