How Paul Ryan Hopes to Lead Republicans

December 21, 2015 · 10:45 am ET · 26 Comments

Time: “To be a Republican leader these days is to be hated, by primary voters, Tea Partiers and your own party’s presidential candidates, and for the last several years, it has meant getting very little if anything accomplished. Ryan has set it upon himself to break both of those trends. Rather than serving, as Boehner did, as a punch line for late night television, Ryan intends to lead his party, even amid a presidential campaign, transforming both its focus and its tactics. He is conspiring with his more radical members, while at the same time trying to curb his own party’s radical tendencies. He aims to take the ideology of conservatism, with its fundamentally nostalgic roots, into the 21st Century.”

Said Ryan: “I want to make us the party of ideas, to offer the nation an alternative plan, an agenda. I really believe that we have an obligation given that we don’t like the direction the country is headed, people should be given a choice as to the direction of America. We must offer that vision, should show people what that looks like.”

Graham Ends Presidential Campaign

December 21, 2015 · 9:43 am ET · 51 Comments

Sen. Lindsey Graham “is suspending his presidential run,” Politico reports.

“His announcement came on the same day as the deadline hit for him to remove his name from the South Carolina primary ballot, a date that had been closely watched amid speculation that the low-polling Graham would want to avoid a potentially poor performance in his own state’s contest.”

The GOP’s Diploma Divide

December 21, 2015 · 8:56 am ET · 28 Comments

David Wasserman: “The latest polls of the Republican presidential primary show a party badly divided by education: Donald Trump’s strong showings are entirely attributable to huge leads among voters without a college degree, while voters with a degree are split among several candidates.”

“But the Republican Party’s ‘diploma divide’ isn’t new: It was central to the 2012 race, with roles reversed. That year, Mitt Romney’s nomination was attributable to GOP voters with college degrees, while voters without a college degree were split. Ultimately, the 2016 race may come down to which side of the diploma divide unites the fastest and most thoroughly once voting begins.”

Trump Quote of the Day

“She lies about emails, she lies about Whitewater, she lies about everything. She will be a disaster about everything as president of the United States.”

Trump Began Planning Bid Right After Romney Lost

December 21, 2015 · 8:11 am ET · 6 Comments

“Records show that Donald Trump applied to trademark the phrase ‘Make America Great Again’ six days after President Obama was elected to a second term,” the Daily Beast reports.

“The timing suggests that Trump was preparing his latest run for president long before most people imagine…. The application said the phrase was to be used for ‘political action committee service, namely, promoting public awareness of political issues and fundraising in the field of politics.'”

Conservatives Vote to Back Cruz Over Rubio

December 21, 2015 · 8:05 am ET · 44 Comments

“Christian conservative activists whose support has been hotly pursued by Republican presidential candidates have begun to quietly coalesce around Sen. Ted Cruz — a major boost for his efforts to present himself as the leading challenger to front-runner Donald Trump,” the Washington Post reports.

“Members of this core GOP constituency have long been torn between several favorites in the party’s crowded field. But many organization leaders have decided in recent days to line up behind Cruz because they consider him the best-funded and most electable social conservative in the race… He won the backing of a key evangelical coalition after a secret Dec. 7 meeting in which top national activists agreed to roll out a stream of endorsements, many timed for maximum impact between now and March 1, Super Tuesday.”

What Did the Sanders Campaign See?

December 21, 2015 · 7:32 am ET · 22 Comments

Politico: “Hillary’s Clinton’s team is genuinely jittery about the sneak peek taken by Bernie Sanders staffers into their secret voter file. The unauthorized fishing expedition into the database housing the names and demographic information of voters Clinton plans to target – which led to the sacking of a top Sanders staffer and the suspension of two more — has embittered the campaigns against one another, even if the two principals made nice on the debate stage Saturday night.”

Not All Trump Backers are Political Neophytes

December 21, 2015 · 7:15 am ET · 3 Comments

“One of the biggest unanswered questions about Donald Trump’s presidential campaign is whether the large crowds he’s drawing are there to see a pop-culture celebrity or someone they actually plan to vote for to occupy the White House… An unscientific survey of more than 100 people, conducted by Bloomberg Politics during brief interviews scattered throughout an auditorium where Trump spoke Saturday in eastern Iowa, suggests his fans in the critical early state aren’t all political newcomers, with about half saying they’ve attended the caucuses before.”

“That’s important because past participation is viewed by political strategists as one of the best indicators of future attendance at an event that’s more complex than voting in a primary and sometimes intimidating to the uninitiated.”

