Taxes and Birtherism Aren’t Going Away

September 27, 2016 · 9:11 am ET · Leave a Comment

First Read: “Maybe the most damaging part of last night’s debate for Trump was that it only extended the tax and birtherism stories, which are bound to come up again at the VP and second presidential debate over the next two weeks. On taxes, not only did Trump suggest that he’d release his taxes if Clinton releases her emails (so it’s not the audit after all?), he also seemed to admit that he indeed pays no taxes.”

“And on birtherism — Trump’s longstanding charge that President Obama wasn’t born in the United States and thus potentially illegitimate to be president — he (falsely) accused Clinton’s ’08 campaign of starting the issue. He also said he brought it to an end after getting Obama to produce his birth certificate. But he never apologized or explained what changed his mind (from 2011-2016 to two weeks ago) that Obama was indeed born in the U.S.”

Reaction to the First Presidential Debate

September 26, 2016 · 10:40 pm ET · Leave a Comment

It was a much better debate than I expected.

Donald Trump held his own in the opening segment on trade policy. He was comfortable and spoke directly to his supporters. But as the evening continued, Hillary Clinton took the fight to Trump and kept him on the ropes.

Clinton was particularly effective when needling him on not releasing his tax returns, saying, “Why won’t he release his tax returns? Maybe he’s not as rich as he says he is.”

Trump couldn’t resist and in the resulting back-and-forth, he actually bragged about not paying his workers and not paying taxes. “It’s called business,” he repeatedly said.

On the substance of the debate, Clinton was the clear winner. She was controlled and methodical in making her case. Trump was constantly interrupting and spit out jumbled talking points that sounded like they came from some obscure corner of the Internet.

It wasn’t even close. Clinton crushed him.

Let’s face it: Anytime Trump has to defend questioning President Obama’s birthplace, it’s not going to be a good night for him. Trump’s answer was complete nonsense. Clinton was ready and called it “a racist lie.”

His lies continued while claiming to have opposed the Iraq war from the beginning. Although it won’t matter much, the fact checkers had a field day with Trump once again.

Towards the end of the debate, Trump claimed his “strongest asset” was his temperament. He did so while interrupting moderator Lester Holt and yelling at Clinton. It’s clear Trump doesn’t really know what “temperament” means.

In our polarized country, both candidates probably solidified their bases. But for those still undecided or those leaning towards a third party candidate, it should be clear that Clinton is the one better prepared for this moment.

How Cruz Came to Endorse Trump

September 24, 2016 · 8:16 am ET · Leave a Comment

Politico: “At the time of his convention speech, there was compelling political logic for the ambitious firebrand to steer clear of Trump. Cruz appears likely to run for president again, and Trump, at the time, looked like was headed toward a blowout loss. Not to mention, Trump had essentially called Cruz’s wife unattractive and erroneously linked his father to JFK’s assassination.”

“Cruz’s allies believed if he played it right, he could emerge from the election as one of the last principled conservatives — the final bulwark against a candidate who violated many of the values conservatives hold dear.”

“But with Trump approaching Hillary Clinton in the polls, Cruz’s diss had become more of a liability: A narrow Trump loss might have been pinned on Cruz for keeping conservatives home on Election Day because they were following his lead.”

No Fortune 100 CEOs Back Trump

“No chief executive at the nation’s 100 largest companies had donated to Republican Donald Trump’s presidential campaign through August, a sharp reversal from 2012, when nearly a third of the CEOs of Fortune 100 companies supported GOP nominee Mitt Romney,” the  Wall Street Journal reports.

Nearly Half Think Trump Would Detonate a Nuke

September 23, 2016 · 12:42 pm ET · Leave a Comment

A new SurveyMonkey poll finds that nearly half of all voters — 46 percent — think Donald Trump would use a nuclear weapon to attack ISIS or another foreign enemy.

Also interesting: “Sixty-five percent said that there would be race riots in major cities during a Trump administration, and 44 percent believe Trump would authorize internment camps for illegal immigrants.”

The English-Only Candidate

September 23, 2016 · 10:53 am ET · Leave a Comment

Politico: “With 46 days until the November elections, and as early voting begins in a handful of states, Trump is on the precipice of becoming the only major-party presidential candidate this century not to reach out to millions of American voters whose dominant, first or just preferred language is Spanish. Trump has not only failed to buy any Spanish-language television or radio ads, he so far has avoided even offering a translation of his website into Spanish, breaking with two decades of bipartisan tradition.”

“While the majority of Latino voters are English-speaking, Trump’s refusal to campaign in Spanish is a powerful symbol of how little heed Trump has paid to America’s shifting demographics. Latinos now make up about 10 percent of the national vote, with electorally potent concentrations in crucial battlegrounds such as Florida, Colorado, Nevada and even North Carolina.”

What’s Behind Trump’s Bizarre Ad Strategy?

September 22, 2016 · 7:09 am ET · Leave a Comment

“It’s seven weeks before Election Day, five days before the highly anticipated first debate, and Donald Trump’s television advertisements have all but vanished,” Politico reports.

“Trump’s ads last ran nearly a week ago in four battleground states: Florida, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Since then, the GOP presidential nominee has ceded the airwaves to Hillary Clinton — and is only poised to launch a limited, less-targeted ad campaign in the days before next week’s debate.”

