Expect More Presidents Who Don’t Win Popular Vote

April 14, 2018 at 6:06 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dan Balz: “The authors ran a series of simulations for elections between 2020 and 2036, using different assumptions about the shape of the electorate, while also trying to estimate how tweaks or shifts in levels of support for Republican or Democratic candidates would affect the popular vote in the states and, therefore, the electoral college and the national totals.”

“One conclusion is that the country should be braced for repeats of what has happened twice in the past five presidential campaigns — a popular-vote outcome different from the electoral college result. ‘This report finds quite a few future scenarios could mimic the result of the 2016 election — a Democratic in the popular vote with a Republican win in the electoral college,’ the authors write.”

Terry McAuliffe Eyes White House Bid

April 8, 2018 at 11:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Richmond Times-Dispatch: “It’s been four years since he spent much time behind the wheel. McAuliffe got used to someone else doing the driving. With a laugh, he says he could get used to it again. Three months after leaving the Virginia governorship, the perquisites of which included a lumbering black SUV driven by a state trooper, McAuliffe is considering a second act: the presidency… These days, McAuliffe is doing what national prospects are supposed to do: traveling to key states, plumping for his party’s candidates, tweeting, talking — and listening.”

“Potential 2020 presidential candidate Jason Kander is hiring an Iowa-based communications director as his national organization staffs up,” Politico reports.

“Kander, the former Missouri secretary of state and failed 2016 Senate candidate who has become an unlikely national Democratic figure, is bringing on Jason Noble, who on Friday announced he was leaving his job as political reporter for the Des Moines Register.”

Rob Porter Hired by Trump’s 2020 Campaign Manager

April 4, 2018 at 2:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Former Trump aide and accused wife-beater Rob Porter may have landed himself a new gig at the Trump campaign,” the Daily Mail reports.

“Within days of being let go as staff secretary to President Trump, alleged wife abuser Porter was hired by Brad Parscale, the president’s 2020 campaign manager… In addition to leading the Trump campaign, Parscale also has a political branding and strategy business… It is believed Porter is being paid by Parscale’s company with the intention of involving him in the campaign at some point in the future.”

Kasich Says Independent Run Unlikely

April 4, 2018 at 1:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gov. John Kasich told CNN he is “unlikely” to challenge President Trump in 2020 as an independent.

Said Kasich: “Am I going to run as an Independent? No, I’m not even thinking about that, It’s unlikely, but when you have options on the table, all options are on the table, right?”

Why Trump Will Lose If He Runs Against Amazon

April 3, 2018 at 12:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Josh Barro: “Amazon doesn’t release statistics on Prime membership, but the investment research firm Consumer Intelligence Research Partners uses a consumer survey to estimate that 90 million American adults have access to an Amazon Prime membership… So, the Amazon Prime user demographic is already substantially larger than the ‘Trump voter’ demographic — and while Trump’s support base appears stagnant at best, Cowen believes Amazon continues to add new Prime members at a double-digit annual percentage rate.”

“So, Trump will likely be seeking reelection in 2020 at a time when nearly half the 240 million adults in the US are users of Amazon Prime.”

“Does he really want to have a fight over whether Amazon should have to pay higher prices for shipping — which, in turn, would likely mean a higher Prime membership fee, or maybe even an end to free two-day shipping?”

Kasich Heads to New Hampshire

April 2, 2018 at 9:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gov. John Kasich’s (R) “return to New Hampshire this week is likely to get widespread media coverage as a significant milestone toward what many view as his inevitable 2020 presidential campaign,” the Columbus Dispatch reports.

“Kasich’s ‘fireside chat’ Tuesday evening at a college near the state capital of Concord is his only public event… But there will be opportunities to reconnect with the network that propelled him to a second-place finish behind Trump in 2016, as well as connect with new potential supporters disgruntled with Trump.”

Young People Really Don’t Like Trump

March 30, 2018 at 11:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Associated Press-NORC-MTV poll finds that just 33% of Americans between the ages of 15 and 34 approve of Trump’s job performance. That’s 9 points lower than all adults.