Paul Says Rubio Should Resign

December 21, 2015 · 7:08 am ET · 8 Comments

Sen. Rand Paul told CNN that Sen. Marco Rubio should resign since he doesn’t show up to cast votes in the Senate.

Said Paul: “Well, you know, the difference between Marco Rubio and I is, I show up for work. And we had the biggest vote of the whole year, voting on a trillion dollars worth of spending, and he didn’t show up. So, yes, I think he ought to resign or give his pay back to the taxpayer.”

Ted Cruz Copies Trump Style

December 21, 2015 · 6:40 am ET · 6 Comments

New York Times: “In ways cosmetic and substantive, Mr. Cruz has in recent days seemed to more closely resemble the man he has been chasing — or, more precisely, quietly drafting behind — for months.”

“Perhaps most notably, Mr. Cruz has sharpened his already uncompromising language, eager to retain his own hold on popular anger against the political class, and to demonstrate conservative purity amid attacks from Senator Marco Rubio over immigration and national security policies.”

Rubio Steers Clear of Actual Voters

December 21, 2015 · 6:34 am ET · 24 Comments

Washington Post: “Republican activists — including many who appreciate Rubio’s formidable political gifts and view him as the party’s best hope for beating Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton — say they are alarmed at his seeming disdain for the day-to-day grind of retail politics. Even some staunch supporters are anxious.”

“That may be, as some of his allies fret privately, a sign of overconfidence in his own abilities. Or it may be a smart strategic decision that the personal touch is overrated in an era in which celebrity billionaire Donald Trump is leading the field with a campaign that consists largely of mega-rallies, barrages of tweets and television interviews that are literally phoned in.”

Obama Says Trump Exploiting Fears

December 21, 2015 · 6:30 am ET · 4 Comments

President Obama told NPR that Donald Trump “is exploiting the resentment and anxieties of working-class men to boost his campaign. Mr. Obama also argued that some of the scorn directed at him personally stems from the fact that he is the first African-American to hold the White House,” the New York Times reports.

Said Obama: “You combine those things, and it means that there is going to be potential anger, frustration, fear — some of it justified, but just misdirected. I think somebody like Mr. Trump is taking advantage of that. That’s what he’s exploiting during the course of his campaign.”

Rendell Says Kasich-Rubio Ticket Would Be Toughest

December 21, 2015 · 6:01 am ET · 20 Comments

Former DNC general chairman Ed Rendell says his party’s scariest opposition in 2016 would be a GOP presidential ticket comprised of Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Sen. Marco Rubio, The Hill reports.

Said Rendell: “In terms of who we fear the most, the Democratic side, just speaking for myself, I would fear John Kasich and Marco Rubio as vice president. That would be the ticket I would fear the most.”

GOP Sets Low Expectations for Congress in 2016

December 21, 2015 · 6:00 am ET · 4 Comments

Wall Street Journal: “After productivity and compromise on some key issues in 2015, Republican leaders in Congress are sending a message about next year: Don’t expect us to replicate it.”

“Lawmakers this year agreed to a $1.15 trillion bill to fund the government through September and reached major, unexpected deals with the White House on education, highways, trade and a bundle of other issues. But they are already setting lower expectations for 2016, laying down markers in areas such as national security where the parties can define themselves against each other in a year that will determine the presidency as well as control of the Senate. The White House, too, has indicated it has a less ambitious legislative agenda for the new year.”

“It’s nonsense.  It’s just another Hillary lie.  She lies like crazy about everything, whether it’s trips where she was being gunned down in a helicopter or an airplane, she’s a liar and everybody knows that.  But she just made this up in thin air.”

Trump Predicts Another Economic Crash

December 20, 2015 · 4:21 pm ET · 52 Comments

Donald Trump “sees economic clouds hovering above the U.S. economy,” Bloomberg reports.

Said Trump: “Remember the word bubble? You heard it here first. I don’t want to sound rude, but I hope if it explodes, it’s going to be now, rather than two months into another administration.”

Martinez Apologizes for Behavior at Hotel

December 20, 2015 · 1:01 pm ET · 32 Comments

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez (R) apologized for the behavior of her staff at a rowdy holiday party and for her testy conversation after police were called, the Santa Fe New Mexican reports.

Said Martinez: “I want to apologize for the conduct of my staff the night of our holiday party. There was apparently a party in a hotel room earlier in the night that was disruptive. Someone was also throwing snowballs from a balcony. None of that should have happened and I was not aware of the extent of the behavior, until recently. And that behavior is not acceptable.”

She added: “I also want to admit that I made a mistake when I went to speak to the receptionist and asked her about the complaint. I should not have gotten involved… I was wrong to speak with them like that, and I apologize.”