Trump Calls for Wider Use of Stop-and-Frisk

September 21, 2016 · 9:58 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Donald Trump “called for the broad use of the contentious stop-and-frisk policing strategy in America’s cities, embracing an aggressive tactic whose legality has been challenged and whose enforcement has been abandoned in New York,” the New York Times reports.

“His support for the polarizing crime-fighting policy — which involves officers’ questioning and searching pedestrians — collides with his highly visible courtship of African-Americans, who have been disproportionately singled out by the tactic, data show. It also came as police shootings were once again drawing scrutiny and protest.”

Trump Lashes Out at Media Again

September 21, 2016 · 9:28 am ET · Leave a Comment

Rick Klein: “It took until almost 10:30 pm last night for the Trump campaign to put out its statement on the latest Washington Post revelations about the Trump Foundation. This one accused the Post of ‘inaccuracies and omissions’ and ‘wrong’ facts – and proceeded to enumerate precisely zero items from any of those categories. It’s response by bluster, on paper, replacing actual answers to valid questions. (The paper trail in the latest report – documenting personal business legal settlements covered by Trump’s charitable foundation – is particularly solid, and has not been refuted by anyone in and around Trump.) Tuesday night, Mike Pence applauded his running mate for answering media questions ‘just about every day.’ But a summer storyline has flipped as we head into fall: Trump hasn’t held a full-fledged news conference since July.”

“His campaign’s scorching attacks on media organizations who dig in on his business or personal dealings are designed to obfuscate, not illuminate. A campaign that’s focused on ‘Crooked Hillary’ is going to have a harder time making that case without a straighter posture.”

The Art of the Gaffe

September 21, 2016 · 8:34 am ET · Leave a Comment

Matt Latimer: “Time and again, Trump has survived what only a few years ago would have been considered career-ending gaffes… This defies all the rules of public life as we’ve come to understand them. For decades, a single spontaneous outburst (John Kerry’s ‘I was for it before I was against it’), a pompous proclamation (whatever Al Gore intended to say about his role in the Internet), a cuckoo pronouncement (George Romney’s claim to have been ‘brainwashed’ about the Vietnam War), or even an embarrassing misspelling (Dan Quayle’s infamous attempt to correctly write the word ‘potato’ on a blackboard), caused irreparable, often campaign-ending damage.”

“Trump has done all these things—some of them multiple times in the same day. The gaffe hasn’t destroyed Trump; it’s made him stronger. The reasons for this are instructive, and they will change the way politics is practiced forever.”

Clinton Prepares for Two Trumps at Debate

September 21, 2016 · 8:24 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Hillary Clinton is preparing for two different foes in Monday’s presidential debate: an on-message, disciplined Donald Trump and a freewheeling, more provocative Donald Trump,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The Democratic nominee has cleared her schedule on multiple days to test arguments and practice for her first 90-minute matchup with the GOP nominee. This week, she has convened a small group of top advisers to run through potential questions and help her anticipate an assortment of scenarios.”

“In contrast, Mr. Trump has played down the value of doing dry runs and warned of the perils of over-preparation.”

Trump Says African Americans Are ‘In the Worst Shape’

September 21, 2016 · 7:14 am ET · Leave a Comment

Donald Trump faced a swift backlash after declaring that African Americans are “in the worst shape they’ve ever been” during a campaign event in North Carolina, the Washington Post reports.

“The comments drew immediate criticism on social media from critics who accused him of failing to consider the United States’ history with slavery and North Carolina’s history with Jim Crow laws and segregation.”

Reid Says Trump Not As Rich As He Claims

September 20, 2016 · 12:52 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Seeking to shake up a tight presidential race, Harry Reid declared Tuesday on the Senate floor that Donald Trump is a ‘swindler’ who is ‘not as rich as he would have us believe’ — as the Nevada Democrat moved to reprise the 2012 strategy that saw him hammer Mitt Romney repeatedly over his tax returns,” Politico reports.

Said Reid: “He was born with an inheritance but lost his daddy’s wealth … that’s why Donald Trump won’t release his tax returns. That’s certainly one of the reasons, of course: He is not worth nearly as much as he claims to be. That’s a secret he doesn’t want anyone to know. He wants everyone to think he’s this big, rich, rich man.”

Trump Used Charity to Settle Lawsuits

September 20, 2016 · 10:33 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump spent more than a quarter-million dollars from his charitable foundation to settle lawsuits that involved the billionaire’s for-profit businesses,” the Washington Post reports.

“If the Internal Revenue Service were to find that Trump violated self-dealing rules, the agency could require him to pay penalty taxes or to reimburse the foundation for all the money it spent on his behalf. Trump is also facing scrutiny from the office of the New York attorney general, which is examining whether the foundation broke state charity laws.”

Trump Running Behind Where GOP Nominee Should Be

September 20, 2016 · 9:58 am ET · Leave a Comment

“An election forecast built by Vox and a team of political scientists projects that a generic Republican should win 50.9 percent of the two-party vote in 2016. But Donald Trump isn’t a generic Republican — and he is polling at 47.7 percent of the two-party vote, according to the Huffington Post Pollster. The difference between those numbers — 3.2 points, as of today — is what we’re calling the Trump Tax: the electoral penalty Republicans appear to be paying for nominating Trump.”

“What we appear to be seeing is a remarkable example of a major political party blowing a totally winnable national election.”
