New York Times: “On Friday, the billionaire couple who owns the wine cave — wine is often stored underground because of the cool, stable temperatures — said they were frustrated that their property had set off one of the fiercest back-and-forths of the debate. Watching the contentious moment on television, they grew frustrated as Ms. Warren and other candidates used their winery as a symbol of opulence and the wealthy’s influence on politics.”

Road to Nomination Goes Thru Buttigieg
“Democrats’ latest presidential debate revealed a new reality candidates face just over six weeks before the Iowa caucuses: All roads to the nomination run directly through Pete Buttigieg,” Politico reports.
“For months, conflict within the Democratic primary had lurched forward haphazardly, with hits on Joe Biden falling flat and lines of attack among other candidates seeming to come and go quickly. But in Buttigieg, 2020 finally found its common denominator — and a common target for most everyone else on the debate stage Thursday night.”
Trump Appointee Plagiarized Her Dissertation
“Monica Crowley, the Treasury Department’s assistant secretary for public affairs, committed ‘localized instances of plagiarism’ in her 2000 Ph.D. dissertation, Columbia University found in an investigation that ultimately concluded she did not commit research misconduct,” the New York Times reports.
Trump Makes Up Quotes on Twitter
New York Times: “Mr. Trump has made a habit of injecting his own words into the comments of people he sees on television and then publishing them as direct quotes on Twitter, where he has more than 67 million followers. In some instances, he simply omits a part of the quote he doesn’t like.”
“More often than not, the allies who Mr. Trump misquotes do little to publicly contradict him. Sometimes a lawmaker’s office will simply point reporters to the transcript when asked about the disconnect. They rarely call out Mr. Trump for spreading falsehoods or altering the meaning of their words.”
Space Force Launches
“In signing the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act that includes Space Force, Trump claimed a victory for one of his top national security priorities just two days after being impeached by the House,” the AP reports.
“Space Force has been a reliable applause line at Trump’s political rallies, but for the military it’s seen more soberly as an affirmation of the need to more effectively organize for the defense of U.S. interests in space — especially satellites used for navigation and communication. Space Force is not designed or intended to put combat troops in space.”
McConnell Plots Impeachment Trial Strategy
New York Times: “Shattering convention, he held open a Supreme Court seat for 11 months. He twice changed Senate rules to create a record-setting assembly line of conservative federal judicial confirmations. He has been ruthless in his control of the Senate floor, denying Republicans and Democrats alike much opportunity to debate legislation.”
“Now, as a showdown intensifies over President Trump’s impeachment trial, the test for Mr. McConnell is whether he can again bulldoze over Democrats while keeping his Republican colleagues together, persuading them to share both his low regard for the impeachment charges and his view of the Senate’s role.”
The Impeachment Time Bomb
Carl Bernstein on CNN:
“There are Republicans who have a feeling that this impeachment process thus far… represents a time bomb, that this is not over, None of us knows where this is going. The impact of this continues into the election, into the campaign, and there is a tremendous amount of information out there that journalists are working on, that we do not know about yet.”
“The Ukraine allegations and the clues provided by what occurred are a road map for all kinds of investigators in the coming months. And I believe — and I’ve talked to some people — that there are people in the Senate who understand that this might be a time bomb. That there is time remaining until the election. Obviously, to the trial, too. I’m not saying that necessarily it is going to be a time bomb that explodes, but I think there’s a real possibility of it…”
Trump Adviser Admits Voter Suppression In Wisconsin
“One of President Trump’s top re-election advisers told influential Republicans in swing state Wisconsin that the party has ‘traditionally’ relied on voter suppression to compete in battleground states but will be able to ‘start playing offense’ in 2020 due to relaxed Election Day rules,” according to an audio recording of a private event obtained by the Associated Press.
Said Justin Clark: “Traditionally it’s always been Republicans suppressing votes in places. Let’s start protecting our voters. We know where they are… Let’s start playing offense a little bit. That’s what you’re going to see in 2020. It’s going to be a much bigger program, a much more aggressive program, a much better-funded program.”
Ex-GOP Senators Says Republicans Are On Trial Too
Jeff Flake: “To my former Senate Republican colleagues, I don’t envy you.”
