Stephen Colbert: “You don’t get to flog this issue for five years and then act like you’re correcting everybody else! We’re not crazy, we were there. We all saw you do it. Even the people who support you saw you do it, it’s why they support you!”

What Just Happened?
Quote of the Day
“Lester is a professional, but we’ll see what happens … By the way, Lester is a Democrat. It’s a phony system. They are all Democrats. It’s a very unfair system. I’ve worked pretty well within the system.”
— Donald Trump, in a Fox News interview, on debate moderator Lester Holt.
Scarborough Tries to Repair Relations with Trump
Last week, Joe Scarborough and his “Morning Joe” co-host, Mika Brzezinski, visited Donald Trump at Trump Tower to rekindle a once-rosy relationship that has turned bitter and adversarial, sources with knowledge of the meeting told CNNMoney.
The three also discussed the possibility of conducting an interview for “Morning Joe,” though nothing was decided or finalized.
Trump Suggests Arresting Magazine Publishers
Donald Trump took aim at “magazines” and other media that publish instructions on how to make explosive devices, CNN reports.
Said Trump: “So I see the other day, and they’re all talking about it so wonderfully because it’s called freedom of the press — where you buy magazines and they tell you how to make the same bombs that you saw. I would — now people will go crazy, they’ll say Trump is against freedom of the press. I’m totally in favor of freedom of the press. But how do you allow magazines to be sold — these are magazines that tell you, from step one, go to the store and buy such-and-such, right?”
He added: “Those people should be arrested because they are inciting violence, OK.”
Trump Shatters GOP Records with Small Donors
Politico: “Trump is approaching, and has possibly already passed, $100 million from donors who have given less than $200, according to an analysis of available Federal Election Commission filings, the campaign’s public statements and people familiar with his fundraising operation. It is a threshold no previous Republican has ever achieved in a single campaign. And Trump has done so less than three months after signing his first email solicitation for donors on June 21 — a staggering speed to collect such a vast sum.”
Said one GOP operative: “I’ve never seen anything like this. He’s the Republican Obama in terms of online fundraising.”
“Clinton counted 2.3 million donors as of the end of August, the result of decades of campaigning, a previous presidential bid and allies who painstakingly built her an email file of supporters even before she formally announced her second run. But Trump had zoomed to 2.1 million donors in the last three months alone, his campaign has said.”
Exchange of the Day
Donald Trump was interviewed by Steve Doocy on Fox & Friends: about the bombing in New York City over the weekend:
DOOCY: Change the playbook. OK, change the playbook how?
TRUMP: Well we’re going to have to do something extremely tough over there.
DOOCY: Like what?
TRUMP: Over there. Like, knock the hell out of them. And we have to get everybody together and we have to lead for a change because we’re not knocking them, we’re hitting them every once in a while, we’re hitting them in certain places, we’re being very gentle about it, we’re going to have to be very tough.
Trump Campaign Spooked by Charity Probe
“Those in Donald Trump’s orbit appear to be nervous about the swirling scandal around the Trump Foundation—and they should be: the stakes are incredibly high,” the Daily Beast reports.
“The allegations of a quid pro quo between Trump and Florida Attorney General, improper use of the charity for personal benefit, and employment of the charity for political purposes have serious penalties beyond mere campaign optics—the possible consequences range from hefty fines to jail time.”
Could a Terror Attack Help Elect Trump?
John Avlon: “Though he’s a uniquely unqualified candidate, I’ve been concerned about an outside X-Factor event suddenly changing the emotional calculus of the electorate in ways that we would later regret. This could be a sudden economic collapse or a cyber October-surprise. But terrorism has always seemed the prime known-unknown.”
“After all, terrorism is now a depressingly regular feature of American life. While no attacks have rivaled 9/11, we saw at least 45 thwarted terror plots in the first ten years after the destruction of the World Trade Center and in the last year alone suffered horrific losses in the San Bernardino and Orlando slaughters. But we have no template for the impact of an attack just before an American election.”
Trump Push Left on Key Women’s Issues
“Over the past week, Donald Trump has staked out positions on women’s issues that tack far to the left of his party and his running mate, a marked shift from Republican orthodoxy and the presidential nominee’s past comments about mothers in the workplace,” the Washington Post reports.
“Trump, who has made inflammatory statements about women in the past and is lagging far behind in polls of female voters, released a plan to guarantee new mothers six weeks of paid leave and offer tax credits for child care. Trump also said that women should be able to access birth control over the counter, a direct contradiction of the platform his party adopted at its July convention.”
Clinton Denounces ‘Hateful Nonsense’ Thrown at Obama
Hillary Clinton answered her opponent’s admission that Barack Obama was born in the United States with an ardent tribute to the president as a leader and a man of “class, grace, and integrity,” BuzzFeed reports.
Clinton did not refer to Donald Trump by name, but addressed Obama directly before an audience of thousands here in the Washington Convention Center, calling him “one of the best presidents our country has ever had,” even in the face of what she described as “hateful nonsense.”