“The survey is the first in a series of polls designed to highlight the voices of the youngest generation of voters. The respondents, all of whom will be old enough to vote when Trump seeks re-election in 2020, represent the most diverse generation in American history.”

Only 40% of Americans think Trump will win in 2020, similar to the 44% who said the same for Obama.

Tom Steyer Is Building a Political Death Star

March 29, 2018 at 10:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Daily Beast: “Ask a professional Democrat for his or her opinion on billionaire political donor Tom Steyer, and the answer you often get is a variation of the following: Why would someone with so much money spend it all on a fruitless attempt to impeach Donald Trump?”

“Press them for their thoughts in private, however, and many concede that the man funding a $40 million campaign to get rid of the current president is not just a gifted self-promoter, but is, in fact, building one of the true powerhouse entities within the Democratic ecosystem. Steyer is poised to play a massive role in the midterms and pull the party in the direction of his choosing. He’s also set himself up incredibly well—perhaps better than any other potential aspirant—for a serious presidential bid in 2020.”

Said one Democratic strategist: “If I were a rich person and I wanted to run for president. I would be doing exactly what he’s doing.”

How Losing the House Could Help Trump In 2020

March 28, 2018 at 9:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Stu Rothenberg: “Republican strategists from both the populist and establishment wings of the party agree that losing the House in November would not necessarily be a terrible thing for Trump’s 2020 re-election bid.”

“While control of that chamber would give Democrats a platform from which to investigate the president, his family and the entire administration, it would also give Trump something he desperately needs: a very visible enemy.”

“Trump supporters see House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi as an ideal adversary — a far-left, San Francisco elitist with poll numbers as bad as or worse than the president’s.”

Pete Buttigieg for President?

March 27, 2018 at 7:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “It’s not happenstance. Nor is keeping on Lis Smith, the hard-charging political operative who makes sure he’s constantly in the news. Or keeping up with Obama strategist David Axelrod, who recommended he hire Smith in the first place for the Democratic National Committee chair race that put him on Democrats’ radar last year. Or quietly building relationships over dinners and drinks with big-name Democrats, or courting national reporters, or wooing donors for his PAC, or digging in on political advertising research.”

“Buttigieg is getting closer to a presidential race. And serious people are telling the South Bend, Indiana mayor, who’d be the first major presidential candidate who’s either openly gay or an Afghanistan veteran or a millennial, to take it seriously.”

Has Trump Already Sealed the GOP’s Fate In 2018?

March 22, 2018 at 12:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ron Browstein: “Every time Donald Trump breaks a window, congressional Republicans obediently sweep up the glass.”

“That’s become one of the most predictable patterns of his turbulent presidency—and a defining dynamic of the approaching midterm elections. Each time they overtly defend his behavior, or implicitly excuse him by failing to object, they bind themselves to him more tightly.”

“With all of this, the GOP leadership is sending an unmistakable signal to voters antagonistic or ambivalent about Trump: So long as Republicans hold the congressional majority, they will not act to meaningfully constrain, or even oversee, the president. That choice represents an epic gamble for November—and beyond.”

Kasich Open to Independent Bid for President

March 22, 2018 at 8:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gov. John Kasich (R) said that the Republican Party has “never been my master” and that “all of my options are on the table” for 2020, Politico reports.

Asked if he was ruling out running against President Trump as an independent, Kasich told reporters, “All of my options are on the table. But I’m a Republican, I’m a conservative, and I just want to add to the public debate and do a good job.”

2020 Democrats Are Already Hiring

March 19, 2018 at 8:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“At least a dozen possible Democratic presidential candidates have begun bolstering their teams by adding aides with campaign experience to their Senate staffs, personal offices or 2018 reelection payrolls,” Politico reports.

“The hires are never explicitly advertised or designed to be about 2020. But the behind-the-scenes shuffle is a long-overdue stage in the traditional precampaign scramble. Potential candidates who have run before — like Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Vice President Joe Biden — largely have their core teams in place.”

“Yet in many other cases, chiefs of staff and senior strategists are now actively looking for new talent after receiving clear instructions from their bosses: I don’t know whether I’m going to run for president, but do everything you need to do to get me in position, just in case.”
