U.S. to Announce Major Fusion Energy Breakthrough

December 12, 2022 · 6:36 am ET · Leave a Comment

“The Department of Energy plans to announce Tuesday that scientists have been able for the first time to produce a fusion reaction that creates a net energy gain — a major milestone in the decades-long, multibillion-dollar quest to develop a technology that provides unlimited, cheap, clean power,” the Washington Post reports.

“The aim of fusion research is to replicate the nuclear reaction through which energy is created on the sun. It is a “holy grail” of carbon-free power that scientists have been chasing since the 1950s. It is still at least a decade — maybe decades — away from commercial use, but the latest development is likely to be touted by the Biden administration as an affirmation of a massive investment by the government over the years.”

December 4, 2022 · 11:21 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“The push by Sen. Joe Manchin to overhaul the nation’s permitting process for infrastructure projects could get some last-ditch help from the House of Representatives, in its annual defense policy measure,“ the Washington Post reports.

“House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has been in talks with House Armed Services Committee Chairman Adam Smith (D-WA) about attaching a version of Manchin’s permitting bill to the National Defense Authorization Act.”

“New text of the defense bill that includes the permitting bill could be released Monday before the House Rules Committee considers the measure.”

“The Treasury Department is allowing Chevron to resume ‘limited’ energy production in Venezuela after years of sanctions that have dramatically curtailed oil and gas profits that have flowed to Maduro’s government.”

Inside the Saudi Plan to Keep the World Hooked on Oil

November 21, 2022 · 7:44 am ET · Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The kingdom’s plan for keeping oil at the center of the global economy is playing out around the world in Saudi financial and diplomatic activities, as well as in the realms of research, technology and even education.”

“It is a strategy at odds with the scientific consensus that the world must swiftly move away from fossil fuels, including oil and gas, to avoid the worst consequences of global warming.”

Joe Manchin (D-WV), the chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, “is not planning to hold a hearing this year on the nomination of FERC Chair Richard Glick for another term, dealing a potentially major blow to the regulatory body that is crucial for President Joe Biden’s climate agenda,” Politico reports.

The Northeast Is Hurtling Toward a Winter Heating Crisis

November 8, 2022 · 11:40 am ET · Leave a Comment

“In the most densely populated corner of the US, temperatures are about to drop after a stretch of unusually warm weather. And the signs of a winter crisis are already multiplying,” Bloomberg reports.

“Heating oil delivered to New York is the priciest ever. Retailers in Connecticut are rationing it to prevent panic buying. New England’s stockpiles of diesel and heating oil — the same product, taxed differently — are a third of normal levels. Natural gas inventories are also below average. A Massachusetts-based utility is imploring President Joe Biden to prepare emergency measures to prevent a gas shortage.”

Manchin Erupts at Biden Over Coal Comments

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) on Saturday slammed President Biden after he called for coal plants across the US to be shuttered, saying Biden’s remarks are “outrageous and divorced from reality” and suggesting it’s “time he learn a lesson,” CNN reports.

Associated Press: “Manchin’s stinging rebuke of his party’s leader comes at precarious time for Democrats on the final weekend of campaigning before Tuesday’s elections that could put Republicans back in power in Congress.”

Inside the White House’s Fixation on Gas Prices

November 2, 2022 · 9:39 am ET · Leave a Comment

“President Biden’s top aide wakes up almost every morning at around 3:30 a.m. in his suburban Maryland home, rolls over in bed and pulls out his iPhone to check a number critical to the fate of the presidency,” the Washington Post reports.

“The information sought by Biden’s chief of staff is not covert intelligence from a foreign government nor a top-secret national security assessment, but a publicly available tracker on AAA.com — the average national gas price, which updates in the early morning…”

“Klain’s fixation on gas prices reflects a wider sense inside the Biden administration that the president’s popularity is, to a remarkable degree, tied up in that single indicator — one that many economists regard as not nearly as important as the attention it gets. With some incredulity, White House economic officials have watched for months as the president’s approval rating moves in almost exact relation to the average national gas price.”

Saudis Sought Much Deeper Cut in Oil Production

October 20, 2022 · 5:29 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“The Saudi-led oil cartel OPEC+’s announcement earlier this month that it was cutting 2 million barrels of oil per day — a move that would drive up the price of oil just a month before midterm elections — rankled Democrats in Washington,” The Intercept reports.

“They accused Riyadh of aligning itself with Russia, another powerful member of OPEC+, which would indeed profit off the move.”

“But Saudi Arabia actually pushed to cut oil production twice as much as Russian President Vladimir Putin, surprising the Russians… suggesting that Riyadh’s motives run deeper than what top Democrats want to admit.”
