Clinton Follows Nixon’s Strategy of Laying Low

February 20, 2015 · 10:33 am ET · 38 Comments

CNN: “As Clinton eyes another run at the presidency in 2016, some close to her — especially those who are cheering reports she may wait until summer to officially announce a bid — point to Nixon’s successful 1968 presidential bid as a positive sign, particularly how Nixon’s public operation went dark for about six months before entering the race.”

“Despite being the presumed Democratic front-runner since Obama was reelected in 2012, Clinton has been largely absent from the public spotlight since the midterms wrapped in November 2014. And with the exception of the occasional paid speech and non-profit event, she could lay-low through the spring, a months-long hiatus similar to one Nixon took more than fifty years ago before winning the presidency for the first time.”

Clinton Foundation Becomes an Issue for Hillary

February 20, 2015 · 6:14 am ET · 11 Comments

Wall Street Journal: “As Mrs. Clinton prepares to embark on a race for the presidency, she has a web of connections to big corporations unique in American politics—ties forged both as secretary of state and by her family’s charitable interests. Those relationships are emerging as an issue for Mrs. Clinton’s expected presidential campaign as income disparity and other populist themes gain early attention.”

Why Bush Might Not Be Best Against Clinton

February 19, 2015 · 9:46 am ET · 90 Comments

Philip Klein: “In a general election, nominating Bush would neutralize one of Hillary Clinton’s biggest liabilities (the idea that she, too, is a figure from the past trying to ride her last name to power). Instead of having the clear contrast that would be possible if Republicans were to name a fresh candidate, the 2016 election would devolve into a proxy battle over whether Americans want to restore the Bush or Clinton presidencies. Whether the GOP likes it or not, that isn’t a matchup that favors Republicans.”

Clinton Foundation Begins Taking Foreign Gifts Again

February 18, 2015 · 7:05 am ET · 12 Comments

“The Clinton Foundation has dropped its self-imposed ban on collecting funds from foreign governments and is winning contributions at an accelerating rate, raising ethical questions as Hillary Clinton ramps up her expected bid for the presidency,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Recent donors include the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Australia, Germany and a Canadian government agency promoting the Keystone XL pipeline.”

Not Much Room to Clinton’s Left

February 17, 2015 · 12:54 pm ET · 13 Comments

Derek Willis: “The field of potential Democratic presidential candidates is ideologically cohesive. While there is room to the left of Mrs. Clinton’s Crowdpac score of -6.4, there is not a lot. The lack of distance between the Democratic hopefuls suggests that creating a wedge between someone like Ms. Warren and Mrs. Clinton would be harder among Democratic donors, and perhaps among the broader primary electorate.”

“The situation is different for Republicans, with considerable space available to the right of Jeb Bush (4.2) — and a lot of candidates to vie for it.”

Hillary Clinton Privately Courts Elizabeth Warren

February 17, 2015 · 12:49 pm ET · 35 Comments

Hillary Clinton held a private, one-on-one meeting with Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) in December at Mrs. Clinton’s Washington home, “a move by the Democrats’ leading contender in 2016 to cultivate the increasingly influential senator and leader of the party’s economic populist movement,” the New York Times reports.

“The get-together represented a step toward relationship-building for two women who do not know each other well. And for Mrs. Clinton, it was a signal that she would prefer Ms. Warren’s counsel delivered in person, as a friendly insider, rather than on national television or in opinion articles. And for Ms. Warren, the meeting offered the opportunity to make clear what she believes are the most pressing national issues.”

Is Hillary Clinton Really Favored to Win in 2016?

February 16, 2015 · 4:45 pm ET · 97 Comments

National Journal: “Washington is pretty certain Hillary Clinton is the favorite to win the White House. Democrats have a natural turnout advantage in presidential years, seasoned political operatives reason. Five of the past six popular-vote tallies have gone to the Democratic candidate. And early polls that show Clinton sporting a big lead, especially among women, have strategists wondering how the Republican nominee could ever catch up.”

“But outside of the capital, from Georgia to New York to California, there’s another set of political professionals watching this race: academics and model-makers. And based on the data they track, Democrats have little reason to be so bullish about Clinton’s chances.”

What Is Hillary Clinton Waiting For?

February 12, 2015 · 6:55 am ET · 23 Comments

“Hillary Clinton is all but certain to seek her party’s nomination, and there are no signs she will have a serious challenge. But there is some drama—and tension among Democrats—surrounding her timetable,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Many of those close to her believe that the former secretary of state can wait as long as she wants and is best served by delaying her entry in the 2016 race. At this point, an announcement is most likely to come between April and July, people familiar with the matter say.”

