Clinton Set to Run Ads in Iowa and New Hampshire

August 2, 2015 · 11:18 pm ET · 5 Comments

Hillary Clinton “is set to air the first TV commercials of her presidential campaign—two spots that highlight her biography and motivation for running at a time when she is under fire and losing ground in some polls,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Her campaign plans to spend about $1 million each in Iowa and New Hampshire during five weeks, beginning Tuesday, aides said. The spots will air in the major media markets in these states, the first in the nation to hold nominating 2016 contests.”

The New York Times says the effort “is aimed at defining her candidacy ahead of a crush of Republican attack ads.”

Donald Trump told the Daily Mail that he wants to bring his $7 million Sikorsky helicopter to the Iowa State Fair and give rides to kids.

However, the Des Moines Register reports Trump did not actually ask for permission to do so, “nor would he be granted permission if he does indeed seek it.”

Sanders Gains Ground in Iowa and New Hampshire

June 25, 2015 · 7:06 am ET · 46 Comments

Two new Bloomberg polls find Sen. Bernie Sanders “is gaining on Hillary Clinton in Iowa and New Hampshire, with an appeal as an issue-oriented protest vehicle potentially capable of slowing any coronation of the popular front-runner.”

“In simultaneous surveys, the U.S. senator from Vermont received nearly a quarter of support from likely Democratic caucus and primary voters in the states that host the first presidential nomination balloting early next year, cutting sharply into Clinton’s still-huge lead. The polls suggest substantive and symbolic support for the socialist, as well as a craving among some Democrats for a Clinton rival to rise.”

Pollster Says Clinton Will Lose Iowa and New Hampshire

June 22, 2015 · 7:31 am ET · 63 Comments

GOP pollster Glen Bolger “made a bold prediction” that Hillary Clinton would not win the Iowa caucuses or the New Hampshire primary, Roll Call reports.

Said Bolger: “I think that Hillary is going to lose to Bernie Sanders in Iowa, I think she’s going to lose to Bernie Sanders in New Hampshire. Then Democratic primary voters will go, ‘Oh my God, what are we doing here?'”

Iowa and New Hampshire Fret About Power Loss

June 18, 2015 · 7:55 am ET · 51 Comments

“For nearly a half century, Iowa and New Hampshire have played a pivotal role in American electoral politics. But their top place on the nominating calendar is under threat like never before,” the Boston Globe reports.

Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad (R) “added their voices this week to dozens of political figures who have complained their states’ stature will be undercut by Fox News’ plans to limit the first presidential debate to the top 10 GOP candidates in national polls. The network’s truncated invitation list could do the job usually handled by Iowa’s caucuses and New Hampshire’s primary — winnowing a crowded field.”

“The signs abound that the selection process is changing as candidates shift their strategies to run a national primary campaign, instead of one that runs solely through early nominating states.”

Republicans Kill the Iowa Straw Poll

June 12, 2015 · 12:40 pm ET · 10 Comments

“The Iowa Straw Poll is dead, leaving a heavier burden on winnowing an oversized GOP presidential field on Iowans who will cast the nation’s first votes in February in the caucuses,” the Des Moines Register reports.

“The governing board for the Republican Party of Iowa voted unanimously Friday to cancel the straw poll, a milestone on the path to the White House that had passed the strategic tipping point. It was no longer a political risk for presidential campaigns to walk away from the straw poll, and too many of the 2016 contenders had opted to skip it for it to survive.”

Iowa Straw Poll May Die This Week

June 11, 2015 · 7:59 am ET · 10 Comments

“Friday could be the day the Iowa Straw Poll dies. The governing board for the Republican Party of Iowa will revisit going forward with the event during a conference call Friday morning, as some party officials resign themselves to the view that the much-criticized party fundraiser could potentially damage Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucuses,” GOP insiders told the Des Moines Register.

GOP Candidates Descend on Iowa

June 6, 2015 · 8:11 am ET · 21 Comments

Politico: “It’s a newly created political event, hosted by a first-year senator who’s barely known outside her state. Yet seven presidential candidates and the national media horde has descended on this rural town 45 minutes from Des Moines because the significance of the first annual ‘Joni Ernst’s Roast and Ride’ is already clear: amid great uncertainty about which White House hopefuls will choose to compete in the state GOP’s embattled straw poll in August, this could end up being one of Iowa’s most important retail politicking events of the year.”

June 4, 2015 · 6:10 am ET · 10 Comments

“Republican presidential candidates who skip the Iowa Straw Poll in August aren’t likely to pay much of a price for their decisions. Only 51% of likely Republican caucus-goers in the latest Bloomberg Politics/Des Moines Register Iowa Poll say they think it’s important for a candidate to attend the party fundraiser, a customary marker in the run-up to the Iowa caucuses.”

Des Moines Register/Bloomberg Poll: “Scott Walker’s popularity streak in Iowa is real: He’s seven percentage points ahead of his nearest competition in the presidential horse race here, chased by a tight pack of four in a clear top tier: Ben Carson, Rand Paul, Jeb Bush and Mike Huckabee.”

“Marco Rubio lags in a single-digit scrum, but a deeper look into the numbers shows that if Walker is the hare in Iowa, Rubio may be the tortoise, potentially positioned to pull ahead if he campaigns hard.”

Iowa Straw Poll Fades Into Irrelevance

May 29, 2015 · 7:00 am ET · 13 Comments

“When Republican officials in Iowa convened a planning session Thursday for their quadrennial presidential straw poll, only a handful of advisers to GOP contenders bothered to show up,” the Washington Post reports.

“The sparse attendance and lack of enthusiasm, even from those who came, was worrying to state party brass: The straw poll — a carnival-like organizing ritual that has in past years winnowed the candidate field and marked the start of caucus season — has faded into irrelevance.”