“It might not be fair, but none of the successes, achievements and triumphs you’ve had in public office — whatever bills you’ve passed, hearings you’ve chaired, constituents you have had the privilege of helping — will matter more than your actions in the coming months.”
“President Trump is on trial. But in a very real sense, so are you. And so is the political party to which we belong.”
Secret Stephen Miller Plan Uses Migrant Children Data
“The White House sought this month to embed immigration enforcement agents within the U.S. refugee agency that cares for unaccompanied migrant children, part of a long-standing effort to use information from their parents and relatives to target them for deportation, according to six current and former administration officials,” the Washington Post reports.
“The plan has not been announced publicly. It was developed by Stephen Miller, President Trump’s top immigration adviser, who has long argued that HHS’s Office of Refugee Resettlement is being exploited by parents who hire smugglers to bring their children into the United States illegally. The agency manages shelters that care for underage migrants who cross the border without a parent and tries to identify sponsors — typically family members — eligible to take custody of the minors.”
White House Threatened to Veto Spending Bill
“Senior Trump administration officials in recent days threatened a presidential veto that could have led to a government shutdown if House Democrats refused to drop language requiring prompt release of future military aid for Ukraine,” the Washington Post reports.
“The language was ultimately left out of mammoth year-end spending legislation that passed the House and Senate this week ahead of a Saturday shutdown deadline. The White House said President Trump would sign the $1.4 trillion package before midnight.”
DeNiro Says Trump Needs to Be ‘Humiliated’
Robert De Niro told Michael Moore on his podcast that President Trump needs to be “confronted and humiliated.”
Said DeNiro: “He needs to be confronted and humiliated by whoever his opponent is, his political opponent They have to stand up to him. They don’t have to do it in an obvious physical way, but they have to have the formidability to confront him and to put him in his place, because the people have to see that, to see him be humiliated.”
De Niro added that he wants to “see a bag of shit right in his face.”
Lewandowski Says He’s Likely to Run for Senate
After speaking to President Trump, Corey Lewandowski tells WMUR that he’s likely to run for U.S. Senate from New Hampshire against Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH).
Said Lewandowski: “All of these factors are pointing me in one direction. That direction, if I had to make the decision today, is to run.”
Scientists Warn of Amazon ‘Tipping Point’
“Continued deforestation and other fast-moving changes in the Amazon threaten to turn parts of the rainforest into savanna, devastate wildlife and release billions of tons carbon into the atmosphere,” the Washington Post reports.
“Combined with recent news that the Arctic permafrost may be beginning to fill the atmosphere with greenhouse gases, and that Greenland’s ice sheet is melting at an accelerating pace, it’s the latest hint that important parts of the climate system may be moving toward irreversible changes at a pace that defies earlier predictions.”
Said scientists Thomas Lovejoy and Carlos Nobre: “The precious Amazon is teetering on the edge of functional destruction and, with it, so are we. Today, we stand exactly in a moment of destiny: The tipping point is here, it is now.”
Trump Stewing Over Magazine Editorial
President Trump is still tweeting about the Evangelical magazine calling for his removal from office.
Said Trump: “I guess the magazine, Christianity Today, is looking for Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, or those of the socialist/communist bent, to guard their religion. How about Sleepy Joe? The fact is, no President has ever done what I have done for Evangelicals, or religion itself!”
Trump and His Generals
It started with the generals: James Mattis, John Kelly, H.R. McMaster. Along with Rex Tillerson, they were part of the “Axis of Adults,” the ones who stood between President Trump and chaos – between President Trump and his own, unchecked impulses, particularly in foreign affairs.
As we know now, only Trump is left standing. And he stands impeached, because he couldn’t withstand his unchecked impulses.
Chris Riback talks with Peter Bergen, author of Trump and His Generals, about how we got here.

U.S. Watching for ‘Christmas Surprise’ from North Korea
Associated Press: “A significant launch or test would mean the end of North Korea’s self-imposed moratorium and raise tensions in the region. It would also be a major blow to one of the Trump administration’s major foreign policy initiatives: the drive to get North Korea back to negotiations to eliminate its nuclear weapons and missiles.”
“Earlier this month, the North conducted what U.S. officials say was an engine test. North Korea described it as ‘crucial’ and experts believe that it may have involved an engine for a space launch vehicle or long-range missile. Officials worry that it could be a prelude to the possible launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile in the coming days or weeks.”