She added: “I know I speak for not just everyone in this room, but so many tens of millions of Americans: Mr. President, not only do we know you are an America, you’re a great American. And you make us all proud to be Americans, too.”

Trump Says Gates Likely ‘Has a Problem’
Donald Trump launched a series of fierce attacks against former Defense Secretary Robert Gates after the former defense secretary wrote an op-ed critical of him, the Washington Post reports.
Said Trump: “He’s a nasty guy. Probably has a problem that we don’t know about.”
Cuban Offers $10 Million If Trump Can Explain Policies
After Donald Trump said Mark Cuban “is not smart enough to understand what we are doing,” Cuban challenged Trump to a four-hour interview concerning the candidate’s “policies and their substance,” offering to donate $10 million to a charity of Trump’s choosing if he accepted, the Huffington Post reports.
Cuban even said that Trump could keep the money: “If you need it, I’ll write you the check and you can keep the money rather than give it to charity.”
A $1 Trillion Lie
New York Times: “A few hours after Donald J. Trump publicly backed away from a $1 trillion tax cut for small businesses, campaign aides on Thursday privately assured a leading small-business group that Mr. Trump in fact remained committed to the proposal — winning the group’s endorsement.”
“The campaign then told the Tax Foundation, a conservative-leaning Washington think tank it asked to price the plan, that Mr. Trump had indeed decided to eliminate the tax cut.”
“Call it the trillion-dollar lie: Both assertions cannot be true.”
Quote of the Day
“We got played again.”
— CNN’s John King, after Donald Trump staged another media spectacle before announcing he agreed that President Obama was in fact born in the United States.
Trump Suggests Clinton Bodyguards Disarm
Donald Trump “once again raised the specter of violence against Hillary Clinton, suggesting Friday that the Secret Service agents who guard her voluntarily disarm to ‘see what happens to her’ without their protection, the New York Times reports.
Said Trump: “I think that her bodyguards should drop all weapons. I think they should disarm. Immediately.”
He went on: “Let’s see what happens to her. Take their guns away, O.K. It’ll be very dangerous.”
Why Did Trump Stick to a Birther Lie?
New York Times: “The essential question — Why promote a lie? — may be unanswerable. Was it sport? Was it his lifelong quest to court media attention? Was it racism? Was it the cynical start of his eventual campaign for president?”
“It might not matter. He kept doing it, even as his most senior aides assured the public that he had long since abandoned the fallacy.”
“He had not. He was disingenuous until the very end, telling a Washington Post reporter just 72 hours before that he was unready to concede the president’s place of birth. But he treated the weighty topic, as he does so much else, like a television cliffhanger, promising a major declaration on Friday.”
Washington Post: Trump’s stance on display: Never wrong, and never loved more by his supporters.
Going Birther Again Makes No Sense for Trump
First Read: “The only way Trump addressing the Birther story makes sense is through the logic that ‘any day the campaign is about you is a good day.’ Besides that, addressing it doesn’t make sense. Either he doubles down on his past statements, which only complicates the campaign trying to woo African Americans and to seize on the ‘Deplorables’ controversy. Or he repudiates his past Birther statements, which raises the question if he has a political core. How can you beat the Birther drums for five years and then say you’re sorry 50-plus days before an election? If so, what does he believe? And what is he for?”
“One other point here: With his poll numbers improving, Trump appears to be getting a little cocky (this, Dr. Oz, criticizing the African-American pastor). As we know, Hillary Clinton can sometimes be a terrible frontrunner. Maybe Trump isn’t a good one as well.”
Rick Klein: “What matters in Donald Trump going birther again isn’t his current stance – even if one could be established as consistent, final, and coming from the candidate himself. What matters isn’t – or isn’t only – his long history with the matter, from bringing President Obama’s birth status to the public eye (that wasn’t Hillary Clinton’s doing) to his unsubstantiated claim to have sent private investigators to Hawaii. What matters is how he is still talking about it, and the obvious inferences as to why. It’s a blunt appeal to Obama hatred, including those for whom race is part of the reason to hate. Perhaps just as critically, it’s another Trump distraction – putting himself at the center of attention, and taking scrutiny away from other corners. Trump has used distraction and deflection as tools throughout the campaign. Again, he’s where he wants to be – the focus of frenzy he will surely call a media obsession.”
Undecided Voters Are Breaking To Trump
Sam Wang: “The narrowing of the race seems to be driven by a break in undecided voters toward Trump. Since early August, Donald Trump has gained about 4.0 percentage points, and is nearing his previous highs for the year. During the same period, undecided voters have decreased by a similar amount.”
“Until now, undecided voters have been running about 4 points ahead of where they were in 2012. Many of those undecideds were probably disaffected Republicans unwilling to support Trump, a radical candidate unlike any that the U.S. has seen in over 100 years. Trump is not saying a lot relative to his usual inflammatory and divisive statements. It appears that this approach is bringing home the Republican base – and increasing his favorability rating.”
