Netanyahu Struggles to Form Coalition

May 6, 2015 · 11:29 am ET · 28 Comments

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “is still struggling to put together a new right wing coalition government in Israel before a looming deadline at midnight on Wednesday,” the Guardian reports.

“Although the prime minister is expected to scrape together a coalition by the thinnest of margins – with the key support of the far-right Jewish Home party led by Naftali Bennett – it appears it will be at the head of an unstable and vulnerable government. Failure to meet the deadline would mean that the Israeli president, Reuven Rivlin, would be required to ask another Israeli MP to try to form a government.”

NDP Wins In Alberta After Right Splits

May 6, 2015 · 7:07 am ET · 32 Comments

“It’s a massive shock that turns Canadian politics on its head: the NDP has won a majority government in Alberta,” the CBC reports.

“The NDP won just over 41% of the popular vote, the Wildrose got 24% and the PCs were at about 28% — roughly what was reported by many pollsters in the run-up to the election.”

Cameron Fights for His Political Life

May 6, 2015 · 7:00 am ET · 12 Comments

in the final days of an unexpectedly tight contest with Labor Party leader Ed Miliband, British Prime Minister David Cameron “has been letting it rip,” the Washington Post reports.

“Whether the conspicuous display of emotion will save Cameron’s premiership remains to be seen. Polls suggest the Tories are likely to win more seats than Labor but may not have the support needed from smaller parties to form a government in a year when the British electorate has fractured as never before.”

“For Cameron, a 48-year-old Oxford graduate of royal lineage who had openly coveted the top job in British politics since his youth, that would probably mean the abrupt end of his career. It could also mark the final failure of his attempt to steer the Conservative Party toward the political center, an effort that critics say he abandoned all too easily during his first term.”

Mashable has a good voter guide explaining the key issues.

Smaller Parties Will Decide Britain’s Elections

May 5, 2015 · 6:55 am ET · 7 Comments

Washington Post: “About 30 million British citizens will venture out on Thursday to crumbling town halls and soaring medieval churches, set stubby pencils to paper and take part in a hallowed ritual: They will vote. But for all the orderliness and timeless quality of Election Day, politics in Britain has rarely been as fractured as it is today. The two-party system that dominated the 20th century has collapsed, and no one quite knows what will replace it.”

“The fissures in British politics have been amply evident on the campaign trail, where the competition is no longer just between the long-dominant Conservative and Labor parties. Both are now fighting multi-front wars against challengers on the right and left. If once they were considered fringe players, these smaller parties are now central actors, with the potential to play an instrumental role in dictating the country’s direction.”

Family Feud Roils Far-Right French Party

May 4, 2015 · 9:34 pm ET · 16 Comments

France’s far-right National Front suspended founder Jean-Marie Le Pen over a string of controversial remarks and amid a deepening feud with his daughter Marine, who now leads the party, AFP reports.

A furious Le Pen described his suspension as a “criminal act” and said he wanted to disown his daughter, ordering her to “give up her name.”

What Can Republicans Learn from Britain’s Conservatives?

May 3, 2015 · 8:33 am ET · 34 Comments

Washington Post: “Five years ago, British Prime Minister David Cameron looked like a modern conservative ready to offer the Republican Party a model for the future. Today, four days before critical elections here, he is a politician fighting for a second term and buffeted by many of the same problems and pressures that afflict and divide the GOP in the United States.”

“There are important differences between the Republican Party and Britain’s Conservative Party. There is no Christian conservative movement here, for example. So the parallels are imperfect. But the long-term prognosis for both is similar. Negative images and changing demographics combine to put both parties in a defensive posture — even as they claim some election victories along the way.”

Candidate’s Nude Campaign Poster Skirts Japan Election Law

April 26, 2015 · 7:39 am ET · 16 Comments

“Campaigning for Sunday’s second wave of quadrennial unified local elections has highlighted a legal loophole that allows candidates to go to extremes — including nudity — to gain votes,” the Japan Times reports.

“In contrast with the ubiquitous portrait shots preferred by most candidates, the campaign poster for Teruki Goto, an independent running for the Chiyoda Ward Assembly in Tokyo, went viral after it showed him posing nude against a Rising Sun flag motif while raising a katana over the Imperial Seal, his genitals covered by his name.”

“According to the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry, the use of nudity is not banned because there are no restrictions on poster design in the Public Offices Election Law. All posters are legal as long they bear the name of the candidate and are posted on the designated boards.”

Cameron Promises Good Times for U.K. Voters

April 15, 2015 · 5:19 am ET · 1 Comment

British prime minister David Cameron “offered a glimpse of the ‘good life’ after five years of economic pain, at Tuesday’s launch of a Conservative manifesto that saw the prime minister break with austerity,” the Financial Times reports.