“Some allies and prominent Democrats say she needs to jump in sooner than that and begin raising campaign funds and organizing in states with early contests, even if the payoff means more in the general election than the primaries.”

Axelrod Says Warren Couldn’t Beat Clinton

February 11, 2015 · 6:08 pm ET · 29 Comments

Obama adviser David Axelrod told Hugh Hewitt that he doesn’t think Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) poses a credible threat to Hillary Clinton’s likely presidential bid in 2016.

Said Axelrod: “I know Elizabeth Warren well, and my strong feeling is she’s not going to run. I think she’s trying to influence the direction of the party, and you have more influence as a potential candidate than you do if you take yourself out. So she’s allowing, she’s sticking to this language of ‘I’m not running for president,’ and titillating people with it, because it gives her more leverage.”

He added: “Hillary is probably as well-positioned within her own party as any open seat candidate has been in our lifetime.”

Rifts Develop On Team Clinton

February 11, 2015 · 8:34 am ET · 35 Comments

“Lingering tensions between Hillary Rodham Clinton’s loyalists and the strategists who helped President Obama defeat her in 2008 have erupted into an intense public struggle over who will wield money and clout in her emerging 2016 presidential campaign,” the New York Times reports.

“At issue is controlling access to the deep-pocketed donors whose support is critical to sustain the outside organizations that are paving the way for Mrs. Clinton’s campaign. It is a competition that has been exacerbated, many Clinton supporters said, by Mrs. Clinton’s reluctance to formally enter the race and establish a campaign organization with clear lines of authority.”

Clinton Fundraising Off to Slow Start

February 10, 2015 · 6:09 pm ET · 16 Comments

“The main super PAC supporting Hillary Clinton is struggling in its early efforts to line up cash towards a fundraising goal of as much as $500 million,” Politico reports.

“The group, Priorities USA Action, is trying to secure 30 or more pledges of at least $1 million apiece to be unveiled publicly when the former Secretary of State officially enters the race, sources say. But so far it has received only about ten firm commitments, and it is encountering resistance from top donors who have given to other Clinton-linked vehicles, including ostensibly aligned super PACs and even the apolitical Clinton Foundation.”

Clinton Still Trying to Craft an Economic Message

February 8, 2015 · 4:41 pm ET · 15 Comments

“With advice from more than 200 policy experts, Hillary Rodham Clinton is trying to answer what has emerged as a central question of her early presidential campaign strategy: how to address the anger about income inequality without overly vilifying the wealthy,” the New York Times reports.

“Although people close to Mrs. Clinton say she has not yet settled on a specific platform, she is expected to embrace several principles. They include standard Democratic initiatives like raising the minimum wage, investing in infrastructure, closing corporate tax loopholes and cutting taxes for the middle class. Other ideas are newer, such as providing incentives to corporations to increase profit-sharing with employees and changing labor laws to give workers more collective bargaining power.”

Clinton Pulls Obama Loyalists Into Inner Circle

February 6, 2015 · 7:07 am ET · 7 Comments

“Hillary Clinton is widenening her circle for her second White House bid, adding key staffers more associated with other Democratic heavyweights to her tight-knit camp,” The Hill reports.

“The new additions to Team Hillary suggest she is casting a wider net for help, and has become more open to relying on officials associated with President Obama who haven’t been members of Clinton Inc.”

Clinton Picks Communications Team for Campaign

February 5, 2015 · 8:06 am ET · 19 Comments

Jennifer Palmieri will leave her job as White House communications director for a comparable role with Hillary Clinton’s expected presidential campaign, the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The move locks in place another top position on Mrs. Clinton’s campaign team, should she choose to run. Ms. Palmieri has connections to both the Obama and Clinton worlds, having worked in Bill Clinton ’s White House in the 1990s. She is also close to another figure who bridges both the Obama and Clinton worlds: John Podesta.”

New York Times: “Given the transformed media landscape, Ms. Palmieri is expected to have a team that will include other senior press aides. Brian Fallon, currently at the Justice Department, is expected to potentially handle rapid response, and Karen Finney, a longtime Democratic operative and MSNBC regular, could serve as a press secretary.”

Clinton Will Base Campaign in New York City

February 2, 2015 · 9:00 pm ET · 9 Comments

“If Hillary Clinton decides to run for president, her campaign is likely to be headquartered in New York City, as opposed to the suburbs where advisers had previously planned,” MSNBC reports.

“While Clinton and her advisers had previously eyed the Westchester County city of White Plains, about 25 miles north of Manhattan, Clinton has now more or less decided on a location in New York City, likely either Brooklyn or Queens… A base in gentrifying Brooklyn or Queens could help give Clinton’s campaign a youthful feel, and would likely be a relief for Democratic operatives dreading a relocation to the suburb, or a daily commute from New York City.”
