Press Restricted During Impeachment Trial

January 15, 2020 at 7:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Roll Call: “When the articles of impeachment are delivered to the Senate, a procession full of pomp and circumstance, just one video camera and no still photographers will be allowed to document the historic moment. No audio recording at all will be permitted, leaving radio reporters empty handed.”

“During the trial, a single press pen will be set up on the second floor of the Senate, where lawmakers enter and exit the chamber. Reporters will be confined to the pen, unable to move with senators. No movement will be allowed outside of the corrals and reporters and photographers will need to be escorted to and from the pen.”

My Reaction to the Seventh Democratic Debate

January 14, 2020 at 11:10 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

Despite the sharp attacks on each other in the media this week, neither Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders seemed inclined to lean into their differences during tonight’s debate. The reality is that they’re friends and ideological soul mates and there’s little to be gained electorally by attacking each other.

Michael Avenatti Arrested by Feds at California Hearing

January 14, 2020 at 10:28 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Michael Avenatti was led out of the State Bar Court in Los Angeles by federal agents on Tuesday evening, the Daily Beast reports.

“The arrest occurred outside the disciplinary hearing in which the State Bar of California has accused the hard-charging, tough-talking attorney of using a doctored document to scam a client out of nearly $840,000, funneling money from a lawsuit settlement fund to his own personal use.”

Trump and His Aides Focused for Now on Two Democrats

January 14, 2020 at 8:46 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s advisers see Sen. Bernie Sanders as their ideal Democratic opponent in November and have been doing what they can to elevate his profile and bolster his chances of winning the Iowa caucuses, according to Republicans familiar with the plans,” the New York Times reports.

“But their new focus on Mr. Sanders, independent of Vermont, comes at a time the president himself has been closely watching Michael Bloomberg, a late arrival to the Democratic primary race, unnerved by his campaign spending and his suggestion he might spend $1 billion of his own fortune on opposing Mr. Trump, even if he does not emerge as the nominee.”

“It has left the president and his campaign focused on two different candidates in the weeks before Democrats cast their first votes in Iowa — one, a populist running with a grass-roots movement behind him, and the other, a liberal billionaire who could refashion the general election because of his bottomless bank account.”

Ukrainian Ambassador Was Under Surveillance

January 14, 2020 at 8:45 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“New documents released by House Democrats on Tuesday offered fresh detail on the shadow diplomacy campaign at the center of President Trump’s impeachment, including text messages suggesting that the former United States ambassador to Ukraine was under surveillance while in Kyiv,” the New York Times reports.

“In a series of cryptic text messages, Lev Parnas, an associate of Rudolph W. Giuliani, the president’s personal lawyer, communicated with another man who appeared to be monitoring the movements of the ambassador, Marie L. Yovanovitch.”

Giuliani Crony’s Evidence to Be Used In Impeachment

January 14, 2020 at 6:04 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The House Intelligence Committee released new evidence related to the impeachment inquiry of President Trump, including information turned over by Lev Parnas, an indicted former associate of Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani,” Politico reports.

“The material also includes a previously undisclosed May 2019 letter from Giuliani to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. In the letter, Giuliani asked for a meeting with Zelensky as the former New York City mayor was pursuing investigations targeting former Vice President Joe Biden.”

“The transmission, which reflects the unfinished nature of the House’s impeachment inquiry, comes ahead of an expected House vote on Wednesday to formally send the impeachment articles to the Senate for a trial.”

Why Voters Are Nervous About Amy Klobuchar

January 14, 2020 at 5:30 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Michael Kruse: “What I heard from the voters I talked to was mounting angst and indecision. That Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are too far to the left. That Biden is too old. That Pete Buttigieg is too young. That Tom Steyer has too much money. I heard them yearn for a candidate who was just right, squarely in the middle, in the middle of the age range, and of the political spectrum, and of the country itself.”

“And I heard these voters, men and women, self-described moderates interested enough to at least come to watch Klobuchar, 59, praise her for her bipartisan bent and legislative success and the way she’s run this race, and then often stop short of pledging their full support. Almost every conversation I had eventually touched on her gender.”

Trump Looks to Reward Catholics

January 14, 2020 at 5:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Until Trump carried 52 percent of their votes in 2016, American Catholics supported the Democratic nominee in all but four presidential cycles since 1952. But after betting it all on the thrice-married Manhattan businessman — Trump won white Catholics by a 23-point margin, compared to Mitt Romney’s 19-point victory in 2012 — they never received so much as a ‘thank you’ from the 45th president.”

“If the 2020 election will be won or lost in the Rust Belt… the president can’t afford to have Catholics feeling left out… Inside the Trump campaign, preparations are underway for a “Catholics for Trump” coalition and a series of events that will get the president and his surrogates in front of friendly Catholic audiences.”

January 14, 2020 at 3:27 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Four Republicans have agreed to vote with Democrats in support of the measure, according to Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), who wrote the legislation that seeks to prevent President Trump from further escalating hostilities with Iran,” the Washington Post reports.

Bloomberg: “Worth noting amid recent developments that the administration is giving *another* briefing to senators tomorrow about the Soleimani strike. Kaine and others — Paul, Lee — have cited the treatment of senators at the briefing as a catalyst for action on war powers.”

Trump Tries to Script Impeachment for TV

January 14, 2020 at 3:02 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The biggest gamble now is the White House’s decision to put Pat Cipollone, the top attorney, out in front as the face of the president’s defense. While Cipollone is known as a well-respected litigator within conservative circles and a close ally of the president, his chops on TV remain unproven at best.”

Said a former administration official: “I do think we will see a lot of Pat Cipollone for the first time, and that is something everyone is anticipating. I don’t know how much TV Pat has done.”