“With Conservatives and Labour deadlocked in the polls, Mr Cameron made a series of unfunded promises to voters to underpin his claim that better times are around the corner… And he followed a Thatcherite script in his attempt to win over wavering voters, including UK Independence party supporters.”

Family Feud Divides Far Right French Party

April 13, 2015 · 6:35 am ET · 8 Comments

“Jean-Marie Le Pen, founder of France’s far-right National Front, said on Monday he would not seek its ticket to stand in regional polls, taking some of the sting out of a damaging public row with his daughter Marine, the party’s current leader,” Reuters reports.

“But the 86-year-old former paratrooper told Le Figaro in an interview that he was disappointed by his daughter and would not quit politics, showing that the family feud that could emerge as a threat to the FN’s bid for power is not necessarily over. Marine Le Pen, who in 2011 took over as FN party leader from her father, has been trying to persuade him to retire both from the December regional polls and from politics altogether.”

Labour Pulls Ahead in U.K. Elections

April 9, 2015 · 2:50 pm ET · 26 Comments

New Statesman: “Good polling news for Labour, as three consecutive polls suggest the party has pulled ahead. Survation shows Labour four points ahead of the Tories (35 per cent to 31 per cent), Panelbase has it six points ahead (37 per cent to 31 per cent), and TNS gives the party a three-point lead (33 per cent to 31 per cent).”

April 5, 2015 · 8:47 am ET · 18 Comments

An average of polls by the Telegraph shows both the Conservatives and Labor have scored 34% across all of the polls published during the last seven days.

“There are even signs that the Tories may have narrowly pulled ahead. Of the thirteen polls published in the last week, the Conservatives were ahead in six, Labour in only four. The two parties were tied in the remaining three.”

Cameron Will Not Serve Third Term as Prime Minister

March 25, 2015 · 4:08 am ET · 4 Comments

British Prime Minister David Cameron has ruled out serving a third term, The Guardian reports.

Said Cameron: “I’ve said I’ll stand for a full second term, but I think after that it will be time for new leadership. Terms are like shredded wheat: two are wonderful but three might just be too many.”

Netanyahu Apologizes to Israeli Arabs

March 23, 2015 · 5:15 pm ET · 31 Comments

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apologized “for warning last week that Arab citizens were voting in “droves,” comments that have been denounced by President Obama, other world leaders, American Jewish leaders and many Israelis as anti-democratic, race-baiting and fear-mongering,” the New York Times reports.

“The apology came hours after Israel’s president, Reuven Rivlin, announced that Mr. Netanyahu had secured the backing of 67 of the 120 Parliament members elected last week and officially designated him to form the next government.”

Obama Still Must Deal with Netanyahu

March 18, 2015 · 11:53 am ET · 46 Comments

Benjamin Netanyahu’s “resounding victory in Israeli elections on Tuesday appears to have dashed any hopes President Obama might have had for a way out of his tumultuous and often bitter relationship with the prime minister,” the New York Times reports.

“White House officials offered no immediate reaction late Tuesday night to results that showed Mr. Netanyahu with a substantial lead after a divisive campaign that featured a national debate about whether the Israeli leader was undermining the country’s longstanding connection with the United States.”

Wall Street Journal: “White House officials hold out little hope that, in the remaining 20 months of President Barack Obama’s term, the U.S. and Israeli leaders will be able to narrow their differences over a nuclear agreement with Iran or make progress on Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, based on early assessments Wednesday.”

Netanyahu Easily Wins Israeli Elections

March 18, 2015 · 1:53 am ET · 83 Comments

“After a bruising campaign focused on his failings, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel won a clear victory in Tuesday’s elections and seemed all but certain to form a new government and serve a fourth term, though he offended many voters and alienated allies in the process,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Netanyahu and his allies had seized on earlier exit polls that showed a slimmer Likud lead to create an aura of inevitability, and celebrated with singing and dancing. While his opponents vowed a fight, Israeli political analysts agreed even before most of the ballots were counted that he had the advantage, with more seats having gone to the right-leaning parties likely to support him.”

March 17, 2015 · 4:45 pm ET · 86 Comments

“Exit polls for Israeli elections on Tuesday showed a virtual tie between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his main center-left challenger, Isaac Herzog,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Haaretz has the latest exit polling.

Two Reminders About the Israeli Election

March 17, 2015 · 10:33 am ET · 6 Comments

First Read: “One, it could take weeks to determine who is prime minister (victory comes by a party leader cobbling together a governing coalition among all of Israel’s different parties). And two, it’s possible that Netanyahu could lose in the short-term today (coming in second) but still win in the end (by being the one able to form a government). In fact, that’s what happened in 2009.”

Netanyahu Pledges No Palestinian State

March 16, 2015 · 2:11 pm ET · 77 Comments

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel said that “as long as he is the leader, a Palestinian state would not be established, reversing his support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Netanyahu made the assertion on the eve of an election in which he is trailing in the polls. He has been campaigning aggressively, appealing to conservatives for support.”
