Who’s Behind the Mysterious PAC Backing Susan Collins?

December 19, 2019 · 2:29 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Daily Beast: “One of the most vulnerable Republican 2020 Senate incumbents is getting major air cover from a new super PAC designed to sound like a local group. But all signs point toward the involvement of the country’s biggest business lobby 500 miles away in Washington, D.C.”

“The group, a super PAC called 1820 PAC, has dropped about $700,000 on ads this year pressing for the re-election of Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), who is facing a tough fight in a race sure to be one of the most expensive of the cycle. The name of the PAC is a reference to the year of Maine’s founding, but 1820’s mailing address is in Washington. And a PAY DIRT analysis of public records shows the fingerprints of one of DC’s heaviest political hitters: the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.”

Al Franken Mocks Mitch McConnell

December 19, 2019 · 1:48 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Former Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) mocked Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) speech criticizing Democrats over President Trump’s impeachment to taking advice from serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

Said Franken: “Listening to Mitch McConnell talk about the decline of bipartisanship is like listening to Jeffrey Dahmer complain about the decline of dinner party etiquette.”

December 19, 2019 · 1:13 pm ET · Leave a Comment

House Budget Committee Chairman John Yarmuth (D-KY) blasted President Trump for his comments at a campaign rally suggesting the late Rep. John Dingell (D-MI) was “looking up” instead of down from heaven.

Said Yarmuth: “It’s moments like these that we are reminded that the president is not only a criminal, he is impulsively cruel and truly rotten to the core. Hell will be too good for him.”

Van Drew Says He’s ‘Technically Still a Democrat’

December 19, 2019 · 12:56 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Despite voting with Republicans against impeachment and giving standing ovations to President Trump during the impeachment debate, Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D-NJ) is not ready to say he’s a Republican, telling National Journal that he is “technically still a Democrat” and expects to announce a decision within “the next few days.”

However, Bloomberg reports Van Drew is expected to meet Trump at the White House later today.

Bloomberg Would Work ‘In the Open’ As President

December 19, 2019 · 12:35 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Michael Bloomberg writes on LinkedIn that he will work “in the open” with his staff if he becomes president.

Said Bloomberg: “If I’m elected president, I’ll run the White House the way I’ve always run things. I’ll use the Oval Office for some official functions, but the rest of the time I’ll sit in the open with everyone else.”

He added: “If you’re in charge, why would you want to wall yourself off from your team? It makes no sense, but it’s tradition – and an ego trip – so executives think they’re entitled to it.”

Why It’s Nearly Impossible to Remove a President

December 19, 2019 · 12:30 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Philip Bump: “Consider, for example, that it requires 67 votes in the Senate to oust Trump from office. That means that only 34 votes are needed to preserve his position. Even if he were deeply unpopular, if Trump maintained support from senators in 17 states, he could keep his job. Meaning, in the most extreme scenario, that he could be impeached but not removed from office if senators from the 17 least-populous states — representing only about 7 percent of the population — decided to stand by him.”

December 19, 2019 · 11:08 am ET · Leave a Comment

Presidential Race Remains a Toss Up

December 19, 2019 · 11:03 am ET · Leave a Comment

Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball: “Our initial ratings had 248 electoral votes at least leaning to the Republican nominee (Trump, almost certainly), 244 electoral votes at least leaning to the Democratic nominee, and 46 Toss-ups. Since then, we’ve made only one significant change, pushing Hillary Clinton’s most narrow 2016 victory, New Hampshire, from Toss-up to Leans Democratic, leaving a 248-248 split with just 42 electoral votes’ worth of Toss Ups (Arizona, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Nebraska’s Second Congressional District).”

“The 2020 race still looks like a 50-50 proposition to us.”

The consensus Electoral Vote Map is a bit more fluid with Democrats at 238 electoral votes, Republicans at 198 and Toss Ups at 108.

Fixing the DNC’s Preposterous Debate Rules

December 19, 2019 · 10:49 am ET · Leave a Comment

Walter Shapiro: “It is fashionable to argue that only losers fail to mobilize a national following seven weeks before the Iowa caucuses. But since the days when Eugene McCarthy stunned Lyndon Johnson amid the snows of New Hampshire in 1968 and a little-known governor named Jimmy Carter swept the opening contests in 1976, Democratic voters have reveled in surprising the handicappers.”

“One simple rule change would solve the majority of the problems surrounding the debates: Give an automatic seat on the stage to any Democrat who has won a statewide election or served in the Cabinet in the last 10 years. Only true outsiders like Yang and Steyer would have to prove that they have enough of a following to qualify for the debate stage.”
