Voters Forget Fast — Just Ask Kevin McCarthy

October 10, 2025 at 12:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The government shutdown is once again dominating headlines, with Democrats and Republicans locked in a familiar fight to assign blame.

But as dramatic as the standoff appears, history suggests it’s unlikely to matter much when voters cast their ballots next year.

The 4 Keys for Democrats to Win a Senate Race in Texas

October 10, 2025 at 10:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David DeAngelo, Principal of DL DeAngelo Consulting, LLC, offers this look at the U.S. Senate race in Texas.

Rep. Wesley Hunt’s (R-TX) entry into the Republican Senate primary in Texas is a powerful reminder that an election can hinge on a single strategic decision made by one key player—not merely on the collective choices of millions of voters.

Former Aides Turn on Katie Porter

October 9, 2025 at 10:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Just hours after California gubernatorial candidate Katie Porter (D) stumbled through a train wreck of a local TV interview, another damaging video surfaced—this one far worse.

In the new footage, Porter is sitting beside then–Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, filming a conversation about electric vehicles. As they talk, a staffer walks behind the camera to correct one of Porter’s claims.

When Leaders Stop Listening

October 9, 2025 at 8:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The first case study I ever read in graduate school was from Graham Allison’s Essence of Decision — the classic examination of how real-world government decisions are made.

Allison’s insight was deceptively simple but profound: what we call “decisions” are rarely the product of one rational mind. They emerge from bureaucracies, organizational routines, and power struggles that limit what information leaders even see.

Man Who Led Insurrection Threatens to Invent Another

October 8, 2025 at 1:50 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Texas National Guard troops crossed into Illinois last night — against the explicit wishes of Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) — in what amounts to a state-on-state confrontation unprecedented in modern America.

President Trump this morning also called for both Democrats to be jailed.

Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl

October 8, 2025 at 11:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The NFL’s selection of Bad Bunny for the Super Bowl halftime show has turned what objectively looked like a good business decision into the latest battleground in America’s endless culture war.

Conservative commentators erupted in outrage, denouncing the Puerto Rican megastar as “anti-American” and “ICE-hating,” while right-wing outlets like Newsmax described his appearance as a “humiliation ritual” for “real Americans.”

The More Trump Talks, the More He Screws This Up

October 8, 2025 at 10:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The driving force behind Democrats embracing the government shutdown is simple: coalition maintenance.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) learned how important that is the hard way. When he backed down from the last shutdown fight, he infuriated progressives and dramatically weakened his standing.

Republicans Have a Mess in Texas

October 7, 2025 at 1:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-TX) officially entered the Republican Senate primary in Texas, complicating what has for months looked like a two-man battle between Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Attorney General Ken Paxton (R).

But Hunt’s entry threatens to split the vote, making it harder for either Cornyn or Paxton to reach 50% and avoid a runoff.

Both Parties Think They’re Winning, So Nobody’s Budging

October 7, 2025 at 1:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

This government shutdown is unlike previous ones in that both parties seemingly think they have the political advantage.

When both sides believe they’re winning, neither side rushes to compromise.

How This Shutdown Might End

October 6, 2025 at 11:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The government shutdown shows no sign of ending, and there’s little reason to think it will anytime soon.

Democrats and Republicans seem comfortable — even politically motivated — to let the government remain shuttered.

Does Trump Actually Know What’s Happening?

October 6, 2025 at 8:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hours before President Trump ordered 200 Oregon National Guard members into what he called “war-ravaged Portland,” he admitted he might not be getting accurate information from his own team.

In an interview with NBC News, Trump described a conversation with Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek (D), saying she had told him that conditions on the ground were far calmer than the chaos portrayed to him by his aides.

Trump Gets Away With What Sank Clinton and Romney

October 4, 2025 at 4:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

One of the worst mistakes a politician can make is to come across as smug — dismissing or disrespecting voters.

The conventional wisdom holds that Hillary Clinton’s “basket of deplorables” line in 2016 and Mitt Romney’s “47 percent” remark in 2012 were fatal missteps.

A Shutdown With No Clear Exit Ramp

October 3, 2025 at 7:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

I underestimated one thing about this shutdown: both parties have strong political incentives to keep the government closed.

In past shutdowns, one side has always pushed to reopen the government. This time, large factions in both parties see value in prolonging the fight.

Republican Trust in the News Media Craters

October 2, 2025 at 9:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Gallup survey finds confidence in the media has dropped to an all-time low, with just 28% of Americans saying they trust newspapers, television and radio to report the news fairly.

It’s the first time in nearly five decades of polling that trust in the press has fallen below 30%.

This Isn’t Gridlock

October 2, 2025 at 11:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump is weaponizing the government shutdown.

Billions in federal funds bound for Democratic-led states are being withheld, and officials are preparing plans to lay off large numbers of civil servants.
