McCain Likens Russian Hacking to ‘Form of Warfare’

December 12, 2016 at 8:42 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said that there was “no doubt about the hacking” by Russian intelligence services into Democratic campaign accounts, which he called “another form of warfare,” the New York Times reports.

“He said a Senate investigation would be necessary despite President Obama having already ordered up an inquiry, as that one would not be completed before the end of the Obama administration. The implication was that the new Trump administration would not follow through.”

Where Else Has Russia Intervened?

December 12, 2016 at 7:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Frum: “Beyond the incredible claim of a Russian spy operation to assist the winning candidate in this election, it might be illuminating to place Russia’s pro-Trump espionage in a worldwide context. Trump is not the only candidate for whom Putin’s Russia has intervened. It’s a matter of open record that state-owned Russian banks have lent millions of euros to the French National Front. The president of the Czech Republic received substantial campaign contributions from Russian oil interests. The heads of German and British intelligence have complained of Russian attacks on democratic institutions in those countries. Obviously, Russia’s success in the United States represents its greatest coup. But it was not an isolated attempt, and cannot be understood in isolation from other elements of Putin’s strategy.”

“There is not just smoke here. There is a blazing 10-alarm fire, the sirens are wailing, the Russians provided the lighter fluid, and Trump is standing half-burnt and holding a match.”

— Ex-CIA officer Glenn Carle, quoted by The Guardian, on Russian attempts to influence the U.S. presidential election.

Ex-Russia Today Anchor Says Goal Is to Undermine U.S.

December 11, 2016 at 5:50 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Russia Today anchor Liz Wahl told CNN that the goal of the Russian media is to create disinformation to undermine democracy and faith in institutions.

Said Wahl: “I mean, that is the main goal of Russian disinformation, whether it be through their television channels, whether it be through other measures like hacking, like their legions of paid trolls. That is the ultimate goal is to undermine democracy, to undermine faith in our institutions, like the media.”

She added: “And I think that’s the point of Russian media, Russian disinformation has been happening for years now. But people didn’t really take it seriously.”

CIA Says Russia Tried to Help Trump Win

December 10, 2016 at 8:43 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The CIA has concluded in a secret assessment that Russia intervened in the 2016 election to help Donald Trump win the presidency, rather than just to undermine confidence in the U.S. electoral system,” the Washington Post reports.

Aaron Blake: “The report highlights and exacerbates the increasingly fraught situation in which congressional Republicans find themselves with regard to Russia and Trump. By acknowledging and digging into the increasing evidence that Russia helped — or at least attempted to help — tip the scales in Trump’s favor, they risk raising questions about whether Trump would have won without Russian intervention.”

Trump’s Son Held Talks on Russia

November 23, 2016 at 12:39 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump’s eldest son, emerging as a potential envoy for the president-elect, held private discussions with diplomats, businessmen and politicians in Paris last month that focused in part on finding a way to cooperate with Russia to end the war in Syria,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The disclosure of a meeting between the younger Mr. Trump and pro-Russia figures—even if not Russian government officials—poses new questions about contacts between the president-elect, his family and foreign powers. It is also likely to heighten focus on the elder Mr. Trump’s stated desire to cooperate with the Kremlin once in office.”

Podesta Suggests Trump Knew of Russian Email Hack

October 12, 2016 at 7:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign chairman, John Podesta, said that the FBI is investigating a ‘criminal hack’ of his private email account, which he blamed on Russia and suggested that the campaign of Republican Donald Trump could have known what was coming,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Podesta: “I’ve been involved in politics for nearly five decades, and this definitely is the first campaign that I’ve been involved with in which I’ve had to tangle with Russian intelligence agencies, who seem to be doing everything they can on behalf of our opponent.”

Trump Was Told Russia to Blame for Hacks

October 10, 2016 at 2:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“During Sunday’s debate, Donald Trump once again said he doesn’t know whether Russia is trying to hack the U.S. election, despite Friday’s statement by the U.S. intelligence community pointing the finger at Putin — and despite the fact that Trump was personally briefed on Russia’s role in the hacks by U.S. officials,” NBC News reports.

Russia Actively Trying to Undermine the U.S. Election

September 29, 2016 at 9:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Since the spring, U.S. intelligence and law-enforcement agencies have seen mounting evidence of an active Russian influence operation targeting the 2016 presidential election. It is very unlikely the Russians could sway the actual vote count, because our election infrastructure is decentralized and voting machines are not accessible from the Internet. But they can sow disruption and instability up to, and on, Election Day, more than a dozen senior U.S. officials tell Time, undermining faith in the result and in democracy itself.”

“The activities of Trump adviser Carter Page, who has extensive business interests in Russia, have been discussed with senior members of Congress during recent briefings about suspected efforts by Moscow to influence the presidential election.”

How Much Is Russia Trying to Influence the Election?

September 5, 2016 at 8:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Intelligence and law enforcement agencies are probing what they see as a broad covert Russian operation in the United States to sow public distrust in the upcoming presidential election and in US political institutions,” the Boston Globe reports.

“The aim is to understand the scope and intent of the Russian campaign, which incorporates cyber-tools to hack systems used in the political process, enhancing Russia’s ability to spread disinformation.”

Russia Was Involved In DNC Email Breach

July 25, 2016 at 8:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Until Friday, that charge, with its eerie suggestion of a Kremlin conspiracy to aid Donald J. Trump, has been only whispered. But the release on Friday of some 20,000 stolen emails from the Democratic National Committee’s computer servers, many of them embarrassing to Democratic leaders, has intensified discussion of the role of Russian intelligence agencies in disrupting the 2016 campaign.”

“Proving the source of a cyberattack is notoriously difficult. But researchers have concluded that the national committee was breached by two Russian intelligence agencies, which were the same attackers behind previous Russian cyberoperations at the White House, the State Department and the Joint Chiefs of Staff last year. And metadata from the released emails suggests that the documents passed through Russian computers. Though a hacker claimed responsibility for giving the emails to WikiLeaks, the same agencies are the prime suspects. Whether the thefts were ordered by Mr. Putin, or just carried out by apparatchiks who thought they might please him, is anyone’s guess.”

October 1, 2015 at 9:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 34 Comments

“Russian officials insisted they were attacking the Islamic State after efforts by the U.S. and its partners had failed to dislodge the extremists, but U.S. officials said the strikes appeared to target opponents of President Bashar al-Assad and hit units that were trained by the CIA,” the Washington Post reports.

First Read: “If Syria was already a black mark for the Obama administration, it’s now turning into a full-fledged debacle, with Russia now appearing to bomb Syrian rebels opposed to Assad.”
