Virginia’s 5th District Moves to Toss Up

September 18, 2020 at 9:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Cook Political Report: “Is it deja vu all over again? In 2008, Virginia’s 5th District was the site of a gigantic upset when tireless 34-year-old Democrat Tom Perriello unseated GOP Rep. Virgil Goode by 727 votes. Perriello took advantage of an Obama wave of student turnout in Charlottesville and Black voters in Southside Virginia, as well as a deeply polarizing GOP opponent who barely raised money and ran a stone age campaign.”

“Fast forward to 2020. Democrats have coalesced behind perhaps their most ideal House candidate anywhere: Cameron Webb, a telegenic 37-year-old Black physician who works at UVA’s School of Medicine. Meanwhile, GOP former Liberty University athletics official Bob Good (no relation to Virgil Goode) is still struggling to unite Republicans after defeating GOP Rep. Denver Riggleman at a June drive-through convention.”

John Warner Endorses Democrats In Virginia

October 31, 2018 at 10:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Former Sen. John Warner, who spent 30 years representing Virginia as a Republican, is lending his support to Leslie Cockburn, a Democrat and former investigative journalist vying to represent the 5th District in the U.S. House,” the Fauquirer Times reports.

“Warner endorsed Sen. Tim Kaine, also a Democrat, in his race against GOP nominee Corey Stewart in September.”

Said Warner: “I’m still a Republican. I’m going to tell this gang, I’m still a Republican. You can’t take that away from me. But you’ve got to have the courage to do what’s right for the country and what’s right for your state.”

Garrett May Quit Congress

May 23, 2018 at 4:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Tom Garrett (R-VA) “has abruptly parted ways with his chief of staff and is considering not seeking reelection in November,” Politico reports.

“The first-term Garrett represents a conservative district that stretches from southern reaches of the state to more northern areas. His seat has become more competitive this election year in part because he’s posted anemic fundraising totals. In recent months, the congressman has struggled to keep pace on the fundraising front with his Democratic opponent, journalist and filmmaker Leslie Cockburn.”

The Cook Political Report rates Garrett’s seat as Lean Republican.
