November Surprises
Ridge Says Trump Abused His Power
Former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge (R) told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that there’s little doubt President Trump abused his power when he asked Ukraine to investigate his rivals, including Joe Biden.
Said Ridge: “I am disappointed and troubled by the very fact that my president – and he is my president – would ask a foreign leader of a troubled country who’s been besieged by an enemy of the United States, to do him a political favor. As far as I’m concerned, it is abuse of power.”
How Amy Klobuchar Could Win
Walter Shapiro sees a path to the Democratic presidential nomination for Sen. Amy Klobuchar.
“As a political reporter, there is always a danger in straying too far from the herd. Even eight decades later, I feel for those reporters who, in 1936, seriously believed that Alf Landon had a chance against Franklin Roosevelt right up until the moment when he won just eight electoral votes. So I don’t want to go too far in hyping Klobuchar’s odds of ending up close to the top in Iowa. But with breaks, momentum, and continued strong debate performances, she could finish ahead of Biden in the caucuses.”
Democrats Reclaim the Constitution
Alexander Heffner: “The Trump impeachment is spotlighting the Founders’ fears of foreign influence on US security and leaders, and turning liberals into originalists.”
Sanders Asks Young Backers to Convince Parents
“Bernie Sanders is struggling to gain traction with Democratic voters over age 50, so his campaign is coaching thousands of young supporters on how to talk to their parents and grandparents during the holidays,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
Ivanka Trump Took Questions from Her Own Aide
BuzzFeed News: “The announcement that Ivanka Trump would speak at the Doha Forum in Qatar prompted a wave of speculation from the foreign policy community about what the US President’s daughter might be doing in the Gulf state… But while her mere presence sent a political signal, what actually happened was far stranger.”
“In a room packed with high level officials from around the world, Trump answered admiring questions about her pet project advocating for women’s economic development from a spokesperson for her own government, who is also working on the project.”
Trump Matches His Best Approval Ever
A new Quinnipiac poll finds President Trump matching his best job approval rating ever, as 43% of registered voters say they approve of the job he is doing, while 52% disapprove.
Said pollster Mary Snow: “A 50-year low unemployment rate coupled with stocks hitting record highs are adding up to a rosy view of the economy and voters feeling optimistic about their own personal finances. That view of a strong economy seems to be helping President Trump match his highest job approval rating since being elected, despite facing becoming the third president in U.S. history to be impeached this week.”
Biden Leads In the Super Tuesday States
A CBS News poll of Super Tuesday states finds Joe Biden leading Democratic presidential candidates with 28%, followed by Elizabeth Warren at 25%, Bernie Sanders at 20%, Pete Buttigieg at 9% and Michael Bloomberg at 4%.
Giuliani Says He Needed Yovanovitch ‘Out of the Way’
Rudy Giuliani told the New Yorker that he needed former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch “out of the way” because she was going to make the investigations of Joe and Hunter Biden “difficult for everybody.”
Flynn to Be Sentenced Next Month
“A federal judge on Monday rejected Michael Flynn’s attacks against the FBI and the Justice Department, setting a long-delayed sentencing for President Trump’s former national security adviser for Jan. 28,” the Washington Post reports.
Joe Cunningham Will Vote to Impeach Trump
Rep. Joe Cunningham (D-SC) told the Charleston Post & Courier that he plans to vote in favor of both articles of impeachment against President Trump, concluding after weeks of deliberation that Trump’s conduct was “unacceptable.”
Van Drew’s Seat No Longer a Toss Up
The Cook Political Report moves Rep. Jeff Van Drew’s seat from Toss Up to the Lean Republican column in the wake of his party switch, “and that might even be generous to Democrats.”
“In Democrats’ favor, it shouldn’t be hard for their nominee to raise national money against Van Drew, considering the outrage at his desertion. But fundamentally, this is a classic blue-collar, Obama-Trump district that the deeply-rooted Van Drew only won by single digits against an atrocious GOP nominee in a great Democratic year. Van Drew would begin as the favorite if he were to win the GOP nomination.”
Collin Peterson Won’t Switch Parties
Rep. Collin Peterson (D-MN) told KFGO that he’s leaning against voting to impeach President Trump, but won’t switch parties.
Said Peterson: “I’m staying in the party, in spite of some of the stuff that’s going on that I don’t agree with, I am not going switch parties at this stage of my career. There have been overtures by the highest levels of the Republican party in the last couple weeks to ask if I would consider it and I told them no.”
Corporations Paid 11.3% Tax Rate Last Year
Washington Post: “The 2017 tax law lowered the U.S. corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%, but in practice large companies often pay far less than that due to deductions, tax breaks and other loopholes.”
“In the first year of the law, the actual amount corporations paid in federal taxes on their incomes — their so-called ‘effective rate’ — was 11.3% on average, possibly its lowest level in more than three decades… The report also found that 91 corporations in the Fortune 500, many worth billions of dollars, paid no federal taxes last year.”
New Twitter Account Fuels Speculation About Pompeo
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is further fueling speculation about whether he will run for Senate in Kansas by using a new personal Twitter account.
So far, he’s tweeted mostly about sports.
Fears of Recession Fade
Washington Post: “The U.S. economy is heading into 2020 at a pace of steady, sustained growth after a series of interest rate cuts and the apparent resolution of two trade-related threats mostly eliminated the risk of a recession. This marks a dramatic turnaround in momentum since August, when some forecasters predicted a 50 percent chance of a downturn starting by the end of next year.”
Key takeaway: “The trade deals, while not nearly as ambitious as Trump promised, have lessened one of the biggest drags on the U.S. economy: uncertainty.”
Giuliani Associate Says $1 Million from Russia Was a Loan
“Lev Parnas, an associate of Rudy Giuliani indicted on U.S. campaign finance charges, said a $1 million transfer into his wife’s bank account from Russia was the proceeds of a loan — and not an attempt to conceal his assets,” Bloomberg reports.
“Federal prosecutors raised the transfer in a filing last week asking the judge to revoke Parnas’s bail because he misrepresented his financial resources when he was arrested. They said Parnas’ wife, Svetlana, received $1 million from a bank account in Russia in September, the month before Parnas and business partner Igor Fruman were arrested as they sought to leave the country.”
Half of Americans Want Trump Impeached and Removed
A Fox News poll found that 50% of Americans want President Trump impeached and removed from office, while 41% believe he shouldn’t be impeached.
Key finding: While 85% of Democrats favor impeachment and removal and 84% of Republicans don’t, there’s a new high in support for impeachment among independents – 45% now favor it, compared to 38% in October.
Vox: “Trump boasted that his polls are ‘through the roof.’ Fox News quickly proved him wrong.”
